Tony Stewart In a Toyota?

By August 31, 2007

Follow me on:

Joe Gibbs Racing has scheduled a press conference for next Wednesday. The rumor is that Gibbs will announce that his racing team will be fielding Toyota Camrys beginning with the 2008 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season. This move will give Toyota the top tier team that they hope will make them more competitive in NASCAR's top series.

If the announcement goes as expected Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin will all be racing Toyotas in 2008. Can Tony, Kyle and Denny compete for a championship in the underperforming Toyota? 2008 will likely be a very different experience for Toyota fans.

(1) Patricia Erwin says:

I am not a Toyota fan. NASCAR is an American sport. I will be very disappointed if Joe Gibbs racing turns to Toyota. I know the cars are built in the US but by a foreign manufacturer and it just doesn’t seem right.

August 31, 2007 at 3:06 pm
(2) Don Ostler says:

Toyota’s are great….I look forward to it.

August 31, 2007 at 3:15 pm
(3) Pat says:

It’s a favorite Driver sport with me. In the old days the cars were different and it was a 50,50 race with both car and driver. Now all cars are pretty much the same. The fun is gone of seeing a new car model racing the next year.—- Pat

(4) K. Williams says:

See ya Tony and all the Gibbs cars…I’m sticking with GM, Ford or Dodges…….it was good while it lasted !!

August 31, 2007 at 4:21 pm
(5) Mary from Indy says:

Tony Stewart could drive a dump truck and still find a way to win!

August 31, 2007 at 4:28 pm
(6) Mary from Indy says:

Most Toyotas are now assembled by American workers in Indiana and Kentucky. Times have changed.

August 31, 2007 at 4:39 pm
(7) Bill says:

Toyota is not the first make of car not made in the US to race NASCAR. And for those fans that only want to root for the american manufracturers then you have a choice of Chevy and Ford. Dodge has been German owned for years. Also realize that even before the COT the cars on the track had nothing in common with their street legal counterparts other than the nose and name. The reason NASCAR started requiring head and tail light decals was to try and make them look more like their showroom counterparts. NASCAR should forget about the COT and the cars they are running now. Let them take the cars off the showroom, rip out the interior and install roll cages, fine tune the engine and put in fuel cells. Make them leave the body, suspension and everything else alone. Detroit would love it sense they would be racing true Detroit made cars instead of hybrids that have nothing in common with what Detroit is making.

August 31, 2007 at 5:00 pm
(8) Henry says:

I would be one to vote against it but I and understand it. The thought of a foreign manufaturer coming in is nothing new (dodge) but you have to admit it would introduce more competition. I’ll stick with JGR though. I’d like to see a few more fords and dodges as well. It would make it a little more fun. I just wish it was anybody other than JGR like maybe our rivals at Hendricks. Go Go Go JGR

August 31, 2007 at 5:41 pm
(9) 9seconds says:

I loved Stewarts quote on Nascar Prime Time this week about Nascar fans wanting to see American cars race.

August 31, 2007 at 5:59 pm
(10) 1969rs says:

The days of “what wins on Sunday, sells on Monday”, are gone. The only thing on the COT that would be Toyota would be the decals. Does not matter. Tony will drive the wheels off anything he jumps in.

August 31, 2007 at 6:17 pm
(11) Connie says:

Oh please ….I can not see Tony drive a toyota…I can’t stand toyota stay america
Joe think about it…..look at Dale Jarrett

August 31, 2007 at 7:06 pm
(12) kelly says:

I don’t think Tony Stewart has much say in this, do you? Unless Toyota can improve to a winning Nascar standard, then my two favorite drivers, Stewart and Hamlin are going to leave Gibbs or just drive into the wall a lot in 2008.

August 31, 2007 at 7:30 pm
(13) Old Spoke says:

Tony going toyota, More fans going to Jr.

August 31, 2007 at 9:12 pm
(14) Jeremy says:

I will pull for Tony in a Toyota before I pull for Earnhardt jr. at Hendrick!

August 31, 2007 at 9:24 pm
(15) Gene says:

I switched my UPS account at my company last year to Fed-Ex, now I’m going to tear up my Home Depot credit card and goes to Lowes. And to top it off, I’m a FORD guy.

August 31, 2007 at 9:44 pm
(16) Jeremy says:

You’re going to have to cance Fed Ex too if Gibbs goes to Toyota. Hamlin drives Fed Ex car. Looks like it’s the good ole postal service for you!

August 31, 2007 at 10:02 pm
(17) John says:

Dodge will soon be American owned again.

August 31, 2007 at 10:03 pm
(18) Gene says:

Fed-Ex is history. I’d go to Pony Express if used Mustangs.

August 31, 2007 at 11:42 pm
(19) T.J. says:

As a current Tony Stewart fan, I’m pissed off about this news. But what can Tony do about it? Nothing. He’s bound by his contract until 2009. And I don’t think Joe Gibbs realizes just how well Chevy (and Pontiac, another GM brand) have done for him.

