Jimmie Johnson Takes Commanding Chase Lead With Phoenix Win

Sunday November 11, 2007
Jimmie Johnson scored his fourth consecutive NEXTEL Cup victory today in Phoenix. Johnson ran near the front throughout the 2007 Checker Auto Parts 500 and turned up the heat when it mattered most to take another 2007 Chase victory.

Jimmie Johnson now holds an 86 point lead over Jeff Gordon as the series heads to Homestead for the final race of the season. Johnson needs only to finish 18th or better in Homestead to guarantee his second consecutive NEXTEL Cup Championship.

As Jeff Gordon said during his post-race interview. "It's over."

Jeff said it best in the post race. “ITS OVER”!!! HMS fans congrats An HMS will definitely win another. JJ fans he needs to finish ONLY 18th. to win. Jeff fans I think Jeff will win next week. History shows that when a driver needs to finish a certain position to win the cup. That driver has always finished AT or NEAR that position, never much better though. I feel JJ will finish around 16th. but that will still be a CHAMPIONSHIP for him. Either Jeff OR a NON-CHASER will win the race next week. But that is a guess.

HISTORY HAS TAUGHT US THAT WE HAVE LEARNED NOTHING FROM HISTORY***

I quit watching this crap a couple of weeks ago. Nascar is too inconsisent. My viewing time now belongs to the NFL and PBR

(3) 9 fan says:

smoke62 I couldnt agree more. I have not watched a race since we was live at BRICKYARD. Ive been RVing, now that the RV is winterized, Ive been working with my son on his 94 Firebird. (plans to be a street legal 9 second car by race year 09.) Today we went shopping to help the big ol FAT MAN who will visit late Dec. Got back just in time to catch the last 90 laps. I hated it, but was better than WALMART hee hee

(4) 1969rs says:

Smoke62 and 9 fan, I hear ya. Once NFL starts, I will occasionally flick back to see what is going on, but I prefer to watch the Packers on Sunday.
NASCAR will never pay attention to our feedback and realize that they are spinning into a black hole and loosing viewers. But, it could be worse. Could be open wheel and we could have our drivers defecting to stock cars. Can you believe that? Thanks Tony George for screwing things up years ago.

(5) TLabonte Fan says:

Just to throw in the opposing view, I have not watched the NFL for a decade or better. It’s not football. Football is played on Saturday’s. That crap on Sundays is well……CRAP! I did like the political/quasi-religious statemment they made with the candles and turning the lights out on a game at halftime. What a joke!

NASCAR aint what it used to be, but it’s not totally down the toilet. I wish they would listen to some of these guys because I would hate for NASCAR to NFL itself!

(6) 1969rs says:

I know this is a NASCAR site, and we should be talking about JJ winning again, (sorry Steve, that is boring)…if “real” football is played on Saturday, why is it that so many football players that go from college to NFL comment how much faster the game is played in the NFL? Why is it that so many College players that were stars in College, turn out to be a bust in the NFL? Less than 5% of the college stars turn out to be top form players in the NFL.
I guess College / NFL could produce all simular players with the same look, same response when interviewed, same uniforms, oh, that’s right, we already have that sport….NASCAR.

Go JIMMY Go!!!!!! you guys don’t like it because Jeff and Jimmy keep on winning. Good luck to Jeff and Jimmy you both are the best!!!!

November 12, 2007 at 11:34 am
(8) Kevin says:

Chris we don’t like it because Jeff and Jimmie keep on winning? Besides that is a dumb comment that you made – you need too stop and understand what NASCAR once was and should be before they made all the changes for people like you that don’t understand the once sport. I started to like Jeff back when he first started in NASCAR but the reality of it is they are and the rest of the 99% drivers are cookie cutters. I would love to see them race the old drivers back in the day, and the way they use to drive, back before the YOU cannot touch me on the track. In the day, if you are in the way they will move you out of the way.

The ONLY reason they are winning because they have the high dollar sponsorship to get the best of everything. Just like petty did in his day. Put jj or Jeff in another team car they would not even get out of their own way.

Now Chris go back to school before you make another dumb comment.

