It's Official: Gibbs To Toyota in 2008

Wednesday September 5, 2007
Joe Gibbs Racing held it's much anticipated press conference today to announce that the team would be switching to Toyota starting in 2008. This change will put Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch in Toyota Camrys next year.

Toyota has struggled so far in NEXTEL Cup. This is partly because they did not have any top level teams fielding the Camry. The addition of Joe Gibbs Racing immediately changes their outlook for 2008. Wins are almost certain to come and a Championship is no longer out of the question. What will the NASCAR faithful do when (eventually) a Toyota wins the Sprint Cup?

(1) Pat says:

best kept secret in the world,,,let us now see where Tony Stewart ends up with after his contract with Gibbs ends.

Thank you Kyle Bush for letting us know, you are one of the most hated person’s in Nascar, followed by your brother with Montoya running right up there with you.

BOO – - – - JGR—-makes me want to throw RICE at him…..Joe Gibbs, I also hope the Redskins have a horrendous season.

(2) john says:

I heard that Uncle Ben going to supply fuel for them also. Wonder it’s going to be Minute rice or Long rice?

September 5, 2007 at 1:12 pm
(3) Daisy Duke says:

In the words of my brother Bubba, who quit nascar earlier this season “TO BE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST” Let the games begin!!!!!!

September 5, 2007 at 1:26 pm
(4) Mick20 says:

Daisy Duke you are correct!! Being a Indiana boy & a Tony fan I will still pull for him. As I said before Tony can race & win driving anything!!! This day was going to come, it was just a matter of time before all that Toyota money clouded someones vission. I-m one of those guy’s who watch garden tractor races so, I say again; GO TONY GO!!!

September 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm
(5) Nash Vegas says:

Enough with the rice jokes. . . go out and look at your! If you’re driving something newer than a 1975, it’s got foreign parts all through it.
Let me make this real simple for the simpletons. . .
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN AMERICAN CAR – CARS ARE BUILT HERE (TOYO & HONDA TOO!) THERE AMERICAN MADE CARS BUT NO AMERICAN CARS WITH ALL AMERICAN PARTS!

September 5, 2007 at 2:01 pm
(6) Fred says:

Toyota says they buid them here. That may be true, but the yuse parts from Japan and the money goes back to Japan.

I’ll still pull for Tony but I’ll buy a German car before I buy a Japan made car and H-ll needs to freeze over before I buy a german car.

September 5, 2007 at 2:11 pm
(7) Mick20 says:

Hey guys, this is America the home of the brave and the land of the free! WE let them come over here and build their cars so WE could make money working for them!!! If WE had said hell no you arn’t welcome, they wouldn’t be here. It’s that simple! Quit crying & enloy the race!

September 5, 2007 at 3:02 pm
(8) An Opinion says:

nash toyo, honda are put together here.

September 5, 2007 at 3:15 pm
(9) Tonygirl says:

If it’s orange and has wheels, not only can he drive it, he can win with it too. I don’t care what he drives, I root for the driver not the car.

September 5, 2007 at 3:17 pm
(10) GoMarkGo says:

At least the Toyota cars are based from Japan, not China. The cars could have lead-based paint. Now that the gas is unleaded, fans have clearer heads from the fumes and are realizing the cost they have just incurred. Seeing a race live is an event, but one that I can enjoy with comforts at home. You must at least experience a live race once, so save your monies for a year or two if needed, and go. All sports are going to cost you. Try Pro football. Same prices, same traffic hassles, prices of food and drinks, etc. If I can afford either, I will go if available. But I won’t go out of my way for either anymore. By the way, for those complaining about Bristol on other posts, QUIT!!! The drivers didn’t, they like it.

September 5, 2007 at 3:28 pm
(11) Stewart says:

I place my bet they will use Rice A Roni, sushi flavor.

American brand with mostly American made or owned parts is better than JAPAN put together puzzle cars in the usa made with All JAPAN made parts. Simpletons? A simpleton is when they buy a car that is put together in the USA with ALL japan made parts, and think it’s a American made car.

September 5, 2007 at 3:41 pm
(12) MURPHY says:

Hey everyone, all the cars next year will be cot (cars of trash) made here not japan. The only difference is the name tag on the front. All we can do is root for the driver and not the car brand.

September 5, 2007 at 3:47 pm
(13) Bob says:

GOMARKGO how do you know if all the drivers liked it? With the constant threat of a NASCAR fine hanging over their heads they all say they like it or else. Of course they didn’t quit, they have no choice, well they do but to keep a job, you understand.
On the Rice thing, my money goes on Beef flavor.

