Top Row Seat - Pocono
Dateline: 07/26/99Pocono Raceway has historically been utterly forgettable in terms of the Winston Cup Championship. This weekend's race was anything but forgettable as two-time defending champion Jeff Gordon was effectively eliminated from the 1999 Winston Cup chase.

Gordon Hopes - Hopeless
|
Jeff Gordon and the Rainbow Warriors are never easy to count out of the Winston Cup chase because there are no weaknesses in the team. Since conquering the road courses (to the tune of four consecutive road course wins) Jeff is a legitimate favorite at every race track on the circuit.
However, this weekend in Pocono Jeff had tire troubles... again. Texas and Richmond both spelled tire troubles for Gordon and cost him dearly in the points. This weekend's blown tire while leading lead to a thirty-second place finish and will likely prove to be too much to overcome as Jeff has slipped back to sixth place in the points 492 behind leader Dale Jarrett.
This is too much for anyone to overcome. The Winston Cup points race for 1999 is now down to four: Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton.
Think I'm premature in declaring Gordon out? Think fifth place rookie Tony Stewart has a legitimate shot? Let the world know what you think on the bulletin board. Or you can talk about all things NASCAR in the chat room Wednesday night from 8-9pm EST.
