A Possible Solution

While I agree that consistency is an important part of what defines a champion I also believe that winning should be the goal of all NASCAR competitors. A driver who takes a chance occasionally to win a race instead of taking his "safe" sixth place finish needs to be rewarded for helping to put on a better show for the fans.

I'd like to suggest that NASCAR update the points system. The current points scale is like this:

I believe that NASCAR should change the balance of points in the top five to make the top spots worth more and reward teams more for a victory. I would propose a points system more like this:

1st200
2nd185
3rd170
4th160
5th155

Then maintain the current points distribution for the remaining positions on back through the rest of the finishing order. This minor points adjustment makes winning the race more important than it is today while still rewarding consistent finishes. Whereas today the difference between first and fifth is only twenty points, in my new system the difference is nearly double that.

I believe that this small change would improve the quality of NASCAR's product as the top teams would be forced to puch harder in order to gain the maximum amount of points each week. This would force teams to make hard decisions in the heat of the battle and not always take the safe way out.
