Joey Logano Wins Rain-Shortened New Hampshire Race

Monday June 29, 2009
Rookie Joey Logano became the youngest winner in the history of the Cup series with his win today in the rain-shortened 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Logano did his part but it was crew chief Greg Zippadelli who really won this race. Zippadelli's strategy got Logano out front when the rain came forcing the race to be stopped short of the scheduled race distance.

Logano certainly didn't have the best car but it takes more than a fast car to win. Strategy and luck play just as large a roll. While I prefer to see races decided in a door-to-door battle on the track I can appreciate an occasional brilliant strategic victory like this one.

It seems that its getting to be pretty regular for the New Hampshire race to end with
rain. One solution to this is to start the race an hour earlier and dispense with all the bull leading up to the race. Or just don’t race at New Hampshire until the fall.

This win is a win, earned by strategy. But its the same as Reutimann, a rain win is not the same as a full-length race win, especially for a first win.

I agree with the first comment. Dispense with the lead up bull, nobody cares, race later, such as July, and finally, consider a rule barring a win for rain, unless the winner has led at least 5 laps during the race or 3 laps just prior to the finish. Gordon should have won this race, and for fans who paid dearly, it sucked.
