Does NASCAR's Chase Bonus Program Work?

How Did the 2010 Chase for the Cup Contenders Fare In 2010 Race Wins?

NASCAR's updated Chase format which provides ten Chase bonus points for each regular season win was to encourage drivers to race for wins instead of just playing it safe. While this is a nice idea how well did it play out during the 2010 regular season?

Did Chasers Win Races?

On the positive side 21 of the 26 points races in 2010 were won by drivers in the Chase. The other five were won by Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray, Juan Montoya and David Reutimann who each won races in 2010 but failed to make the Chase.

Jamie McMurray's 2010 resume looks pretty good since he is tied for fourth in 2010 race wins with two. McMurray's two wins include the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400. Because of those big wins McMurray is also the series' money leader at this point in the season. However he wasn't consistent enough to make the top twelve.

Consistency Is Still More Important

On the opposite side of this coin there are five drivers in the 2010 Chase who haven't won a single race. Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth and Clint Bowyer all qualified for the Chase with consistent top ten finishes and just six DNFs between them.

Questions For You:

  • Does the ten point Chase bonus really matter to drivers?
  • Should Jamie McMurray be in the Chase?
  • Should a driver be required to win a race in order to win the Championship?
