Lowes Motor Speedway hosted the fifth race of the 2008 Chase for the Cup. The Chase is now half over and more than half of the original twelve contenders have been effectively eliminated from contention. Jeff Burton's big win put him squarely in the hunt while Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle both remained solid.

Qualifying

Rain overruled qualifying so the starting lineup was set by 2008 car owner points. This put the Chasers in order at the front of the pack.

Storylines

The Chase for the Cup was once again the center of attention this week. Carl Edwards continued his run of bad luck on Saturday night. Last week Carl Edwards made headlines with a mistake at Talladega which took out a number of Chasers and cost him some points.

Moving ahead to this week, Thursday he got into a scuffle with Kevin Harvick in the garage area. Then, hoping his luck was going to change he strapped into his race car on Saturday ready for the race. Unfortunately his bad luck was not over as he had a mysterious engine problem and lost a number of laps in the pits.

Edwards finished 33rd and fell from second to fourth in the points. He is now a distant 168 points behind Johnson.

Chasing The Checkers

This race came down to pit strategy. All night long we saw the driver that was out front pull away from the pack. Clean air was a huge advantage and it was Jeff Burton's crew that took advantage of that the best.

Jeff Burton raced his way into the lead passing Greg Biffle with 57 laps to go. Twenty laps later he dove onto pit road for his final pit stop. He got fuel only and returned to the track as the leader. He used that clean air to maximum advantage and held on for the win.
