2009 O'Reilly Checker Auto Parts 500:

Only two races remain in the 2009 Chase for the Cup and the Championship battle is heating up. Jimmie Johnson stumbled in Texas allowing Mark Martin cut over 100 points off of the lead. Mark Martin is now just 73 points as the series returns to Phoenix where Mark won in the spring. The 2009 Championship battle still has some life left in it as the 2009 O'Reilly Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway rolls off this Sunday.

The Track:

Turn one is sharp with just 11 degrees of banking while turns 3 and 4 are long and sweeping with just 9 degrees of banking. Phoenix also features a unique "kink" in the backstretch that serves to tighten up the backstretch and limit passing.

These challenging specs means that your car has to handle well in order to survive a long 500 kilometer race there. It is possible to pass if you are faster, but there is no outside groove for side-by-side racing.

Race Distance:

312 Laps = 312 Miles = 500 Kilometers

The Big Picture:

Jimmie Johnson came into Texas last week with a 184 point lead. When the dust had settled in Texas his point lead was slashed to just 73 points over Mark Martin. The 2009 Chase had looked like it was over but now Mark Martin has new life with two races remaining.

The top twelve:

  1. Jimmie Johnson
  2. Mark Martin -73
  3. Jeff Gordon -112
  4. Kurt Busch -171
  5. Tony Stewart -178
  6. Juan Montoya -236
  7. Greg Biffle -247
  8. Denny Hamlin -322
  9. Ryan Newman -324
  10. Kasey Kahne -399
  11. Carl Edwards -440
  12. Brian Vickers -520

Storylines:

This weekend the top story has to be Mark Martin. A week ago NASCAR's sentimental favorite an "the best driver to never win the Championship" looked like a bridesmaid once again. However Jimmie Johnson's Texas troubles have launched Mark back into the spotlight.

Mark Martin is bringing the same car back to a race track that he dominated in the spring and picked up his first win of 2009. Another performance like that and he would cut further into Jimmie Johnson's Championship lead.

Can Mark complete the Phoenix sweep and put the pressure on Johnson to perform in Homestead?

Media Coverage:

TV: ABC Sunday, November 15th, 2:30PM Eastern.

Radio: MRN and SIRIUS Satellite

Actual Race: 3:15 p.m. Eastern

Recent Events:

2008 Winner: Jimmie Johnson

2008 Polesitter: Jimmie Johnson

Last Year:

The 2008 Checker Auto Parts 500 was Jimmie Johnson's Victory Lap. Johnson qualified on the pole and dominated much of the race. Jimmie didn't officially clinch the Championship in Phoenix but extended his lead over Carl Edwards in the points so that Jimmie only needed to finish 36th or better in Homestead to clinch.

The race itself was marked by two red flags. One for weather and another for a late race crash that saw two cars on top of each other. As a result ABC dumped the race in the middle and sent race fans scurrying to ESPN2 in order to catch the finish.

Predictions:

This Sunday the top of the leaderboard is likely going to look a lot like the top of the point standings. Hendrick teammates have dominated Phoenix in recent years and will likely continue that trend this weekend.

Jimmie Johnson has won three of the last four phoenix races and finished fourth in the remaining event. Johnson is coming off a miserable finish in Texas and will hit Phoenix with guns blazing to regain momentum in the Chase. Jimmie Johnson is definitely getting the start on my fantasy team this weekend.

The one race of the last four that Jimmie didn't win went to his teammate and chief Chase competitor. Mark Martin lead over half of the laps when the Sprint Cup series visited Phoenix in April and picked up the win. If Jimmie doesn't extend his point lead with the Phoenix win then Mark Martin will certainly cut into that lead with a win of his own.
