| Should the racing go on while our nation is at war? | |||||||
Recently there has been some discussion as to whether or not NASCAR should
continue while our nation is at war. With young Americans risking their
lives fighting for freedom halfway across the world is it appropriate for
NASCAR to to continue "business as usual" here at home?
The Argument Against
Now is a time for concern, respect and responsibility. Through our elected
officials we have chosen to put nearly 300,000 Americans directly
in harms way. We can not now turn our backs on them, even if only for a
few hours, to enjoy a race while they risk their lives.
Also, with the increased risk of terrorism it is irresponsible for NASCAR
to sanction such a large gathering of people in one place. The security
and safety of NASCAR fans should outweigh NASCAR's need to keep the money
rolling in. Attracting hundreds of thousands of race fans to one location
is simply a bad idea at this time.
The Argument To Continue
NASCAR fans are a patriotic group, many of them veterans themselves who do
understand what our collective sons and daughters are going through in Iraq.
It is our duty here at home to remember them, pray for them and appreciate
their sacrifices which allow us to enjoy the freedom to watch NASCAR.
What better way to honor their commitment and sacrifice than by making
full use of the freedoms that they allow us? Pre-race ceremonies always include
a prayer, the National Anthem and a military flyover. These displays will
take on extra significance this weekend and every weekend until we bring
our troops back home safely.
As for the safety issue, we can not live our lives in fear. NASCAR takes every
possible precaution to ensure the race fans safety. All bags and coolers are
inspected, overflights are limited, and NASCAR has been in contact with all of
the "relevant authorities" to assure race fan safety.
Summary
God Bless America, may we get this task over with soon and bring all of the
troops home safely.
