Top Row Seat - Dover Downs

Dateline: 09/22/98

Quietly Making Noise

It's a shame that the #94 car had a paint job that was virtually impossible to pick out of the pack on Sunday, because as Mark Martin ran away from the field and hid it was the driver of the McDonalds car that was quietly giving us all a glimpse of the future of NASCAR.

Matt Kenseth is going to be a Winston Cup star.

I first noticed him in his second Busch Grand National race ever at Talladega in 1997 Matt took the underachieving Robbie Reiser #17 car that had been vacated by the injured Tim Bender and finished an impressive 7th. He was immediately signed to finish out the season.

Those of you fortunate enough to have been in Dover this week will be able to tell all your friends that you were there when Matt Kenseth made his Winston Cup debut. This was an historic occasion.

Quote Of The Week

My favorite scanner bite from the weekend happened shortly after a mid-race restart. Mark Martin had pulled out to his usual 15 car length lead as Matt Kenseth dove low into turn three to take second place. You could easily hear Mark grinning as he came off turn 4 and exclaimed into his radio "Look at Matt!"

Your Turn

Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced his plans for 1999 and beyond this week. And Matt Kenseth made his impressive Winston Cup debut. Both of these future stars appear to be headed on a crash course for the Rookie Of The Year title in 2000.

Who do you think is going to have the better Winston Cup career? Stop by the chatroom this Wednesday at 8pm EST and let me know who you think has the brighter future.

Or, join in the debate on the bulletin boards and share with the world your thoughts on these two current and future competitors.
