Jamie McMurray Claims Ugly Talladega Finish
Jamie McMurray did a nice job of staying out of trouble and drove a fast car to Victory Lane during the 2009 AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. However the mess that NASCAR created behind him was just ugly. There is no other word for it that I can use on this site.
NASCAR has not been able to fix the restrictor place problem for the last 20 years. This racing was terrible and clearly someone is going to get hurt. There seems to be no fix for the problem. Maybe it is time for drastic measures. How about building a nice 3/4 mile high banked oval and declaring that Talladega Superspeedway?

I couldn’t agree more Steve,The fate of Talladega is at hand.I think it’s time to make some major changes,A 3/4 high banked track would be perfect,They could also have a 1/2 dirt track for late models and sprints, there is plenty of room inside the track…I don’t ever want to see another Race (If you can call it that) at Talladega.
Why do we have to see cars race at around 200 mph. What if the engine size and horse power was cut down for restrictor plate tracks? I’m talking less cubic inches and non-restricted two barrel carborators with the ability to accelerate away from all that traffic. If the cars were able to run at speeds of 170 plus or minus the race would be like many of the medium size tracks.
I had been pumped up for weeks waiting on this race: I was completely disappointed.
It was worse than the Brick Yard!
I give you NASCAR with its last minute rule change as usual. I give you Tony Stewart who at about lap 88 made the comment that the race is boring and he was falling asleep. So way I. In fact I took my dog for a walk and returned around lap 140 for the end. I give you Ryan Newman who after his crash apologised to the fans for such a boring race and laid in to NASCAR. I give you Bret Farve and what an NFL game. NASCAR has lost it.
I have wasted time and my last dollar for anything nascar. We have been watching races on tv less due to the bore factor. The problem is not dega it is the people in charge at nascar.(NOT A CLUE WHAT THE FANS WANT)
Decided to go to Talladega to give the family a exciting day out. What a let down, before lap 50 my three sons told me they were bored and wanted to go home. I gave in to my boys wishes shortly after half way of the race. (DONE SON!!!!!!!!)
I agree with troy, limit the size of the engines and then let the teams do their thing. Watching the traffic on I-90 is more exciting than that race. Somebody had better wake nascar up pretty soon before it’s to late(if it’s not to late already) Maybe it’s about time for a new group to start running these tracks.
Congrats to Jamie on a win, Also to Jimmie for locking up his 4th title.
NASCAR showed us that they RULE the hen house by making rules up as they go, BUT the drivers showed NASCAR that they can have the final say.
It was Awesome seeing the drivers all going half throttle and driving parade laps at what should be one of the most exciting races of the yr.
NASCAR needs to take this as a show of unity by the Drivers and stop trying to make the sport fail, Remember NASCAR without the Drivers/Fans/Sponsors you have nothing!
After seeing the crashes of late, I would like to see more Support in the roof area of the cars, IE: Center Post Vertical or atleast more support bars in the cage.
The bottom line is, There are other Players out there that would love to slide into NASCAR’S seat and let the drivers race again!!
NASCAR BEWARE!
I lost interest in this sport the day the late Dale Earnhardt lost his life. I knew then that there would be changes, some good but for the most part they have been very bad for all involved incluuding us fans.
Goodby to Nascar is all I have left to say!
NASCAR Drivers get one vote ea. car owners 2 votes for each car, on ALL NASCAR Rules!! If I was a car owner you would NOT see my cars in any boring, restrictive plate/speed governed race… Under current rules for my sponsors I’d have them run first lap then park.
Cars wouldn’t be so tight throughout the entire race if they removed restrictor plates. Get rid of them, get rid of the “Lucky Dog”, let the race be determined by the best driver/car/team performance.
This is what racing is all about. Go back to the basics and give the fans back the sport we grew up with.
I’m very happy everyone made it out of those crashes. Those were ugly.
Anybody else notice how Johnson hid in the back of the pack all day and then at the very end, everyone crashed out in front of him and he ended up 6th?
Sorry, but that’s not being a racer to me. You may call it good strategy, but I call it being a chicken %&#$ driver. Get your butt up there and race like you freakin want it!!
Nobody who goes for sunday drives deserves a $10 million check and a championship title. If NASCAR will let a chicken %&#$ driver put his name up where the REAL drivers had once truly earned it, then I want absolutely nothing to do with them anymore.
I’m going back to where the REAL racing is.
Let me start my saying i am finished with NASCAR.
1st. Jimmy Johnson should not be allowed to race the next race. Johnson ripped alot of fans that payed to see racing. Last i was told to get a pay check you need to do your job.(that would be press the pedal on the right and shut up or find another job) Ryan Newman you do not know what the fans want so shutup. Gordan stop crying we do not care what you think. JR shutup and get on the wheel, that would be your job! Not finding lame reasons for your short comings as a driver.
The track is the problem. The configuration allows for the large packs of cars.
The cars are all uniform “cookie-cutter” clones and with restrictor plates are capable of running at top speed.
My suggestion is to build in a long narrow section on the back stretch of the track that would only allow 2 wide racing (for safety’s sake, just move the yellow line up the track) in order to break up the packs.
Nascar can not race at Telledega again until the speeds of the cars can be reduced to 175 mph. Cut down the corners to no more than 20degrees. Cut the laps to 100. If you have to put a restrictor plate on a carburetor than there is more of a problem than the engine. It must be the design of the track. There is no reason for Ryan Newman’s car to have flipped over as big as he is or Mark Martin’s car to go over because of how clean he races, it is something else.
I have always looked forward to the restictor plate races, Daytona and Dega. I agree with most here it was one of the most boring races I have ever seen. Nascar needs to let the drivers do what drivers do and that is race. I see the reason for restictor plates at these tracks, it is just to fast, but drivers are going to find a way to go fater thats what they do. I suggest taking away the double line and let them drive on the apron if they want to who cares, it gives them more room to pass or get out of the way. Bump drafting is part of the restictor plate races, it is an art and see so little of it at Dega was VERY VERY disappointing.
Slowing the cars down by going to smaller engines, etc. is not the answer. If that is the solution why not just make it a go cart track? Cost of changing configuartion of the track makes that out of the question. Remove the restrictor plates and increase the wind resistance, spoiler size and angle creating more downforce which not only slows the cars but gives the drivers more control and power when it’s needed so they can RACE….not go for a Sunday drive. Then TURN ‘EM LOOSE!!!!