August 31, 2007 at 11:47 pm
(20) Norm says:

It will take a couple years before Tony really gets it going. Look what happened when he went from Pontiac to Chevy. In his 3rd year, if I am not mistaken, he won the championship. By 2010, he will win in a Toyota as well. Go #20.

(24) James Darwin says:

It’s time to evolve, NASCAR apes! Toyota is here to stay. Haven’t you ever heard of Jackie Robinson? Open the doors and let everyone play. It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. Change is good.

September 1, 2007 at 6:55 am
(25) Mick20 says:

Your right #26 James Darwin except it should finish different!
(It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.) It’s the one with the most money!!!!!!!!!!!! & Toyota has a very DEEP pocket!

September 1, 2007 at 7:21 am

Tony can win driving anything..The cars are all the same..the engines are different..Look for a lot of Toyota Wins

(27) Leo Z says:

At this point does it really matter !I see it as business not sport .The body may look different but their all close in the wind tunnel .Money money ! Win on suday cant afford monday LOL

September 1, 2007 at 9:39 am
(28) Red Neck says:

NASCAR=Nothing About Stock Cars of America Remains! Cmon Tony..take a stand like you always do…we know these young punks like Hamlin and Kyle B. can’t do it! Hell they don’t even know how to spit or cuss good yet. Your true fans will respect you if you tell Papa Joe to take his foreign money and put it where the sun don’t shine!!

September 1, 2007 at 9:42 am
(29) Tracy says:

I think JGR is making a very big mistake. There drivers are doing just fine with chevy. I am not a toyota fan. i love chevy. well Joe GIbbs i hope your happy cause alot of fans arn’t gonna pull for people anymore and they are gonna be in the back and probaly not win any championships. Well im done watching racing. Tony and Denny where the reason i did watch it, but now i can’t stand to see them be put in a toyota. And i thought Tony had a contract with chevy for a few more years????

September 1, 2007 at 10:01 am
(30) Murphy says:

Right on Daisy Duke, your 100% correct.

September 1, 2007 at 10:11 am
(31) Steve6*11 says:

The big three auto makers (Employee Unions) have complained for years about Toyota, Saying how they take jobs away from Americans and then they go get in their TOYOTA and leave. Face the facts Toyota is part of America because “WE” made them that way.. So I say stop complaining about un-American and get ready to see them in the Winner Circle.
Like it or not thats a fact…. If Gibbs did’nt feel he could win with Toyota I don’t think he’d make the change. So now it’s baseball hotdogs apple pie and toyota……….And no one to blame but AMERICAN’S

September 1, 2007 at 11:19 am
(32) Paul says:

When are you people going to realize that Toyota and Gm have been in bed together for years? There are a lot of GM vehicles that share assembly lines and parts with Toyota. Get over it! Toyota is about to be the dominating manufacturer in NASCAR. We just need to have a “Camry SS” with the GM engine and it will only be a matter of re-skinning Tony’s Impala with Camry decals and look out!

September 1, 2007 at 11:28 am
(33) larry says:

I’ve been a DJ fan for many years I’m still a driver’s fan, If Tony Stewart stays with JGR INC.and if Toyta comes in ,I think TONY the( SMOKIN TIGER ) will drive like a true champion because he just loves to race anything ,It’s in his blood. DJ “WRONG TEAM TO DRIVER FOR” Still hoping for a win with Michael waltrip racing good luck! PS WE’RE not getting any younger

September 1, 2007 at 11:30 am
(34) joe stinker says:

Red Neck you know very good and well everytime Tony takes a stand he gets called in by nascar. Yes it be against his team but known nascar they find a something to call him in. Maybe like unbecoming of a nascar driver to say something against his team, or something like it.

September 1, 2007 at 11:45 am
(35) rhowardsta says:

I predict NASCAR will fade away. They are riding a wave right now.

September 1, 2007 at 12:23 pm
(36) PP says:

rhowardsta As been mention on here several of times. What goes up – it always comes down. When on top they always make decisions and have a attitude of no doing wrong. Nascar has been slipping for the last couple of years.

September 1, 2007 at 12:45 pm
(37) Smoke62 says:

Hey people, WAKE UP. Everyone talks about how Nascar is going down. Has anyone taken a look at how many comments are on this web site alone each day. Nascar isn’t going anywhere. They just need stuff like this to stir things up and get people talking.

September 1, 2007 at 12:58 pm
(38) Hotrod says:

When I Think Toyota’s I think Un- American! I don’t care where, how,or when there built! But if you look where NASCAR’s taking the sport it just shows they want out of the American Dream.
Joe Gibbs is Helping them out!
Why Not Bring back Pontiac’s, It was a sad day when they left the seen.
I’m sure Toyota will get stronger with the current JGR team but still seems wrong.
I now want to see Joe Gibbs Take his NFL team to The AFL since he’s decided
to Downgrade a Top Notch NASCAR team!!

September 1, 2007 at 1:40 pm
(39) john says:

smoke62, No, nascar will not go away, for one reason they are the only so called stock car race around, except for the locals. However, after that been said, nascar will not grow any bigger, they will and have slipped, and they will slip even harder in the VERY near future. If not for anything else for the lack of excitement and oh-um races (we see that now) another reason we will see nascar slip because of the cost factor – we will start to loose teams because sponsorship will be EVEN harder to come by. We will see lot more mergers. Attendance at the tracks will continue decline, and viewer ship on TV will also suffer, again we see that happen already.

