The Daytona 500 has a unique qualifying format that only locks in the top two drivers in time trials. The rest of the 61 drivers vying for 43 starting spots will be determined on Thursday but Robert Yates Racing teammates David Gilliland and Ricky Rudd have their front row spots locked in for Sunday's 2007 Daytona 500.

Ford fans have a lot to cheer about as the Blue Oval Brigade posted four of the top six fastest times.

  1. David Gilliland - Robert Yates Racing Ford
  2. Ricky Rudd - Robert Yates Racing Ford
  3. David Stremme - Ganassi Racing Dodge
  4. Juan Pablo Montoya - Ganassi Racing Dodge
  5. David Ragan - Roush Racing Ford
  6. Boris Said - No Fear Racing Ford

Only Gilliland and Rudd know where they will start on Sunday. The rest of the starting lineup will be determined on Thursday by the Gatorade Duels At Daytona.

Toyota Drivers Middle Of The Pack

Toyota's first official laps in NASCAR were solid, but not spectacular. The top Toyota driver was rookie David Reutimann who qualified 14th. Right behind him was fellow Toyota driver Jeremy Mayfield who qualified 15th.

Three Teams In Trouble With NASCAR

Both Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne had their qualifying times disallowed after qualifying today. NASCAR found some "unapproved aerodynamic enhancements" on both cars.

NASCAR said that these infractions are just as serious as the violations that got #48 crew chief Chad Knauss suspended last year. No penalties or fines have yet been announced. Both drivers will start in the back of the second 150-mile qualifying race.

Michael Waltrip may have to start the Daytona 500 on foot. NASCAR has confiscated his entire car so that inspectors can "go over it with a fine-tooth comb." Apparently inspectors have seen something that they didn't like, but have not been able to pinpoint an actual rule violation.

We can expect to hear more from all three of these stories in the next couple of days.

What's Next In Daytona?

The track will remain quiet now until Wednesday when NEXTEL Cup teams will get some practice time before Thursday's Gatorade Duel at Daytona twin 150-mile qualifying races.

The Busch and Craftsman Truck Series drivers will get their first track time of the 2007 Speedweeks on Wednesday. Both series will practice on Wednesday. The trucks will qualify on Thursday and the Busch Series will qualify on Friday.
