Is NASCAR A Sport?

Artificial Cautions To Ensure A Close Race Make NASCAR Look Like Pro Wrestling

By Steve McCormick, About.com

I agree that exciting races are fun to watch. The side-by-side finishes like we saw recently in Daytona, Bristol and Martinsville were thrilling to witness. However, is NASCAR giving up its integrity and credibility as a legitimate sport in the name of entertainment?

Sport Versus Entertainment

By throwing cautions to close up the competition NASCAR is declaring itself to be entertainment instead of sport. Entertainment, like the WWE, is determined only partly be the participants and the rest is up to the script. Sport is determined solely by the competitors.

True sports have an ebb and flow to them that fans accept when they buy the ticket. Fans pay $500 for a Super Bowl ticket knowing full well that the game may be a blowout. Sometimes people that hold tickets for games 5, 6 or 7 of the World Series don't even get to go to the game.

NASCAR Needs To Let The Race Run Its Natural Course

Sports are determined by the competitors and no sanctioning body should artificially influence the outcome.

NASCAR needs to choose one or the other before its credibility is damaged beyond repair. NASCAR used to be a great sport. Lately I am not always so sure.
