Tragedy In New Hampshire

Dateline: 07/07/2000

NASCAR Winston Cup driver Kenny Irwin died this morning after a practice crash at New Hampshire International Speedway. Kenny was practicing his BellSouth Mobility car #42 in preparation for Sunday's race.

The racing world is still recovering from the most recent tragedy in the sport. Just last May Adam Petty, grandson of NASCAR legend Richard Petty, was killed at the same race track while he was practicing for the Busch Grand National series race.

Information is still coming in. Check back soon for more as the NASCAR community again mourns the loss of one of it's own.

Update #1

Witnesses of the incident are speculating that Kenny's third turn incident was caused by a stuck throttle. If this is true then this would be the same cause and the same location as Adam Petty's crash in May.

Update #2

New Hampshire International Speedway has released a press release containing official statements from: Concord Hospital, NASCAR President Bill France, NHIS Owners Bob & Gary Bahre, the Petty family, Team Sabco and BellSouth.

You can read the press release in it's entirety here.
