Sample Letters

On February 18, 2001. the NASCAR Winston Cup Series lost its most influential and talented competitor, Dale Earnhardt. To this date, nothing has been done by NASCAR or the sponsors of the Winston Cup to commemorate the contributions made by Dale Earnhardt to the sport. It is for this reason that I support the following proposal.

I request that NASCAR and the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company officially recognize the contributions of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., to the Winston Cup Series as well as motorsports in general by renaming the series "All Star" Event, The Winston, in honor of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. I feel this is appropriate for the following reasons.

1. This event is not a points race for the Winston Cup. This action would take nothing away from any current or future race sponsor and would not affect the season's point standings.
2. Winston is advertised in every Winston Cup event by virtue of its name. As a result the need to receive the publicity for their product is negligible.
3. Dale Earnhardt, Sr. is generally recognized as the greatest star in NASCAR's modern era, and as such deserves to have continued recognition as a true "All Star".
4. Dale Earnhardt, Sr., competed in The Winston every year and is the race's winningest driver. His long tradition with The Winston makes this action appropriate.
5. The racing public is awaiting some type of action honoring Dale Earnhardt, Sr. This simple change of name could do a lot to help fans, teams, drivers, etc. achieve closure on this unfortunate death.

Therefore I request that you consider changing the name of The Winston to The Dale Earnhardt Memorial All-Star Race, or some other name which honors Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
