Sprint Cup Awards Banquet Moves to SPEED
NASCAR announced this week that this year the Sprint Cup awards banquet will move from the ESPN family to SPEED. ESPN Classic was willing to cover the banquet but was not interested in a live broadcast.
SPEED will show the December 4th awards ceremony live from end-to-end. The banquet is scheduled to be shown live on SPEED from 9pm - 1am Eastern time. In case you miss it the banquet will be re-aired at 1pm on both the 5th and 6th.
Wow, even the lowly ESPN Classic can't clear a spot for the NASCAR awards ceremony? Are there really so many fans of the World's Strongest Man competition from 1981 that they can't take a break to show a live sports banquet?
Clearly this is a great move for NASCAR. SPEED was created by race fans for race fans and I have no doubt that they will do a great job covering the festivities.

Well, good for Speed & NASCAR!! It’s about time NASCAR looked to Speed for ALL their broadcast needs!!! ESPN & ABC do a very poor job & Speed needs to pick through the people used by ESPN & ABC for broadcasting the shows! Some of them are good & some of them are, well, you get the idea!
Go Tony Go!!!
SPEED does a great job of covering NASCAR. I cant imagine being a fan of NASCAR and not having the speed channel. As for ESPN Classic, Directv, in their infinite wisdom or lack thereof, decided to move ESPN Classic to a higher tier sports package. So, a lot of people would have missed the broadcast anyway.
ESPN does a poor job of covering NASCAR. With the exception of their excellent coverage of NCAA football, I think ESPN should just be renamed the NFL/MLB network. Heck, they cover NHL more than NASCAR.
I would like to see more complete races on SPEED. Their coverage is second to none and they clearly love what they are doing.
Good for SPEED. SPEED shows more respect for the sport and they have better broadcasts.
NHRA Should go to speed and get off of ESPN2. I can’t tell you how many times I turn on a race and it’s held up by a football or basket ball game going over!!
I hate NASCAR on ABC, ESPN, Fox & TNT. When it is time for the pre-race activities, they think nothing of allowing some other much lesser sport or other programing to interfere with the NASCAR program. It should all be on SPEED whose programs are dedicated to mostly Racing.
I have to say, of all the channels NASCAR is on, SPEED is my favorite. The reason? The reporters and announcers actually know what they’re talking about!!! =) They know racing for real, not just the names and stats.
It doesn’t matter what channel it’ll be on, it’s always a major snore every year. The telepromter makes the drivers act like stupid robots which is far from their (*limited*) personality at the track.
And who really wants to say congrats to the same driver 4 years ina row? You could tell last year that the drivers were terribly annoyed that Jimmie was up on center stage AGAIN. And don’t deny that you know Jimmie will get the championship. He’s strong at Phoenix and Homestead. Unless somebody knocks him out early, he’s got this championship in the bag.
It’s about time that a motor sports banquet was broadcast live on a channel that was made for race fans, SPEED. Espn is just as bad at the banquet as they are televising the races during the race year. Everything that Nascar does should be on Speed. Nascar needs to get rid of Espn and Espn on Abc, whatever that means, and show them that they are not needed.
they should get an Extra Channel 4 NASCAR and an Extra Channel 4 NHRA so they can broadcast everything all day everyday and still keep SPEED for other racing and stuff
ESPN has sucked for the last few years and their announcers especially Jerry Punch. It seems that the camara is never on the subject that he is talking about and he always calls a pass the wrong way, Gordon passing Martin, no, it’s Martin passing Gordon. A change for the lead sometimes comes 2-3 laps after it has happened. I sure am glad to see SPEED having the banquet and wish they could have all Nascar races. They have announcers that know what they are talking about. Steve, Larry, Michael, Darrell, the Biff, Kenny, Jimmy, big John, and the rest of the crew, even the camara people, just everybody seems to know just what to do. It seems to be a great family of information from all aspects of the sport. I just tread when ESPN on ABC comes on, it is just disaster. I almost forgot the pit people, what a great job they do, big Bob and Chris, Wendy and the rest of the pit roamers. I just can’t say enough about this great channel and their committment towards getting it correct. Go Speed go.
