"2000 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR PREVIEW" >Page 1, 2, 3
Now we reach the cream of this season's rookie crop. Both of these remaining rookies have every bit as much potential as last season's rookie phenom Tony Stewart. However only one of them can be crowned Rookie of the Year.
The Top Of The Heap
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will leave the Busch series after having won it's last two consecutive championships. With big name sponsorship in the form of Budweiser and a big name car owner in the form of his father "Little E" will have some strong runs in 2000 and should comfortably qualify for every race and have some strong runs.
However, Dale Earnhardt the car owner has not yet proven that he can consistently field a strong car for Steve Park who in turn has never had a teammate before. This combination of factors keeps Dale Jr. from winning the Rookie of the Year honors in 2000.
So this leaves only one name remaining. The 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year is Matt Kenseth. Moving up from BGN where he finished second in the points the last two seasons Matt brings DeWalt along with him as the sponsor. Matt has more experience in the Winston Cup series than anyone else in this field with fill-in starts for Bill Elliott as well as a few preliminary starts in his own car. However the biggest difference between Matt and everyone else is that Matt is joining Jack Roush racing.
With veteran crew chief Robby Reiser calling the shots and Jack Roush horsepower under the hood Matt should have fewer complaints about his ride than the others. Add proven teammates Mark Martin and Jeff Burton to the mix and you have got a powerful combination that should comfortably win the Rookie of the Year for the 2000 season.
