Top Row Seat - Pocono

Dateline: 06/22/99

Too many cars found their way out to the concrete retaining wall this week including Rusty Wallace, Michael Waltrip, Darrell Waltrip, John Andretti, Jimmy Spencer and a host of others as Pocono Raceway balanced out last week's caution free event with 11 cautions of it's own.

Jeff Burton lead off the demolition derby on lap two when he got into the back of Wally Dallenbach and spun them both up into the wall. Jeff deserves a lot of credit for standing up and accepting the blame in an era where drivers rarely take responsibility for a wreck. When asked about the incident Jeff said "When the guy in the back hits the guy in the front, it's the guy in the back's fault."

Brutal, Simply Brutal

There is no other way to describe the horrifying wreck involving Dave Marcis. As Dave raced off through the tunnel turn he made slight contact with Brett Bodine and was launched violently into the outside retaining wall. This was the scariest incident in Winston Cup since Steve Grissom backed it into the wall in Atlanta in the spring of 1997.

Fortunately Dave walked away from the incident and was later treated and released from a local hospital. This is a testament to the high safety standards in NASCAR and the exceptional engineers who design and build these cars with driver safety at the fore front.
