Burton Reigns In The Rain

Dateline: 03/06/2000

Here is a new formula for NASCAR. Winston NoBull 5 event? Check. Raining? Check. Then the winner of the race must be Jeff Burton. For the second time in just 14 races Jeff Burton won a rain shortened race this Sunday and collected a 1 Million dollar bonus from RJ Reynolds for himself and a lucky fan.

Although I'm sure Joyce Williams (the new millionaire) would disagree, most race fans were hoping that the race would be able to continue. Burton had Tony Stewart closing fast in second place and teammate Mark Martin was running a strong third. This was shaping up to be a great battle before Mother Nature closed in and shortened the scheduled 267 lap event to just 148 laps.

Points Update

The 2000 points battle is starting to take shape here in the early season. Bobby Labonte is the new points leader with Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin close behind.

While it's still too early in the year for a meaningful analysis, it's interesting to note that already in this young season the top-five drivers from the 1999 Winston Cup Championship battle have found their way to the top of the heap already.

Bobby Labonte, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin are traditionally so consistent that their great start to the season certainly does not bode well for the drivers trying to catch them from behind.
