NASCAR Winston Cup Mid-Season Recap

One race past halfway can Kenseth be caught?

Jul 21 2003
This week the NASCAR Winston Cup season ran race number nineteen out of the scheduled thirty-six race season. From here to the finale in Homestead there are no off-weeks. If you're going to be in position to make a splash in 2003 you had better already be firing on all cylinders.

Lonely At The Top

The Winston Cup Champion for 2003 is... yet to be determined. However, given Matt Kenseth's huge 234 point lead the Winston Cup title is clearly his to lose. With fifteen top-ten finishes already under his belt he is not showing any signs of slowing down.

If anybody can catch him it is going to have to be Jeff Gordon. Still rebounding from two early season finishes in the thirties Gordon has come on strong to take second.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is still within reach, but consistency has become a problem for him lately with two finishes in the bottom third of the field in the last eight races.

Clearly there is still a lot of racing left to go but the Winston Cup Championship is down to these three drivers. Kenseth's huge lead, his experienced team and Jack Roush's money makes him the huge favorite. However, this is NASCAR and stranger things have happened.

If Kenseth can get through August with the majority of his lead intact I'll be ready to declare him the 2003 champ.
