Definition: The final qualifier when there are an odd number of starters in the race. This driver has the entire last row of the starting grid to himself and can choose either the inside or outside lane.

Also Known As: shotgun, starting scratch, champion's provisional

Examples: He really blew his qualifing run and just squeaked into the race with a provisional. He's going to start shotgun on the field but at least he's in the race.