(9) TLabonte Fan says:

1969rs,

Thanks for making my point. The more that I can distance NCAA football from that joke of sport that is played on Sunday, the better. If you want a sport that everything is exactly the same look no further than the NFL. They could all change uniforms at halftime and we would be none the wiser.

But you are correct, this is a NASCAR site. I also apologize Steve.

Jimmy’s got this one wrapped up!

Some people should not watch football or car racing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

November 12, 2007 at 11:57 am
(11) Bob says:

Well with the cup drivers driving both the cup and the little league (bush or whatever it is now) it is the very same as football. Which is which? Same driver differant color of car. So in a way when you put in the stupid changes nascar had done and cup drivers drive in both leagues, nascar is nothing more another NFL. At least the nfl don’t let the players play for two teams at the same time, for that matter the base ball league don’t let the majors players play both major or minors league at the same time. Baseball if you are not good enough or need more training you get sent back to the minors.

Nascar really loves their precious Hendrick Team.

November 12, 2007 at 12:42 pm

what you think about Earnhardt joining the team? Between Johnson,Gordon and Earnhardt, I believe they will dominatate the track.
GO Jimmie

I miss the good old boys.Thats what made it fun.

November 12, 2007 at 1:01 pm
(17) jr fan from bama says:

I believe alot of people feel the same about nascar. The more they have tried to equal out the competition, the more it has backfired. Not to take anything away from Jimmy or Jeff, but like Kevin said–they have more money to do more therefore they have the advantage which is why Jimmy has won 10 races and Jeff 6. This makes you happy if you a J or J fan, but like the rest of us who have watched the sport for 20 + years–its nothing short of boring–let them race them like they used to and get rid of the “cookie cutters”. If they don’t it will continue to lose popularity.

November 12, 2007 at 2:15 pm
(18) DaLonna says:

I have to agree with you Chris, people are just mad cause Hendrick is kickin butt this year, best part is…wait till next year, with Junior in the 88 car, Hendricks will dominate, GO JIMMIE!!!!

November 12, 2007 at 2:18 pm
(19) Dave says:

Nascar will arrange for a Hendrick car to win the final race. Why should anyone expect anything different? After all, that is the way it has been all year. If a driver from another team speaks out about the way Nascar manipulates races, he will be severely reprimanded and fined.

November 12, 2007 at 2:28 pm
(20) 1969RS says:

Hey Chris, it is not because Jeff and Jimmy are winning. It is what many have said. The sport has become just simply boring. NASCAR has such a stranglehold on the drivers and teams, no one wants to step out of line in fear of having to go to the “Oval Office”.

TLabontefan, just so I understand, are you saying all NFL players are the same? Maybe you need to turn on a game on Sunday and see for yourself. Is Brett Favre like Chad Pennington. Is Donovan McNabb like Phillip Rivers? Is Reggie Bush like Adrian Peterson?
Are the New England Patroits like St. Louis Rams ot Miami Dolphins? It is all about the W, not about some horse crap BSC (or should that be BS) ranking. Until college institutes a playoff system, the college football system, although fun to watch, does not hold a bunch of credibility.
If the Heisman Trophy is for college’s best player, why aren’t more Heisman winners MVP’s in the NFL?

Dave, I read your comments on the other topics for the past week or so, and I am going to repeat my comment that I wrote to you on here as I did the last topic. I will try to make it as s-i-m-p-l-e as I can for you

Some people even make Gump look like a genius. Before you say it who cares what team I like. At least I know what I’m talking about before I make a comment on here. Dave before you make a fool of yourself again on here, and the other topics on this site. Crack open a book learn how to read and understand, then write on here. Up until now you have no idea what you are talking about.

(22) Earl says:

Why should Nascar even bother to have a 2008 season? They should just give the championship to one of the Hendrick teams by default. Everyone knows Nascar will rig the races as they have for 2007.

(26) RARE AIR says:

I have been watching the Chase but Im just tired of as guy who dominated the field and has a husge lead over his nearest competitor get beaten cause the last 10 races a guy finally starts to drive. This would have been Jeffs 6th championship had they left well enough alone. Now we got a guy who is checker or wrecker headed to winning his 2nd title thanks to the new format… I miss Dale caus this crap would have never happened if he was still around…
