2007 NEXTEL Cup Banquet In The Books
Jimmie Johnson was crowned the Champion for the second year in-a-row. He picked up a point fund payout of $7,317,499. This brings his total 2007 NEXTEL Cup winnings to $15,313,920.
The banquet wasn't actually that bad this year. The show kicked off with comedian David Spade who bombed pretty badly. But when they got into the meat of the banquet I liked the video theme where each driver highlighted their wife's involvement in their careers.
NASCAR fans are blessed with one of the shortest offseasons in all of sports. As of December 1st the 2008 Daytona 500 is just 78 days away.

Well it sounded like it all went well…Would have been nice to see it..I guess it really isn’t very important anymore..Espn Classic?…Whats up with that…So all the racing will be on some stupid channel that no one gets..It was fun while it lasted.
Will the 2007 awards banquet be on TV again. It was missed by a lot of folks because of the ten o’clock showing on the west coast.
Please tell me of any re-run date.
Thanks
What a poor choice in David Spade…he was not funny at all…how about Larry the Cable Guy or Jeff Foxworthy, they at least know something about Nascar. The program was better than last year. I also know alot of people who do not get ESPN Classic…poor choice of networks…I can’t stand ESPN and their coverage of Nascar…the Three Stooges they have in the booth need to go.
I Totally Agree with Linda. What a poor choice in David Spade…he was not funny at all…HE absolutely stunk! how about Larry the Cable Guy or Jeff Foxworthy, they at least know something about Nascar. The program was better than last year. I also know alot of people who do not get ESPN Classic…poor choice of networks…I can’t stand ESPN and their coverage of Nascar…the Three Stooges they have in the booth need to go.I seen soooo many people say this about wallace and gang I cant beleive they dont do something about it
Now people think. ESPN classic, David Spade, Cot, Clean Air & Dirst Air Wonder Guy, Cookie cutter drivers, and tracks. Do I need to say any more?
Jean Larson, if you missed it, you just about seen it all then. David Spade was on still have not figure it out why, Nascar pat themselves on the back alot, and thats it.

Yes U do as I dont understand one thing you are trying to say
No one has mentioned the female voice who introduced the drivers with such a different approach. Whatever the idea for such odd inflections I thought it sounded terrible. Does anyone know who it was?
walter schultz WHEW! went right over your head uh? Think what people have been saying on here for months, What nascar have been doing in changes for the last couple of years.
David Spade was awful. Not one thing he said was funny. NASCAR spends a lot of time praising themselves. The show was better than last year but not by much. The show needs a complete over haul.
I think they should broadcast the banquet that honors all the guys who make the drivers do well.
the pit crew winners, the car maker who wins, like Chevy, the Car owner winner.
At least we would see the real backbone of Nascar like we used to.
The one thing that makes sense on the number 5 entry here is the name: ??????
Walter Schultz, I too read the comment and have no idea what it is attempting to say. Dirst air? (went right over my head as well) I think Cot is meant to be COT, Car of Tomorrow. Beyond that his reply, #9, makes little sense. ?????
How about just doing away with ny, ny and going to vagaus where they have a track and
know how to put on a good show and do it
right! I’am old school lets do away with the “cot’s” cars
and go back to the day when they got their
cars off of the show room floor. It can be
done and probably for a lot less money!
If ABC wants Nascar they should broadcast all the events on local channels for all to view…I wish FOX had the entire season, we love those guys, they’re the best!
Mary is right about ABC & ESPN that was the worse broadcasting I have ever seen & heard. And Nascar isnt doing any better. If I hear the words, Perfect, Great, or Exactly right or see that dumbass fake dirty or clean air I will shut the TV off. I world like to know how many of us fans really like THE CHASE ? I live in Indiana and friends , people I have talked to at a couple of tracks have said dont like the chase. Go back to the 90’s. Dont want to watch a bunch of IROC races. Have rules NASCAR but let crew chiefs be innovative. Nascar you say Daytona is your world series, so why is it not in the chase ? No road course why ? Also need Bristol. Wise up Nascar you are about to screw up a great sport.
