See More Great Short Track Racing

Tuesday April 1, 2008
A couple of weeks of NASCAR short-track racing has me excited for more. Depending on what part of the country you live in your local race track either already has or will soon be kicking off its 2008 season. If you love short track racing then you owe it to yourself get out and support your local racing scene.

Who knows? The 2015 Sprint Cup Champion might be tearing up your local speedway this weekend. When he hits it big you'll be able to say that you knew him way back when.

You are spot on about the local short tracks. I had the pleasure of seeing Alan Kulwicki race at WIR in Kaukauna, WI before he headed south for the big time. And, I saw Matt Kenseth win several times at the 1/4 mile Slinger Speedway. My wife and I get to as many local races as we can every year.

I’m sorry but the 4 hours plus for these wreck fests is ridiculous. I walked the dog, cleaned my garage and still caught the end of the race. Either cut the laps down or figure some other way to get these under 3 hours.

Mike in WI, you are correct, racing at WIR was always a hoot. I moved from Wisconsin 14 years ago, and I miss the “mini Daytona” track. Nothing like seeing those cars roar down the front stretch dog leg righ at ya. I miss the days of Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle, Tom Reffner, Joe Shear at WIR.
There is another short track between Wis. Rapids and St. Point in central Wisconsin called “Golden Sand Speedway”. This track has gone thru many a hands over the years, but the current owners have had it for a few years and have really made it a great family friendly track with some fantastic racing. Every time I am back home, I try to get to a race out there. Really brings back memories. Many a Nascar stars have cut thier teeth on this and other Wisconsin tarcks like Dick Trickle, Alan K., Matt Kenseth, Robbie Riser, Dave Marcus, Even Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace and Dale Sr. made treks to the north to race the ovals of Wisconsin.
I think Dick Trickle was the one who coined the phrase “jet fighters in a gymnasium” when he was referring to Slinger Speedway.

1969RS - I have been to Golden Sands several times. It is the cleanest short track facility I have ever been to, and the racing is fanastic! I believe it is one of the tracks last weeks Nationwide winner Scott Wimmer ran on a weekly basis.
I think you are correct on the Dick Trickle quote. He wasn’t too far off the mark either!
Herb Iverson from Michigan lways had the best sounding car at WIR - but that was in the pre-muffler days!

Yes Mike, you are right, I had forgotten that Scott ran there.
Do you remember Sonny Imerfaull running the “4U” car at Golden Sands? If I recall, he ran a Mercury Comet and in place of headers, he has 8 straight pipes that popped out of the hood. Now that is the sound of raw HP! YEE HAA!
Unfortunatly, I read that Sonny passed away a few weeks back. I remember Herb Iverson as well. Johnny Benson ran semi regular at WIR as well.
