2008 Sylvania 300 Preview:

The 2008 Sylvania 300 in New Hampshire is the first race of the 2008 Chase For The Cup. Kyle Busch's big point lead has been erased. Only 80 points separate first from twelfth with just ten races remaining in the 2008 Sprint Cup season.

NASCAR's playoffs begin this Sunday in New Hampshire with the 2008 Sylvania 300. Which of the twelve Chasers will make the biggest statement to kick off their Championship chase?

The Track:

The 1.058 mile perfect oval that is New Hampshire Motor Speedway has only 12 degrees of banking in the corners. The straightaways measure 1,500 feet each to make this a true symmetrical oval. The flat corners can make passing difficult as there is usually only one groove.

Race Distance:

300 laps = 317.4 miles

The Big Picture:

Each driver in the Chase now has 5,000 points plus ten points for each win so far this season. Kyle Busch's 8 eight regular season wins keeps him in the lead over Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson.

The top twelve are now:

  1. Kyle Busch
  2. Carl Edwards -30
  3. Jimmie Johnson -40
  4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -70
  5. Clint Bowyer -70
  6. Denny Hamlin -70
  7. Jeff Burton -70
  8. Tony Stewart -80
  9. Greg Biffle -80
  10. Jeff Gordon -80
  11. Kevin Harvick -80
  12. Matt Kenseth -80

Storylines:

The 2008 Chase for the Cup is the biggest story of the week. Twelve drivers are now within 80 points of leader Kyle Busch.

In 2007 Jimmie Johnson came into the Chase as the defending series Champion and having won the two previous races back-to-back. This season Johnson finds himself in a very similar position.

Is this Johnson's Championship to lose even though he isn't leading?

Media Coverage:

Radio: MRN and SIRIUS Satellite

Actual Race: 2:10PM Eastern

Recent Events:

2007 Winner: Clint Bowyer

2007 Polesitter: Clint Bowyer

Last Year:

Clint Bowyer came into the 2007 Chase for the Cup as the only one of the twelve Chase drivers without a 2007 victory. In fact, Bowyer had never won a Sprint Cup race in his career.

Clint Bowyer fixed that problem one year ago. Bowyer dominated the 2007 Sylvania 300. He lead 222 of the 300 laps and rolled home for the easy win.

Predictions:

Kevin Harvick won this race in 2006. He had a strong car here in June before mother nature turned this into a pit strategy battle.

Last year Clint Bowyer claimed his first win of the year in this first race of the Chase. I think Kevin Harvick will duplicate that feat this weekend in New Hampshire.

For my backup pick this week I am going with a "safety pick." Jimmie Johnson swept both events here in 2003 and comes off back-to-back wins in California and Richmond.

The two-time defending series Champion is on a roll and will quickly make up the 40 points that he currently trails Kyle Busch in the standings. You can't go wrong with Johnson this week at NHMS.
