by Duane Falk
Running 160 pages, including the topical index and complete Daytona 500 stats, this book is jammed with 175 beautiful photos. From the early days on the beach course and the original formation of NASCAR right up through the 2001 race this book covers the complete history of the Daytona 500 and the great moments that make this race so special.
Mr. Falk covers all of the legendary moments from Daytona including the classic Petty-Pearson battle in 1976 and the infamous Allison-Yarborough-Allison fight in 1979. As you turn each page it is the pictures that grab your attention first, but they only tell part of the story. Duane then fills in the gaps and makes the pictures come alive.
The final chapter is all about Dale Earnhardt at Daytona. Again highlighted with excellent full-color photos, Duane digs into Dale's record setting success and his bad luck and frustration over his 23 years at Daytona. Although there are no earth-shattering revelations in this section, the photos and Duane's clear descriptions of Dale's near-wins, wins and, finally, his death make this section especially well done.
Finally, the appendix lists all of the track records, the top-ten from every Daytona 500 and other useful statistics.
Overall, while this book is certainly worthwhile for any fan of "The Great American Race," the many, many wonderful photos and the excellent Dale Earnhardt section make this book a good choice for any NASCAR fan. If you already know it all, you'll enjoy the photos. If you're new to the sport this book will bring you up to date on the great history of the Daytona 500.