you dumb rednecks who want cable guy or foxworthy thats whats wrong with nascar to many rednecks running the show should have been Rickey Bobby
OK, OK, I see there are two people on here having a hard time understand something unless someone paint a picture for them. Maybe that is why there is pictures in books. What I meant is. First you have to understand the topic, plus what people have been saying on here for the last several months about nascar, HOW nascar have been changing, I.E. going to the cot (yes cot means Car of tomorrow-geez), all the tracks, and drivers are cookie cutters, Dirty air / clean air thing that rusty does on TV. Oh yes I did had a typo with the word dirty with dirst. (Another picture), now NASCAR using David Spade for entertainment. Last but not least nascar decided to use ESPN classic to show their banquet, an channel that not everyone can get. Just more of poor decisions that nascar have been doing for the past several years. Does this paint a better picture for you, walter, norm?
sy, too many rednecks running the show at nascar? Hey clueless, Nascar came from the rednecks, what is wrong with nascar now is, nascar changing itself for the people from up north, one reason they have the chase crap, because some of them didn’t understand the point system. Foxworthy, and the cable guy sure is a lot funnier than you Spade person. You should be careful who you call dumb, We down here know Ricky Bobby is not a REAL person just a fictional character person from a movie.
I agree with the comments about David Spade. He is funny, in a different setting. This setting was totally wrong for a NASCAR banquet. That portion of the program was suppose to be “entertainment”. It was obvious that David Spade was uncomfortable as well as everyone in the audience. Heck, I felt uncomfortable sitting at home watching that train wreck!
Although you may feel someone like Larry the Cable Guy, Jeff Foxworthy, or Bill Ingval may portray a “redneck” image, those guys are funny and it is someone the majority of the audience would relate to and find funny. They are also someone that knows NASCAR. If the audience and the performer can relate, then you have the right combination.
That was NASCAR’s attempt to make the sport something it is not, and Nascar failed again. Remember last year? Cannot remember the guys name but again, it was terrible. Nascar is so afraid of portraying a “redneck” image that they go to far into the other ditch. I knew the minute they introduced David Spade it would be a crash and burn. It was.
As for airing it on ESPN Classic, it should be part of the contract with either Fox or ABC that they rotate the coverage of the banquet alternating years.
Paul it is not a “north vs south” deal. It is an attempt at making the sport something it is not.
Again, Nasar failed miserably.
Why have the banquet in NY?Atlanta,Charlotte, would be better.
David Spade is a jerk.Get someone that knows NASCAR.NASCAR started in the south and needs to stay with its roots.I drove when it was grand national..
I agree, if ABC wants Nascar, they should do it right or leave it alone. Th show was better than last year, but Spade was horrible. I liked it when M Waltrip had preshow and introduced drivers as they entered, and I felt like I was there.
Switch TV coverage to public access channel in Dubuque. Then, only a few thousand will have an opportunity to watch.
Rusty wallace needs to stick to racing a car or go on vacation because he is terrible at comentating we need a new funny, want to be listened to threesome up there that knows what to say and don’t bore you to death during the race. I hope nascar finds the right people next year. I’m happy for Jimmy and the gang and hats off to the Gordon club!!!!!!
complain, complain, complain, does anyone see any joy in life today. It is a sport run by higher ups, that want more more more. They really dont care about the avid nascar fans, if they did they would listen. It is all about how much money they can make…THANK GOD FOR THE TEAMS AND THE DRIVERS AND OWNERS THAT ENTERTAIN US FOR THE SEASON. Here is a thought, maybe, they should have had Cletus instead of David Spade.
??????? maybe painted pictures alone would work better for you because the typo laced words you try to pass for English just aren’t adequate enough to make your thoughts successfully understood.
To answer your question I think you should use something other than finger painting for your “pictures” because NO it does not paint a better picture.
Who cares? A bogus ceremony watched by few to cap yet another God-awful season of racing. Conrgats to JJ for being the best driver for the last 5 races of a 34 race season.
norm now show me only if you can where is my typo words other the one I pointed out. If you still could not understand the comment then maybe you need to stop reading your comic books.
Well I have to admit the first time I read ???? #5 comments’ I had no idea what this person was trying to say. Then I stop and think for a split second of what the topic was and what others comments had been written on here then it was pretty easy. I actually felt pretty silly of not picking it up sooner. All it took was to read and do some thinking, and this person did say Think people.
