NASCAR Apologizes for Brickyard Fiasco

Wednesday July 30, 2008
NASCAR today apologized for last weekend's Sprint Cup race in Indianapolis. "We've got to do a better job" said NASCAR's Vice-President of Competition Robin Pemberton. "I can't say enough how sorry we are" he continued and vowed to not let this happen again.

I am glad that NASCAR didn't just sweep this mess under the rug or try to gloss it over. Clearly this race was terrible. However, NASCAR has acknowledged that there was a problem and vowed to make sure that it doesn't happen again. I think that given the circumstances this is about the best we can expect.

All I can say if i had saved up and traveled to see my first race with my family I would have cried at the result of all my time and money spent!
The saddest part is, all that NASCAR feels they need to do is offer a sorry and we won’t let it happen again?
I do believe that NASCAR just took another hit on the shrinking fan base yet again,I think there should be a rule in place that states the drivers have to take a pay cut if the race is just for show!
The People that spent their hard earned money need to get a percentage of the ticket cost back!
No one should have to pay full price to a event that is a Farce!!

We did spend our hard earned money (to the tune of $800.00) for this past weekend in Indy and the pitiful “I’m sorry” does not help!!!!! They knew there was a problem Friday and did nothing to correct it. The drivers are not to blame, they were all on the scanners complaining about how this must suck for the fans.

(3) Sooner says:

Yea, that must have been really bad for all the fans that attended. It was bad enough for the ones that watched or tried to, on tv. NASCAR should be refunding 50% of the ticket price.

(4) mick20 says:

EACH PERSON THAT MAILS A TICKET STUB TO nascar SHOULD RECEIVE A 50% REFUND WHICH SHOULD BE SPLIT BY NASCAR & GOODYEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watched the race from the green flag to about 100 laps to go & switched to Baseball! What A joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is pretty sad, when a baseball game proves to be more exciting than a NASCAR race!

This race was a total fiasco!!! What a hit for Nascar, not to mention what a disappointment for all us fans, especially the ones that attended the most anticipated race of the season. Nascar needs to do something real big to live this one down. I love Nascar, but this time around, they really BLEW IT!!!!!!!!! Glad I stayed home!!

(7) motocrossed says:

the drivers are blameless, they have contracts they had to race. I remember first thing out of Carl Edwards mouth was that he was sorry that the fans had to see this fiasco. NASCAR needs to rethink the COT, it has been the cause of the boring racing this year and the tire issues at INDY. Can’t really blame Goodyear, limited testing, and not a lot of time with COT at the track, they tried and lost. Out of fear for their lives drivers were probably racking 4/5 speed and taking it extra cautious. I kept waiting for the race to improve, never did. I am not an expert but expect more out of the expert sanctioning body. Indy car keeps looking better and better. Well balanced and well designed cars, same track, no tire issues, hmmmmmm

(8) Softoon says:

The race was vary boring !!. This was my 4th year going to it and may be my last. I traveled 350 miles stayed 4 nights and spent a bunch of money on track stuff and meals. Nascar and Goodyear need to give us ( the people who attended the race)some credit towards next years ticket should we renew, or else we do not renew.

There has got be other tire companies out there ! Have all tire companies prove their tires are good for the track and the cars or else kick them out of the track. If we were not doing our jobs good we would be fired !! Maybe thats what needs to happen to Goodyear or the leaders of Nascar..

(9) tom Collins says:

I was at the race, my family spent over 1000. spent 4 days, and it was disgusting. I now know what it feels like to be scammed! after 15 years, 25 NASCAR races all over America,
I WILL NEVER BE BACK. I could not believe that noone would stop that fiasco. NASCAR needs brought down to earth. Maybe a national body that can protect fans from being ripped off?

(10) AJ says:

Maybe you could vote for Obama so if he gets in, he could regulate Nascar too!

(11) anita jo says:

never in all of my years watching & going to a nascar race, have i ever saw such a terrible race. cautions every 14 - 15 laps. nascar & goodyear knew on friday that there was a problem with the tires. goodyear & nascar should have done something then. not, wait till the race & throw all of those cautions. i was really dissapointed in nascar & good year both. maybe, nascar should have listened to what tony said about the tires after all & got another tire co. onborad.

