How is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Season Structured?

The First Half of the Season Is When Teams See What They Have

By , About.com Guide

The NASCAR Sprint Cup season has a natural flow to it. While each race is worth the same number of points not all races are truly equal. The season has distinct segments, each with a unique personality and a different focus. What are these segments and how do they affect the overall Chase for the Sprint Cup?

Part I: Setting The Stage

The first segment consists of the entire first half of the season. From Daytona in February up to Daytona in July this part of the schedule sets the stage for the entire season.

There isn't a lot of media focus on the points at this point in the season. The lead might change hands every week early in the season as the top drivers swap the top spot. Being the point leader is virtually meaningless this early in the season.

Silly Season normally has not started yet. Drivers and teams are not likely to announce their plans for next season until they get a feel for how this season is going first.

The big stories from this part of the season are usually which teams are off to a great start and which teams are unexpectedly struggling.

Key races:

  • Daytona 500
  • Spring Talladega race
  • All-Star Race at Lowes Motor Speedway
  • Coca-Cola 600 at Lowes Motor Speedway