I also would like to know where are all typos are you talking about NORM that this person “????” supposedly had done? This person did admit to their mistake for the Dirst word; Then again, it did not take any thinking capacity what word this person was trying to type. I do remember you or the other person wrote along with the dirst word typo about COT. COT is no typo my friend, EVERYONE knows what COT is, just as they know what cookie cutter drivers, and tracks are.
Here is some advise ???? maybe you should not make anymore those kind of comments, because some people don’t or can’t use their thinking skills, everything has to be spelled out for them, what a shame for loosing those kind of skills.
OK ??????? ALL THE CAPITALIZED WORDS ARE CORRECTIONS TO ONES YOU USED WRONG…
I see there are two people on here having a hard time understand (UNDERSTANDING) something unless someone paint(PAINTS) picture for them. Maybe that is why there is (ARE) pictures in books. What I meant is.
Hey Kevin I read what YOU wrote and I sure see what you mean in your last paragraph. Perfect example of “don’t or can’t use thinking skills”. Thanks for the advise(?) OH advice…. Finally even you used COT in caps not Cot as ????? did.
Norm, are you trying to tell all of us of whom that read the site that you could not figure out what COT was UNLESS it was in capital letters? It certainly does look like “?????” have proven his/her point.
Norm, that advice that I wrote to “????” was for people like you. Norm, before you come on here and play schoolteacher, maybe you should use a writing program for your comments that way before you make a fool of yourself about criticizing others for not using all capital letters on COT, and few others small things, you would have known that your comments have numerous flaws in them also. After saying that, and in danger of committing the same foolish thing as you Norm, if you had used a writing program along with the flaws that I previously mentioned above you would also have seen your comments have been running 4.8 and 2.8 grade level.
Norm, here is some advice that is really is for you, if you have to have all capital letters in COT, or if you have a hard time in reading something that someone may misspelled a word or a typo in order to read a comment, then you need stop coming on here. Everyone that comes on here has typos, have misspelled words, do not always use all capital letters if they use them at all, or they use all capital letters in their comments.
Yes, I do use a writing program sometimes Norm, But I have to say this when I do not use it my writings are still in the high school grade level that is way above yours had been running.
Either stop playing want to be schoolteacher or at least write at a grade level that equals too or better yet above the one that you are criticizing about.
Oh by the way Norm, If you want to play childish games, and we know you have a problem reading words unless they are spelled correctly, or used capital letters, go back to the third grade after all that was your average grade level in your comments. After saying that (or in your case Norm, writing/typing) I am done with this person I have better things to do than messing around with a person that don’t understand anything unless it is s-p-e-l-l-e-d out for him in detail.
If I didnt no any better I would swear norm was my EX husband he wasn’t all there either. He liked to point at all the faults in people while he was doing the same thing but worse most of the time. He loved to complain about others driving abilities while he has received numerous traffic citations for red lights and speeding. On top of that the body shop has a spot reserved for him. Hey to the other persons on here dont take norm to seriously, he is like a penny on the ground, there are every where and no one pays attention to them because they aren’t worth the time.
Patty is’nt funny all Ex’s sound the same. My ex couldnt do no wrong either but sure pointed them out though.
Kevin you are right. My apologies to you and to ????? for being a jerk and being an unwanted critic… Thank you for taking all the time you don’t have to point out my childish ways.
Howie Mandel was supposed to be the comedian that night, but there was never a signed contract, so David Spade was the filler. He literally sucked that night. Was not funny at all. You could see the body language on the drivers in the audience that they thought the same thing, VERY LAME. LOL
WOW! There certainly are A LOT of posters here that have no clue how to construct a sentence, much less spell correctly. Further, I AM NOT A REDNECK but I do enjoy Jeff Foxworthy and I think he would be great for the awards banquet.
WELL The Big Nascar Sprint SUCK!!!! Has Begun
I am watching ARCA…..
Merry Christmas All
Now that everyone is happy, cot should have been c.o.t. this would be the cirect way to present it. Now back to what everyone was talking about. Nascar is been sucking since Big E died. Hope I don’t have to spell this out or be spell checked? They are going for the money of the white collar. Us red necks don’t have enough for them. Nascar has gotten to big for their britches. And to put the banquet on espn classic was the worst thing they could do. I to never seen it. And after all you guys and gals, I never missed anything. So have fun picking me apart! One hick boy in West Virginia.
