2004 Raybestos Rookie Of The Year Preview - Middle Of The Road

Lots of potential here if they can get the elusive chemistry just right

More Driver Than Team

Scott Riggs has shown in the Busch series that he knows how to win and can hustle a car for all it is worth when the time is right. However, the #10 Valvoline car that he is getting into has rarely shown to be worth much.

I do believe that Riggs has talent. The problem is that the MBV Motorsports team has never been able to field a consistent contender. Maybe the only thing lacking is the elusive "chemistry" and with Riggs in the seat the #10 will magically run up front? Stranger things have happened but it is much more likely that improvement will take time. To add to this team's workload they are being forced to switch from the abandoned Pontiacs to Chevys for the 2004 season.

I see big things ahead for Riggs and the Valvoline team, but not necessarily in 2004.

More Team Than Driver

I find it interesting how certain teams pick the same type of driver over and over again. Scott Wimmer reminds me a great deal of Ward Burton. Both are good solid middle-of-the-road drivers who are capable of hauling down a big win now and then, but neither are destined for greatness.

Frank Stoddard stays on as crew chief and has a lot to offer to help Wimmer find his footing in the big league. On the down side Bill Davis Racing has lost Dodge factory support which will definitely hurt their performance in 2004.

I think this team will reach its potential more quickly than the others on this list, but that their potential is limited.
