Top Row Seat - Rockingham
Dateline: 10/28/97This week the boys went back to North Carolina Motor Speedway, better known as "The Rock", and came out one step closer to the Championship. All three of the drivers who still have a mathematical shot at the title finished in the top six. This proves to be a win for Jeff Gordon who at this point can only lose the Championship.
Zero Wins In 494 Starts
One of the highlights of the day for me (other than seeing Richard Petty's boots) was watching Dick Trickle and Rick Mast run a strong second and third respectively. Between the two of them they have no NASCAR Winston Cup wins in 494 starts (Mast 0-243, Trickle 0-251). Now who wouldn't just love to see a guy like that win one?
Unfortunately, Rick Mast had mechanical trouble and fell out of the race. Dick Trickle held on to finish fifth after having a great battle with Mark Martin for the spot.
Strange Quote Of The Week
While recognizing Dick Trickle's great run Buddy Baker said of Dick's age "If Trickle was a rooster you wouldn't want him. He'd be a little too tough."
Umm, thanks Buddy.. I think..
Next Week
This week the crews have to make a long drive west to Phoenix, AZ to face the tricky triangular oval in the desert. The focus will again be on the championship as all eyes will be on Jeff Gordon as he needs to just keep it between the fences in order to hold onto his commanding lead.
New Feature
I just wanted to take a second and point out to you all that chat is now available right here at The Mining Company's NASCAR site. From the top bar you can choose "chat/bbs" or you can choose the "Chat" link from the right side of the homepage. I'll be stopping by regularly during the day and evening as I am online and on Wednesday nights at 8pm I'll be there to answer questions and chat about the week in NASCAR.
Hope to see you there!