Well I see things have not changed on here. I stop reading these site months ago for the very reason that I see that still goes on here. People cannot make a comment with out others come on here (To borrow a couple of words from some one else on here) too play SCHOOLTEACHER! Instead, all of you come on here to read and share your opinions about NASCAR and/or what Steve has for the topic. Lot of you are too busy worrying about others CONSTRUCTED sentences, or not having CAPS, or TYPOS, GRADE level, and MISSPELLED words.
What is amusing, EVERYONE that has made a comment on this site has something wrong in his or her comment. Even the newest individual that made a comment about the lack of constructed sentences that include my comment too. Yours too Darrell you have misspelled words, I said that so you would not felt left out “LOL.”
You don’t like it and it bothers you on the way people writes then don’t read them, and you need to stay away from other sites like this one, newspapers guestbook’s, etc. that people can write comments in them.
If you like sites like this then keep your criticizing to yourself because there is a very very good chance you made just as many mistakes too.
I’m going back and do other things instead of reading this site, I will come back in a few months, and maybe the schoolteachers had left by then. Then this site be more enjoyable for everyone.
Kevin thank you but It was not a right or wrong thing it is just common sense. It is just some people seem to have knack of not using it very often like # 41 ????, norm, kevin, paty, liz , starsrule & darrel just demonstrated. Oh well some just have to attempt to cause trouble with others in order to have their life fulfilled. I came back on because I knew someone would write something like this, unfortunate I was right.
I see this message board is just as bad as any others I have visited. Everyone spends so much time correcting all the mistakes they find and spend no time on the topic at hand. So since we’re not talking about the topic, I will add my two cents…the pennies that everyone else passed up…I picked them up.
My apologies in advance Kevin, but for someone who doesn’t have time to deal with elementary level writers, you’re still spending a lot of time responding. For some one who insists others grow up, try being the bigger person and walk away. Also can I have the name of your high school? I don’t want to send my children there, your grammar is not at a high school level.
Way to jump on the band wagon Gary! Again, for everyone who is pathetic for all of their corrections, you showed them!
Since I’m on a roll here, it’s correct not cirect.
Liz & Patty, did you point out your husband’s faults too? Maybe that’s why they’re exes.
To the rest of you who focused on the issue, you get a gold star. It’s the holidays people! Let’s spend less time pointing out each other’s mistakes, and focus on what is really important.
Kudos to you “Just As Bad”. How refreshing to read a comment written by someone who knows how to use the English language. Not only can you write but can discern the idiocy in other posts. I agree we need to stay on the topic, thanks for your incisive reminder.
Just as bad,
Yes, Just as bad you are absolutely correct I have spend a lot of time on this site during this week, and I did not walk away from Norm as I should have, and that is one hazard of getting my shopping, decorating done so quickly, and I should not have taken a vacation week this time of the year.
As I had mentioned to Norm during our friendly discussions my writing is not the best, nor did I ever claim it to be and I do use a writing program at times that we have at my work place. What I was trying to point out to Norm, (and I was a poor example of it), a person should be careful of criticizing others comments when they make just as many.
For the fun of it (yes from boredom) during this week when I have read comments about criticizing others grammar, misspelled words, typos and such, I copy and paste those comments on to my writing program (yes I admit playing schoolteacher) and see what kind of mistakes they have. I even did this with yours “Just as bad” according to the program your comment was in the elementary school level.
Do I really care “Just as bad” if a person makes a typo, or have misspelled words or use some improper grammar while expressing their opinions about the topic on this informal web site?
I could care less about typos, misspelled words, etc. because we all make mistakes and a person don’t have to look very hard to find them everyday, anywhere from the this web site, to newspapers, and even college books. The trick is you have to be smart enough to understand what has being written and the majority of the time it is not that hard.
Just as bad, you made a point to come on here to criticize about the criticizing. You also criticize a person that came on here to show us how foolish we all have been, and you even made comments about two women and their exes, that you have no idea what went on in their marriages.
What is funny about your comment just as bad not once you criticize the person that criticize others comments in the first place. You only criticize the people that want to see the people that play schoolteacher on here to stop it. Yes, we do know what is important to you, and it is not the topic on hand, you must enjoy reading others criticizing others about typos.
