Top Row Seat - 1999 Preview

Dateline: 1/18/99

Due to some minor technical issues I have not been able to update this site for that last couple of weeks. It was a very busy time for race teams as many teams finalized their 1999 driver/crew chief/sponsor combinations. Also, testing continued at Daytona as the Ford teams got their final shot at the big track before SpeedWeeks and GM teams got their first crack at testing.

The first big news over the last couple of weeks was Darrell Waltrip's announcement that he has found a home for the 1999 season as a teammate to Jimmy Spencer in Travis Carter's stable. Although this is a great opportunity for Darrell to get into a higher quality seat than he has been driving I was a little disappointed to see them name a relative no-name as the crew chief.

Good luck Darrell! I know NASCAR fans everywhere would love to see you get one more win.

On the testing front. Ford teams finally showed up to test during Daytona's final Ford test session. It was Rusty Wallace showing the way with a speed that would have easily put him on last year's pole. Before you all get too excited about that, don't forget that there is no inspection area set up during testing. Teams are allowed to run any combination that they want, legal or not. So just because Rusty was fastest in January, that does not automatically translate to a pole in February.

GM teams get their final shot at open testing at Daytona this week.

Does DW still have it in him to win one? Can Travis Carter put him in a car that's capable of winning? Stop by the bulletin boards and let me know what you think.