September 5, 2007 at 4:01 pm
(14) john says:

Murphy, My memory escapes me, concerning the cot crap, have they raced them on a super speedway yet? If not, how do they know how the brick will handle? Big speedways are different than the small ones on the way a car handles. Then again maybe they do know how they will handle, a brick going against the wind can’t go to fast.

September 5, 2007 at 4:46 pm
(15) MURPHY says:

John, nascar does not care how they handle, only that they have complete control over the cars, We will find out next year how they run.

September 5, 2007 at 4:47 pm
(16) bryan says:

Long Rice

September 5, 2007 at 4:51 pm
(17) john says:

They may have to shorten those 500 mile races either that or require the fans to bring sleeping bags. Slower the cars longer the race. I still say minute rice.

September 5, 2007 at 5:31 pm
(18) JamesDarwin says:

Banzai Joe Gibbs Racing! Sayonara Michael Waltrip, you stiff. Rots of ruck to Tony, Denny, and Kyle racing in Toyota’s. Show these NASCAR monkeys that change is good.

September 5, 2007 at 6:33 pm
(19) ANT408 says:

I really dont even know why they brought these damn jap cars into a supposed to be ALL AMERICAN REDNECK sport and get that beaner juan paco montoya out also KEEP IT AMERICAN get rid of the forieners and the toyotas the hell out of our sport whats next they gonna bring in honda tony denny and kyle and joe gibbs all of you are sellouts!!!!!! GO JR THATS RIGHT

September 5, 2007 at 6:54 pm
(20) Jeff says:

Whats the problem with toyota. My God they make excellent cars and GM and Ford, well they’re alright but a lot of their models have reliability issues. If you drive a Toyota, you will be driving that same car for decades. As for the NASCAR side of the deal, well it appears that Toyota is starting to improve competition amoung the brands.

As for you ANT408, the things you said make me think your a racist. Montoya is an awsome driver and if you think differently, I’m pretty sure those 7 Formula 1 GP wins will change your mind. He has 7 more F1 wins than all the other NASCAR drivers. And bringing in Honda would be awesome.

Im just tired of all the bickering about how the Japaneese manufacturers dont belong in NASCAR. THEY BELONG, this is America right, as in everyone has an equal oppurtunity to promote their product (except AT&T, which I think is totally gay what NASCAR is doing to them). Ford was part of F1 for many years, unfortunatly they arent anymore meaning no American manufacturers in F1. But I hope that changes soon.

September 5, 2007 at 7:54 pm
(21) RickW20 says:

I am a Tony fan and like others I beleive he ca win in anything!
would I have switched to Toyota…NO
but like the rest of you I am not in Joe Gibbs’ position so I will just have to watch and see…….
and as for the American vs. non American argument…do you know how many Chevrolets are assembled in Mexico? and Canada?…Toyota has the money they can play the game DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!

September 5, 2007 at 8:06 pm
(22) get real says:

Jeff Well if you want to watch toyota and honda so much why don’t you and juan go back to F1, GP, IRL, Cart and/or what ever if you like it so much. That dumb example that you gave that juan have 7 more F1 wins than any nascar driver has. Well DUH, Then again how many nascar wins does jaun have? He has 1 busch win , then he got that when he knocked his own team mate out of the way, he’s very good at that knocking others out of the way. Maybe you need to read something other than toyota pubucations, then you will fine toyota has realiabilty problems too. Toyota dealorships around heer are very busy. The last toy I had I had to wait for 4 1/2 days before they would even see it. Call me racist if you want then again as you had said this is America (you brought it up for your own purpose only)and we suppose to have our own opinions, then again political correctness.
Again if you want to watch honda and toyota race watch your f1, cart, irl better hurry cart and irl on on the verg of disapearing. Less and less cars

September 5, 2007 at 8:22 pm
(23) ????? says:

Jeff are you being a racist? by saying Totally gay?

September 5, 2007 at 8:41 pm
(24) Go Figure says:

No car is reliable if you don’t fix it when something wears out or do prentative maint. Most toys, honda, and nissan owners do this while they let their american cars go, then complain about it. 9 out of 10 it is cheaper to fix/prentative maint the american car than the toys, honda, nissans. All CARS have their problems no matter what they are or who makes them. For 2007 VW, toys, nissans, fords, jeep leads the industry for recalls. 2006 gm was almost on top, now they are towards the bottom. go figure

Man, some of you Imperial Wizard guys need to lighten up on the starch. Put your sheets back in the linen closet, along with your robes, hoods, and rope. Stop drinking your own moonshine and save a couple of brain cells. Get off your sisters and add some branches to your family tree.