(12) softoon says:

Yeah AJ or maybe we could vote McCain I sure he can fix it!! HA HA… No more Bush politics……

(13) BadBob says:

Well, now that Nascar has apologized for the fiasco of last weeks race at Indy, are the Owners and Drivers going to fine them $150,000 and suspend them and put them on probation through the end of the 2008 year? I don’t think so. Pocono is the same type of track, lets hope the race will go at least 20 laps before a debris caution is called for the whole track being a big debris. That sure did not improve race relations.

(14) CEfan says:

I do believe the fans who bought tickets should get something for being there. As for the drivers paying back, they worked their tails off trying to race that track! They earned their pay!
Goodyear and NASCAR needs to work out better test scheduling, that’s for sure!

August 1, 2008 at 8:04 am
(15) Becky T says:

Nascar & Goodyear should reimburse everyone 100% of their ticket and travel costs. Goodyear & Nascar knew after their test in April that the tires were falling apart after about 5 laps. Why didn’t Goodyear make a different compound and have another test before this race. If that would not have worked, then Nascar should have made some changes for more down force in the front of these cars!!!!!!!!!!! I will never waste my money going to Indy. Good thing I turned down going to this race and went camping up north instead.

(16) Evie from Michigan says:

I am sorry the race was so boring - I never miss a race - except this one - I was vising, they had the ball game on - which I had always watched - until I got the Nascar-fever, a few years ago= the game proved to be very exciting , I even made the comment- “wow this game really has me excited.” but the idea of missing my race was not far from my upset-self = now baseball is looking better in my future - they should have listened to ‘my’ Tony !!- about the tire company the start of this season!!!- GOooo TONY !!!!

(17) Lauren says:

I watched the race from home, and after a hour or so I couldn’t watch it anymore. I spent the time with my husband in the garage restoring his car, lot’s more fun. Jimmie Johnson was given the race! I am almost ashamed to say I am a NASCAR fan, they need to go back to what they were so long ago.

(18) LadyRoush says:

Come on People, lets get real! We are so spoiled that we think that every problem needs to be “reimbursed”. Get over it, that’s racing!!! Grow Up!

August 1, 2008 at 2:33 pm
(19) TLabonte Fan says:

Mrs. Rousch,

I agree that the idea of re-imbursements is not going to happen, but your wrong if you dont think NASCAR should take it in the proverbial financial shorts for this disaster. How often do you we all take a financial hit for sub-par performance. This thing last Sunday was an insult to sub-par performances. NASCAR deserves loss in revenues for that disaster. If not from a drop in viewership and attendance, then certainly from sponsors who may pull those potential advertising dollars off the table. I would not want any marketing assets I was in control of to be going to NASCAR right now.

August 1, 2008 at 9:42 pm
(20) Tim says:

Yes, it was a disaster of a race, but don’t blame Jimmie… At least he and Carl drove their rearends off for everybody at the end and all day long for that matter… He wasn’t given the race, everybody had the same time to strategize all race long… Anyway, the tire issue needs to be resolved somehow…

August 2, 2008 at 1:24 pm
(21) Schinbone says:

I do not believe Brian France knows what he is doing. The car of tomorrow is even less racey than the old car. The chase, cot, sorry I really lost interest. Been watching the other France family members series, ALMS. Great racing.

August 3, 2008 at 2:01 pm
(22) Koolau says:

Refund? Grow up will you! Do NFL or fight fans ask for a refund when performance lacks!

I do have two suggestions to NASCAR, rather than flip flopping TV networks, which often tests viewers’ patience, stay with only one. Also, how about assigning certain tire manufacturers to specific race tracks only? The competition should keep them on the ball (and who’s in their rearview mirror) and focused on engineering tires specifically for those racetracks they’re responsible for. It doesn’t seem that Goodyear’s engineers are capable of keeping up with ongoing track condition changes.

(23) Terry says:

It is amazing that Nascar, in only a years time, has accomplished thier misson—- Make stockcar racing as exciting as watching golf!
