Inaugural Hall of Fame Class Announced

By , About.com GuideOctober 14, 2009

Follow me on:

NASCAR announced the inaugural NASCAR Hall of Fame class.  Five people were selected from among the list of 25 nominees.  Those five will be enshrined in the official NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte when it opens in 2010.

I listed my suggestions for the inaugural class when the Hall was announced in 2006.  It took over three years to reach this point but we finally have the official list.

  1. Dale Earnhardt
  2. Bill France Sr.
  3. Bill France Jr.
  4. Richard Petty
  5. Junior Johnson

Could anyone possibly argue over these picks?  Is there anyone more deserving?

LOL, I knew someone would do the math. :)

I am not sure what I was thinking in leaving Bill Jr. out. Considering the growth of the sport under his leadership he seems like such an obvious first-ballot choice.

In agreement with four of the choices. Having Bill France Jr. in is merely a sop to the family that owns NASCAR “lock, stock and barrel.” Talk about making up to the family. Not bringing in either David P. or Cale Y. is an insult in the least instance.

Who counted the votes the france family? Earnhart would not have wone 7 championships if nascar hadnt let him wreck so many people along the way. The day he died was a good day. Pearson and Cale should have been. The Wood brothers should have been as well.

that’s a little harsh to say about earnhardt… i was never a fan of him or jr. at all, but the day he died was not a good one… yes he did wreck a lot of people but sr. had talent and was still there to win those races wreck or not… i personally think it would have been different going againts my man 48, 18 or 24, but that’s what makes you a fan liking who you like back then it was the 5 of labonte, and you know about that rivalry… but to say the day he died was a good day is childish…