Yes, this is long – way too long, I just wanted for you and Norm to pick and choose from it. I know everything else has gone over yours heads.
Merry Christmas Norm and Just as bad
Kevin-
My criticism on criticism was all in the spirit of the other posts. The one thing I have noticed in this discussion is everyone is hyper-sensitive in responding. I guess we all, myself included, feel it necessary to “defend” ourselves. Though I really don’t care that much how you feel in regards to me, as I am sure the feeling is 100% mutual. However, I cannot go with out a little response to your 8 paragraph rebuttal.
I think that it is great you have a program that assists you in playing school teacher. The phrase “we learn something new everyday” holds true when we learn how elementary our writing is when compared with others. I guess I should go back to college so that I can beat the grading curve of your writing program. The bottom line is a typo here and there is not a big deal. But when people take the time to insult other’s stupidity with bad grammar and spelling, it’s the pot calling the kettle black. Wouldn’t you agree?
I did make a comment to the ladies about their exes, and you are right. I do not know about their marriages, so perhaps that was out of line. (Ladies, if I offended you, I do apologize.) However, everyone felt it necessary to jump on Norm. You don’t know anything about him or his life, so in the spirit of possibly hurting another’s feelings…well again maybe we should take are own advice. And to imply everything else has gone over my head? I guess I have an elementary brain, to go with my elementary writing.
But I do appreciate all the advice and knowledge you have shared with me Kevin. I feel though my day is more complete now that I have let you into it.
Thank you for the holiday salutations! Happy Holidays to you as well!
Kevin your holiday wish to “just as bad” and to me seems to insinuate we are the same person. Just so you know we are not nor did I put anyone up to post a response on my behalf. It did get me to thinking perhaps you are ????? because once you started posting ????? was not heard from again. If you look at post #9, when ????? made what I felt was a rather disparaging remark to Walter about not being able to understand ?????’s post (WHEW, went right over your head uh?) I agreed in a post that it wasn’t easy to understand. I will admit it was childish to even get involved but I did. If you read his remarks about “painting pictures” it is clear ????? wanted to continue this exchange by being demeaning. He/she/you offered a me challenge to point out other typos and I did. This was not an attempt to be a school teacher as you allege, it was accepting a challenge. (Again, I should have left it alone)
I tried to end my participation in this negative thread with an apology but somehow it seems to continue. Others enjoyed getting involved with remarks like “ignore pennies on the ground as they aren’t worth the time” and comparisons to ex-husbands. I’m sure you understand my desire to respond in kind but I have left those remarks alone as well.
I have heard it said that if we accept mediocrity we are destined to endure it. That thought comes to mind when people say “that’s just the way I am” and/or “you have to think about what I write and then you will understand”. The trick isn’t to be smart enough to understand what is written the trick is to think when you write, instead, and not put the burden of figuring out the meaning on the reader. Why don’t take a little pride in their effort instead of being so apathetic? That acceptance of one’s own mediocre abilities is bothersome. For those who have programs that correct grammar and spelling mistakes my question is “why not use it?”
In closing let me wish you happy holidays. How great it is that you finished your shopping and decorating early
Correction to the fifth to last sentence in prior post:
Why don’t people take a little pride in their effort instead of being so apathetic?
If Smoke hadn’t looked so good in that great black tuxedo the banquet would have been a complete waste. Kelly Clarkson had done a lot better, and let’s just say Spade dig a hole. Also, some very visible women (and men) should have dressed A LOT BETTER!!!
I agree it was a better show than last year! But, being a bit hard of hearing I couldnt understand that girl that announced the drivers.. is it just me? And how about some country music next year!!!!! ENUF with the rock stuff and Jewel, did anybody understand Clarkson? You could have had Underwood and Pickler and had some better music!! I still like the show tho, had to record it since it was on at midnite in our area and then skip thru commercials and all the sponsors names!!! The guys were funny this year, and I missed Jr. sheryl48
All the talk about the way NASCAR is doing things these days but the girl announcer has got no press. Who was she and did she audition for this gig? I thought her delivery was terrible. Jimmiesgirl, any idea who she was? Her voice sounded like Susie Kolber but not her inflections.
