Does NASCAR Belong In Mexico?

Thursday April 17, 2008
This weekend the road course at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez near Mexico City will host the Nationwide series stars. Since the Sprint Cup series has the weekend off we can expect a bunch of Sprint Cup regulars to crash the party to try and gain some valuable road racing experience.

This will mark the fourth anniversary of this Mexico City event. There are large portions of the United States that are still without a NASCAR event within easy reach. Should NASCAR be spending its precious race weekends outside of the country?

(1) Valgerd says:

Quite frankly I find it highly disturbing that NASCAR is reaching outside the US for both races and drivers. This started as an *American* pastime based on the old moonshine and white lightning drivers showing off their skills. There’s far too many tracks where the races were once held that are no longer on the circuit. So much for loyalty to those who helped keep alive the traditions, hey NASCAR? To be honest, NASCAR has lost this household watching their races held in foreign lands. Wake up, NASCAR, and go back to your roots if you want to honor the traditions you sprung from and keep your fan base.

(2) whiner says:

I don’t think nascar should go out side
the usa to race. This is and always and should be about american racing not forien racing. I also Think it might be dangerious for out drivers to be exposed to posible terrorist threats that might spark if they continue to go to other countries. I really think that we should’nt have forien drivers competing in the nascar series. This is the great american race series.

(3) WV Rambler says:

NASCAR Racing is an American Sport and all races should be in the USA. If NASCAR wants to sponsor races in other countries do so under a different name. NASCAR brings people from outside the USA to the local races and that is good for our economy.

(4) Dee says:

Didn’t Brian France say at the beginning of the season that NASCAR wanted to get back to its roots? Didn’t know there were any roots in Mexico.

(5) Franklin Cox says:

I don’t want to see nascar move out of the country but I can see it going. kind of reminds you of wal-mart, once it got so big, it was all about profits & margins.

Whiner:

While I respect your desire to keep NASCAR in the U.S., your argument is damaged by the absolutely terrible use of the English (or should that be the American) language. - IAN

(7) Dennis McGroarty says:

When you consider Mexico’s arrogance and
Political attitude towards the US on almost all issues; ie, Immigration, border, extradition, corruption, why would we do anything to help their economy is absurd. Too many cities here that would enjoy NASCAR.

April 17, 2008 at 1:37 pm
(8) Smoke62 says:

I’d just like to say I don’t agree with Nascar going out of the country to race, but I can see where it comes from. We, as americans, have all these organizations helping people all over the world, yet we have families right here in the US that are going hungry or living in cardboard boxes. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in helping others, but I think it should start at home first.

(9) Laura says:

Hm.. Leave it to Brian France to screw up more of the original Nascar “Back In The Day”!!! Values!!! Mexico Is Not Red Neck!!!
Uh Next we will be racing in China YUCKY UCKY :-P
NOT ON MY SHIFT!!!

(10) Cheryl Huerta says:

Well with the exception of one comment all of the comments I’ve seen here are picture perfect examples why Americans are hated so much in the rest of the world and terrorist organizations look to target us with their bombs and their hatred. I can’t wait for the old bigotry and paranoid fear to die off at long last so the rest of us can live together happy and in peace.

I am a human being before I’m an American and if other cultures in other countries want to be a part of the great motor sport that originated right here in our country then I’m all for it 1,000,000,000,000%. God Bless NASCAR for moving away from the ‘good ol’ boy bigots’ club and into the modern age! Trust me there are many people out there who will begin to see NASCAR as something of value once this paranoid passe bigoted way of thinking is gone from our sport. This way of thinking is one of the major things that gives NASCAR a bad name in the general public.

I think it’s great that it was a sport that started in the deep south. I think it’s great that the southerners love it so much but that was YESTERDAY. TODAY is here now so let’s just step into the year 2008 and stop hating AND fearing everyone who is different than us! It’s not YOUR sport anymore but thanks for getting it started for the rest of us.

The world is shrinking more and more each day and it’s time everyone faced the fact that we are all human beings with much, much, much more in common than we have that is different about us. I’m just so very proud that NASCAR sees this and is moving into the modern age.

Again KUDOS to NASCAR for taking the Great American Sport to the world! Brian France and team YOU ROCK! Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart.

It is just a matter of time before you see a lot of empty seats, then maybe they will go to China like everything else

(13) Todd says:

What happened to tracks like North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, etc? I think NASCAR needs to serve one country - the country where it was born and raised. The good old US of A.

Just my $.02.

(14) John says:

No,stayhome, next thing you know they will want to go to China and use Chinese cars

April 17, 2008 at 5:28 pm
(15) Ian Rayburn says:

Oh please!! The next thread will go back to the cars & where they are manufactured. The Impalas are made in Canada, the Fusions are made in Mexico, the Toyotas are made in the United States & until recently the Dodges were manufactured by a German company. And many of you have a problem where the races are run!? Give me a break!! - IAN

(16) Sharon C says:

I THINK WE SHOULD STAY IN THE STATES. NASCAR IS AS AMERICAN AS YOU CAN GET. THE OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE THEIR RACES, LET US HAVE OURS. KEEP AMERICAN DOLLARS AT HOME WHERE THEY BELONGN.

April 17, 2008 at 5:51 pm
(17) Evie M. says:

I don’t think they should have gone there in the first place the whole idea is just plain STUPID ! They are just adding yet another reason for the race fans to go take up Lawn Bowling and forget the multi-million dollar France family. The costs alone for a race ticket alone requires an armed guard. Not to mention the Security bill for being in Mexico just to protect the race equipment, but I guess some car owners can afford it ??? God knows the Mexicans are crossing our borders by the droves do we really need to go there for a NASCAR race ??? I think NOT !!!