Good luck to the #20. Kick some ass in the Chase!

How can Tony, the only one that was left that would speak out against the mess Nascar has become run a Toyota.
This is the second funeral for Nascar
most of it died Feb. 2001

(27) jimmy vinson says:

Tony Stewart can race anything with wheels! The first time he doesnt qualify for a race whos fault will that be? Toyota has no business in nascar and Joe Gibbs is a sellout idiot!

Who cares where it’s made!! It’s a cars with four wheels and a big 20 on the sides and top.

September 6, 2007 at 4:24 am
(30) 9 fan says:

Here is a different point of view. (First let me say I regret buying a South Korean car. Hey now it carried a CHEVY name. AVEO. I didnt really know it was South Korean until after the fact. It has been a far superior product than the real Chevys&Fords Ive owned)

Anyway the problem with FORIEGN CARS is not quality. It is that we are buying them and driving our big 3 OUT.

Gibbs was left with no real choice folks. Chevy is cutting their racing funds drastically next year. As is FORD. These teams will all be TOYOTA soon unless the BIG 3 starts making money again.

Thats the problem.. And maybe the unions making them work 40 hours on vehicles that are not selling and just sitting in lots for years unsold.

(31) Tyler20 says:

Nascar is just getting better and better,This season is still has 11 races

As Long as it’s Orange…Stewart will drive the wheels off of it…..An oh by the way..Next time you drive your pontiac vibe..Open the Hood..Toyota Engine…GM and Toyota Share alot of Info.

(33) Nutzabout#9 says:

Good comments, 9 fan. The Tundras run super in the Craftsman series.
My Ford Explorer Sport Trac has been awesome. Got 111,700 miles on it and going strong. But, I’ve had Toyotas, too, and they’re great. Just way more expensive. I think “American Made” is an illusion nowadays.
#14, john — I think they’re going to race COTs at Talledega, if I’m not mistaken.

September 6, 2007 at 12:49 pm
(34) MARK says:

It does’nt matter as long as Jeffs in A Chevy

September 6, 2007 at 2:17 pm
(35) Just a Thought says:

If all the teams switch to Toyotas then nascar will be just like the rest of the racing leagues. I.E. IRL, CART, F1 and those road courses can’t think of the name of them, the ones you see with Mustangs, corvettes, porches, bmw’s and the rest, Nobody watches them it will be the same for nascar.

(38) jim says:

I have been a loyal Nascar fan for over 20 years. I have spent around 4 to 5 thousand dollars every year on tickets, shirts, travel etc. I saw my last Nascar race at California (only because I already bought the ticket). Call me racist if you want (I’m married to a Mexican) but Nascar is not the same with Toyota and drivers with names you can not pronounce. I trully miss the Nascar of yesteryear when it was an AMERICAN sport with AMERICAN values and tradition.
Good Luck Nascar, the only way you can hurt them is by not spending you AMERICAN dollars.

September 6, 2007 at 6:26 pm
(39) k9fan says:

LOL! I am just happy to see some Kasey Kahne fans here…especially after his BAD start this season! And yes, Smoke could probably win driving most any type of car. Heck, he’s a great dirt track driver as well as NASCAR.

September 6, 2007 at 6:38 pm
(40) Johnb says:

My only thought is ’so what’. Stock car racing is about competing in a car that is similiar to what the average person drives, and a hell of a lot of people in both the US and Canada drive Toyota.
I will even say the if you are one of them then you have no cause to complain about this latest news.

September 6, 2007 at 7:59 pm
(41) WALTRIP 55 says:

Its not sayonara to Waltrip racing.According to the head of development for Toyota, their imput, good and bad have been invaluable to Toyota, thats what the online posting said for Toyota.Head honcho also said that engine failures were their fault, they were built in house and shipped to some teams. As in the truck series, the teams all share info with each other.Gibbs,Germain Racing, and HOF Racing will add input also. AHHHHH TOYOTA,the Japanese jumping carp of auto racing. They were a cute nuisance when there were only a few,now they are bigger and multiplying rapidly and taking over. HEAR KITTY KITTY COME GET YOU SOME SUSHI

September 6, 2007 at 8:35 pm
(42) Bob from Stamford says:

Okay, let me preface this by saying I truly resent Toyota or any other foreign manufacturer afforded the opportunity and privelege of being involved in one of America’s national institutions. I also lived in Japan for 2 months, Korea for 4 months and what used to be West Germany for 3 years. Am I prejudiced? Hell yes! Having said all that, here are some observations:
1). With the exception of perhaps optics and possibly imaging chips for the on-board cameras, the cars most likely are 100% Made With Ablolute Pride In The USA! Where else would they be made? That would include the engines in the “Toyota” cars. I believe the only 8 cylinder motors Toyota makes is the little V8 in the Lexus and Tundra and the gawd-awful inline 8 they stick in the more gawd-awful Century. It looks like something right out of a out-of-sync soundtrack Godzilla movie. P.S.; Please don’t confuse the Toyota Century with the Buick Century. Although it was not the best legacy of Harley Earl, it is miles ahead of that Nippon P.o.S.
2). Toyota has not paid enough dues to be in Nascar. They think they can pay their dues in money, but we all know it paid in the blood, sweat and tears of those early racers who forged the way. They say they’ve been in the USA for 50 years and have sold millions of cars in that time. Funny, you don’t see any old Toyots around, unless you want to count the ultimate sissy-mobile FJ Cruiser. If they are so reliable and long lasting, where are they all? Consumer Reports, who have glorified the Asain auto industry for many years and seemed to find fault with most domestic offerings should do a report on 10, 15 and 20 year old models, if they can find one!
3). Toyota, and I assume Nissan and Honda all say they are “American” companies adding to the economy here. (I left out Mazda since Fords own a majority interest). Maybe, but at what expense to the auto worker who was counting on his/her retirement?
4). The Big 4 has supported the US military for generations and have stepped up to the plate on many occasions, including 2 World Wars. If you ever get the ear of a Japanese auto executive, ask him who they supported during World War II?
5). Toyota could give a rats ass if they actually win a race. There is no money in it for them. No trophy for the shelf. It’s the bragging rights they want. The Japanese are more reserved when it comes to coming out and doing an End Zone dance & spike. They will leave it up to some shrewd PR firm to spin this whole thing into the next news cycle. Ever notice how the Toyota sales numbers keep getting injected into the media, mostly at months end when car shopping is at a higher pace?
In closing, I liked Tony Stewart and appreciated the efforts of Denny Hamlin. Really don’t care what happens to Kyle Busch. Gibbs and Toyota deserves the likes of him…. I like shopping at Home Depot and Lowes stores are few and far between here in CT, but if HD follows Tony to sushi-land, hey I’ll drive the 30 miles or so to the nearset Lowes. At least most of the Kobalt tool line is made in the USA. Ever checked the label on a Husky tool????

September 6, 2007 at 8:46 pm
(43) Jeff says:

The reason I made the point about Montoya having 7 more F1 wins than every other NASCAR Nextel Cup driver (but not soon to be Truck Series driver Jauqes Villneuve, who has nine and one more WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP than everyone involved in NASCAR) is because F1 wins are way harder to get than NASCAR wins (Im not saying its easy to win a NASCAR race). If your an F1 driver you are one of 21 great drivers in the world (the 22nd driver is Sakon Yamamoto, who has no buissiness being in F1). NASCAR drivers are great, but not as great as 21 of the 22 F1 guys.

Oh by the way, IRL isnt going anywhere they are financialy stable. And in the very near future, Honda wont be the only manufactuer as the American manufacters are trying to get in again because Honda wants competition. ChampCar however is lucky if they get one more season of competition. As soon as Bourdais leaves for F1 the only star they actually have is Paul Tracy and Graham Rahal, and I guess Robert Doornboos. But they are screwed.

(49) get real says:

Jeff again, your examples are dumb and baseless. You are comparing f1, champ, irl to nascar? What is your theory that driving those open wheels is harder than nascar cars? Two different cars, with your theory if nascar cars is so much easier to drive then Juan wouldn’t be having as much trouble in driving his. Don’t give me the excuse his car, if he so much better he can adapt.

World champ what is a world champ? Expert and winning IN ALL type of cars and races or just the car he drives? Making a statement like that is like World Wrestling League, every franchise has a world champion.

If there are only 21 great drivers in the world and they are in F1 then that means they are 1 of 21 best drivers in the world for F1 and that’s ALL. Not all type of cars!!!!

I have been a loyal NASCAR fan for 15 years.. watched every race, bought tons of merchandise, attended several races, supported the sponsors, but NASCAR is ruining themselves. Brian France only cares about making more money. Having NASCAR race in Canada, and Mexico, getting more foreign drivers, allowing Toyota into the sport, the COT. It’s all a joke, and makes me care less about what happens. Watch NASCAR from the 80’s when it was real cars, real emotions, and real racing. Or just attend your local short tracks, and enjoy REAL racing.
