2008 O'Reilly Checker Auto Parts 500:

The 2008 Chase For The Cup is on the home stretch. Only two races remain in the 2008 season and the Championship battle is heating up.

Carl Edwards has won the last two races and cut Jimmie Johnson's lead dramatically. This weekend's Sprint Cup race in Phoenix will set the stage for the final showdown in Homestead next Sunday.

The Track:

Turn one is sharp with just 11 degrees of banking while turns 3 and 4 are long and sweeping with just 9 degrees of banking. Phoenix also features a unique "kink" in the backstretch that serves to tighten up the backstretch and limit passing.

These challenging specs means that your car has to handle well in order to survive a long 500 kilometer race there. It is possible to pass if you are faster, but there is no outside groove for side-by-side racing.

Race Distance:

312 Laps = 312 Miles = 500 Kilometers

The Big Picture:

Carl Edwards' second win in a row chopped a bunch of points off of Jimmie Johnson's point lead. Edwards is now 106 points behind Johnson with just two races to go in the 2008 Chase.

If Johnson has two more races like his Texas performance then his third consecutive championship may be in danger.

  1. Jimmie Johnson
  2. Carl Edwards -106
  3. Greg Biffle -143
  4. Jeff Burton -212
  5. Jeff Gordon -255
  6. Clint Bowyer -267
  7. Kevin Harvick -279
  8. Matt Kenseth -393
  9. Tony Stewart --404
  10. Kyle Busch -428
  11. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -429
  12. Denny Hamlin -431

Storylines:

Carl Edwards is on a roll. He won the last two races and has shaved almost 100 points off of Johnson's lead.

Phoenix is a tough place to gain ground on Johnson. Jimmie Johnson has won the last two races at Phoenix and has finished outside the top 10 only twice in 10 career Phoenix races.

Everyone wants to know if Carl Edwards can catch Johnson for the Cup? No, I don't believe he can.

Media Coverage:

Recent Events:

2007 Winner: Jimmie Johnson

2007 Polesitter: Carl Edwards

Last Year:

The 2007 Checker Auto Parts 500 was all about the points duel bewteen Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Unfortunately there wasn't much to talk about. Jeff Gordon never got the handle on his car all day long while Jimmie Johnson was hooked up and untouchable at the end.

After struggling all day Jeff Gordon ended up tenth. During his post-race interview Jeff Gordon said of his chances to win the 2007 Championship "It's over."

Predictions:

This Sunday there is one obvious pick that has to be on everyone's Fantasy team. Jimmie Johnson has won the last two Phoenix races and is sure to bounce back from his disappointing Texas run with a strong Phoenix finish. Jimmie makes a great fantasy pick this weekend if you haven't used him up yet in 2008.

For my backup I'm going with Clint Bowyer. Bowyer finished second here in the spring and has been solid for much of 2008. Currently sixth in the Chase Standings Bowyer has room to move up with another strong Phoenix finish.
