The making of a sim racing addict

My sim racing experience

NASCAR Racing 2003 Season box

Papyrus Racing Games' newest edition of their legendary NASCAR Racing series.

My first driving game ever was Indy 500 for the Atari 2600. I spent hours and hours turning laps around the "ice" oval. Driving with the little hand held wheel and one button for the accelerator was pure heaven. I upgraded to PC racing sims in the late Eighties when I first discovered Indianapolis 500 from Papyrus. I didn't have a wheel then (did they even make wheels back then?) and used to run for hours with the keyboard.

I followed that up with IndyCar Racing and F1 World Circuit (still keyboard racing) but the defining moment of my simming life was the release of Papyrus' NASCAR Racing 1. I bought my copy the day it hit store shelves and was instantly addicted. Since then I have followed along, buying every Papyrus product the day it hit store shelves.

These days I do run the occasional Dirst Track Racing 2, Pro Race Driver 2 or Indy Car Racing but Papyrus' NASCAR Racing series remains my first love.

My very first wheel came a couple of months after I began racing NASCAR 1. It was a Thrustmaster T1. I followed that up a couple of years later with a T2 that remained my "everyday driver" for years. I then rotated through a few different wheels and now primarily use the Logitech Momo Racing (black) wheel. It's just a matter of time (and budget) before I give in and purchase a Thomas or ECCI wheel.

These days with work, family and so on I just don't have the free time to race that I used to but on average I still manage to squeeze in 3 or 4 hours a week behind the wheel.