April 17, 2008 at 6:35 pm
(18) Jeff says:

Well I hate to be the one to tell you people this but no matter what country NASCAR goes to it will always be viewed as an American sport.

Mexico is a perfect place since they are crazy about all forms of auto racing (kinda like myself). They put on a great show since the course is well designed.

I want to use baseball as an example. Baseball was started in the U.S. Gradually it expanded to other regions of the world. Japan was introduced to the game after the war. Today, the Japaneese cant get enough of it and it is their national sport. And basketball is extremely popular in South America and Europe.

Another place NASCAR is popular is Canada. The Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve (that’s Jauques father) is a great course. Speaking of Jauques Villeneuve, since he lost his ride (because for some reason no one would sponsor him, the 1997 world champion. Their loss). he is competing in a stock car series overseas. Mostly they are support races for F1 and he is doing quite well. (I know its just all road course.) But the cars are all built in Charlotte area and are shipped over to them.

In conclusion as I stated before, no matter where NASCAR goes it will always be viewed as an American sport, just as F1 will always be European/Asian, and soccer (or as they say football) will remain a world sport.

April 17, 2008 at 6:42 pm
(19) Cheryl Huerta says:

Wow someone around here actually realizes where the U.S. cars are made these days. Good on ya Ian. Thanks for a reality check! My husband is an autobody technician and he could tell you that except for Toyota all of the repair parts he receives in the body shop for GM, Ford and Dodge are shipped from other countries. Face it folks we are a part of the world and I say it’s the best thing to happen since sliced bread!

Also Sharon C…Yes other countries have their race series and a majority of those race series hold races here in the U.S.

Thank goodness the separationaists are much fewer than those who are intelligent and open minded enough to realize that WE are ALL in this together no matter what country we are born in or live in. I had forgotten just how much blind fear of those who are different than us still exists in this country…the country that was literally founded on being a place where anyone from anywhere can come (as long as it’s legally of course) and make a decent life for themselves. Think about this…if we wnet all the way back to the original citizens of this country and decided to send all of the so-called foriegners home…all of us would be sent packing!

Just what is it that so many are so afraid of anyhow? Finding out that being different is a good thing?

The mind is like a parachute…it is not fully functional unless it is OPEN!

April 17, 2008 at 6:47 pm
(20) Cheryl Huerta says:

BRAVO Jeff. You said, “In conclusion as I stated before, no matter where NASCAR goes it will always be viewed as an American sport, just as F1 will always be European/Asian, and soccer (or as they say football) will remain a world sport.”

Very well said. We have nothing to fear but fear itself…

Does NASCAR belong in Mexico? I don’t know, does Japenese cars belong in NASCAR?

April 18, 2008 at 6:27 am
(23) Bruce says:

I will not watch this race,we have no business in Mexico….We don’t need the mexican market..WE need fences on the border..and we need to send home millions of illegal mexicans.

April 18, 2008 at 9:58 am
(24) Scott says:

I am with Bruce, I think they should go there and STAY THERE! As soon as NASCAR crosses the border we should errect the fence very quickly and be done with both or them. About the illegals already here. Let the Fans that have nothing to do on the weekends now hunt them done and deport them.

April 18, 2008 at 10:59 am
(25) Sammi Adkins says:

Leave NASCAR where it started!! It would be nice to go to an event that was truly “Made in the USA” and would stay that way!

April 18, 2008 at 12:17 pm
(26) mat says:

If mexico wants stock car racing then let them build their own version! ours is not for sale. If NASCAR keeps stunts like this up I think on sundays a lot of long time fans won’t be watching… I know I won’t be.

April 18, 2008 at 1:23 pm
(27) Tim L says:

I think it’s great that NASCAR is expanding their horizons and competing in other countries. I really see no problem with the US racing in Mexico or in Canada.

For those of you that complain about NASCAR leaving the US and how NASCAR should stay in America, check out the tags on your NASCAR hats and shirts. I can almost guarantee you’ll see MADE IN CHINA (or Honduras, Haiti) printed on it. Why don’t you folks wake up and smell what you’re stepping in? AMERICA OUTSOURCES EVERYTHING!

April 18, 2008 at 2:38 pm
(28) jason says:

Why not send NASCAR to Mexico, that’s where everything else is going. Maybe they should require the drivers to learn the language too, so they won’t offend anybody.

April 18, 2008 at 5:06 pm
(29) Larry says:

I seems Cheryl can show her green card and get in free. Yes you are correct in some of your statements about the southern states and NASCAR early years, and as well as today. Then when you look at are economic condition today, NAFTA has taken a large toll on this, and the attendance as well due to the jobs going to Mexico.
Therefore Americans ( not citizens by adoptions or other means of entry) are very much against the sport of racing going across the border to run a so called fancy road course. We have tracks to support this event here in the states and a red neck or not I do not agree with the decision of Brian France to take the race south of the border.

April 18, 2008 at 8:34 pm
(31) BadBob says:

Nascar is making money or they wouldn’t be there. Nascar can’t fill the seats here, so let the peso fill the seats. If the drivers like it and the sponsors don’t have a problem with it, so be it.

I attended the texas race this spring, and every where I looked their were empty seats. A lot of empty seats. I cant help but wonder whether these seats are empty because of gas prices or Nascars constunt efort to make nascar better. I personally thought the racing was better before restrictor plates and Mexico. JUST MY OPOINION.

(35) dan says:

yes i think nascar should go back to basics. we dont need mexico, they need us. toyata should never been allowed, and racing was way better e few years ago. and yes im tired of the drivers not being able to speak their minds. quit trying to be politcally correct, and get back to good old american racing. back when trading paint was racing.

I don’t think Nascar is as charitable as some of you might think. If there losing money in Mexico it’s for a reason. They are obviously looking at the big picture, which is the almighty bottom line.
