NASCAR Ready for Final Road Race of 2008

Thursday August 7, 2008
2008 Centurion Boats at the GlenThis weekend Watkins Glen, New York will host the NASCAR Sprint Cup stars on the winding 2.45 mile road course. Watkins Glen will bring out the usual road racing experts to challenge NASCAR's best. P.J. Jones, Ron Fellows and Boris Said will all try to make the field. Will one of them be able to beat NASCAR's best?

One of the growing stories in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing is that Tony Stewart has not won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race since his victory here last year. Will this be the weekend that he returns to Victory Lane? He has won four of the last six Watkins Glen events including the 2007 edition.

The #20 certainly has shined over the past several years at Watkins Glen. However, with the #8 car rising to the occasion over the past several weeks I am convinced that 1)I would expect the consistency of that race team to continue and 2) Mark Martin is not a stranger to victory lane at that track. My prediction, the number 8 will be back in winners circle after a long hiatus

Seriously, they need a couple more road races on the sprint cup schedule. Two is not enough. Four is more acceptable. They should try to go to Mid-Ohio and Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

I love the road races, their fun to watch and they drive the crew cheifs nuts because of all the strategy. Plus, it shows the flexibility of the drivers. The road races are won usually by the best drivers (Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch) so it will be fun to see another guy give them a run for their money (Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards, etc)

Can someone explain why qualifying at the Glen was not at least attempted? It just doesn’t seem fair to those like Boris Said and the others who aren’t in on owner points. Was this another poor decision by NASCAR?

Nascar needs to get rid of the “top 35 in points” automatic in the race. If this keeps us, there will only be 36 race teams running a race. The cost of racing is booming and finding big sponsors is not. Lets get back to everybody qualifiing and let the times put the racers in the race. If it rains, go back to the last race and the way they finished and that way you will still have a full field and every driver has a fair chance to race.
