Should NASCAR Schedule More Night Races?

Tuesday May 13, 2008
The month of May is dominated by night racing. Richmond, Darlington and two weeks in a row Lowes Motor Speedway all race under the lights to fill the May NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. Personally I love night racing. The colors seem brighter and the action is more intense when the sun goes down.

On the downside, night races potentially cut into the crowds at the local racing level. Race fans might decide to stay home to watch the NASCAR race instead of going out to support their local track.

What do you think? Should NASCAR schedule more night races?

In case nobody has noticed, people can’t afford to drive to the local tracks anymore. I don’t think you can blame NASCAR for that… local tracks are getting the shaft from the crooked oil companies that are making their $100 million profits every quarter.

I think it quite obvious that Night Cup Racing hurts local tracks just by being scheduled for the most popular Short Track night race night, Saturday. Also, race fans have a budget for their racing fixes and NASCAR Cup racing cuts into local tracks pockets as the popularity of Stockcar Racings expands. Personally I’ve seen the affects of NACAR Cup racing on a local track. Wall Township Speedway has close it’s doors forever. After 50+ years of racing in NJ the best paved highbanked short track is being closed because the owners can put asses in the seats. I think NASCAR Cup should help subsidize the local tracks like the minor leagues in baseball. After all this is where there STARS come from. So, night racing is ok except on Saturday Night. Why not race on Sunday Night?

I have been going to TMS since it opened and have PSL seats. The truck and indy races there at night and it is really great. I do wish that one of the cup/nationwide races was under the lights. I also have season tickets the Kansas Speedway and they have no lights. The problem with not having lights is that if there is a delay, the race may have to be shortened.

I personally only watch the night races when my local dirt track is rained out. Yeah, they are fun to watch, but not as fun as the locals beating doors on the dirt!

I haven’t seen a night race in real time for a couple of years because Saturday nights are when people go out socializing. Movies, dancing, dates, get together with friends are Saturday functions. We are lucky here on Long Island in New York - we have reasonable priced race tour buses to several of the tracks.

Not only should there be more night racing but Speed Channel should broadcast all of them. Their announcers know what they are talking about unlike ESPN. I am sure that the drivers would like to have a Sunday off and it is a win win for everybody.

Granted local tracks may, and I emphasize ‘may’, be suffering due to Sprint Cup night races being broadcast but if one ‘assumes’ the big guys racing at night is the sole reason why the local tracks struggle they would no doubt be absolutely positively incorrect. Besides hasn’t anyone heard of this incredible new technology where you can actually record shows on television while you either watch a different show or go out and do something else…something else like attend a race at your local track maybe???

I love the night races and do wish there were more of them. Why? Because they are fun to watch feeling a bit more like good ol’ Saturday night racing like I had growing up and because it frees me up for enjoying outdoor activities on Sunday with my family.

I say more night races! The local tracks will survive or they won’t but it won’t have much if anything at all to do with when NASCAR broadcasts it races.

The point is why does it have to be SATURDAY Night? Sunday is equal to Saturday. I’d prefer Sunday Night so I could do both go to the local track and sit back in my recliner and watch the high priced talent go round in circles. Saturday night is traditional for the local racers all over the country. The cup guys could leave them their once a week spot light. As far as recording the races some how it’s not the same as seeing it live. When would you watch it? Sunday Night!

Sunday night would be more diffucult for fans to get off work .on monday, and if rain delay teusday. It would not give much time for teams to prepare, and transport to next race.I like the variaty of races.

I looooooove night races! So yes I would love to see some more on the schedule. Saturdays are a lot better than Sunday’s for a lot of people so it would be a fair advantage.