No, nascar will not go away, but the only way they have to go is down. Remember the Indy league.

I use to not miss a nascar race for almost for any reason, but now I will watch it from time to time, when I think of it or have nothing else to watch. I do look in the paper on who won, though.

What I like to do now, and I found itís more enjoyable and exciting, I go to my local track now. I even go there when there is a Night nascar race.

September 1, 2007 at 1:44 pm
(40) Reggie says:

As a former racer from the 50s & 60s all I can say is it is a shame such a nice person as Joe can do this!

September 1, 2007 at 1:55 pm
(41) john says:

Reggie I REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR, I also remember the American Indians, and a lot of other things through out history. My dad, uncles all fought in WW2. The trick is that is in the past. I DID NOT SAY FORGET. Just canít be abscessed with it. I am willing to bet your TV, radio or several things that you bought made in Japan. Right?

September 1, 2007 at 3:37 pm
(42) Smoke62 says:

John, I think you misunderstood me. I do not think Nascar is going away, while it may not be growing much, I do not think it’s going away.

September 1, 2007 at 4:19 pm
(43) Ron says:

I think that NASCAR made a huge mistake in the first place allowing a foreign car maker into an American race! I certainly do not make any effort to watch the race! I used to be a fan.

September 1, 2007 at 4:29 pm
(44) Bob says:

Nascar needs Toyota – just in case GM, Ford and/or Dodge decides to quit racing!! But, it’s still a shame; Nascar is the all-American racing series and should stay that way.

(46) Ann says:

I think Joe Gibbs will contend for the championship next year. As they have contended for the championship the last eight years.

Why would a switch from one manufacture to another manufacture not make then a contender.

The COT is the one thing that assures Gibbs Racing a successful transition.

September 1, 2007 at 7:51 pm
(47) Eric says:

If I am not mistaken there was a feature on this thread earlier in the season about foriegn cars in NASCAR. I recall that there was a foriegn manufactured car in the 50′s or 60′s (jaguar,or peugeot,or some crap like that)its not a new idea.I don’t like it though. And as far as Toyota being made in America so what the profits are still seen and spend in the Japanese economy. As far as Dodge being German same thing profits in Germany. Yes Toyota and GM have shared some joint venture cars like the Chevy Sprint but to my knowledge that partnership has gone by the wayside. I just think JGR is Toyotas best chance of winning right now and Toyota ponied up the cash to make it happen. I just hope Tony does not get paid in yen or bot or whatever the heck they use over there.

September 1, 2007 at 8:28 pm
(48) charlie says:

I am surprised that American companies such as Home Depot and Fed-Ex would sponsor a Tieote. True nothing stock about these cars, but just seeing the name of Toyota on the front of those cars makes me sick. With poor rating you can bet when Toyota quits sand bagging and starts domination like the truck series you can bet rating will drop even more. Nascar you screwed up!

September 1, 2007 at 8:39 pm

(51) Grant says:

Huge Tony fan here. In todays racing we can pull for who we wish but we are not really supporting the driver or the team they race for. By watching races we are supporting the Home Depots, the Budweisers, and the AT&Ts. Corperate America. You can say that it is ok because Toyota is made in america. Wrong. By supporting Toyota we are supporting Corporate Japan. Nascar has already taken stock out of stockcar, now taking American out of Nascar. Be careful not to take the fans out too. Before long we will need interpreters for race interviews. Sorry Tony, Ill be looking forward to the day your back behind the bowtie.

I believe Tony still has a year left on his contract with JGR so lets wait & see what he does next year.

And I still say ESPN & Rusty SUCK!!!!!

(54) k9fan says:

Well, John, I tend to agree with you. How many who complain about Toyota in NASCAR own Japanese (or any foreign) made things around their homes. America needs to get with it and make better products and create jobs then here for those in the states. BUT who the heck cares who drives WHAT type of stock car in NASCAR??? The sad thing is, it used to be based a lot on the talent of the driver. Now it all seems to be based on the rules of NASCAR and the money they can bring in by making racing “fan-friendly”. That makes me laugh. I agree that dirt track racing is much more fun to watch now. I will continue to support my driver, but NASCAR race watching is not something I look forward to for weekend enjoyment any longer.

(55) Tom Humble says:

I surely hpoe that Tony, Kyle and

(56) Lloyd says:

Has anybody asked Smoke what he thinks?

I really love those fast Dodge, Ford and Chevy Indy cars. NASCAR was a good ole boys sport when I was drinking shine, but times have changed in my 60 years and so has NASCAR. At least the France family hasn’t sold NASCAR to China, or have they?

(60) Dave20 says:

Listen up. I don’t agree with JGR or Toyota. face it. There is no BIG 3 in the U.S.

Big 3 JUNK-mobiles.Toyota and Honda can be driven over 300,000 miles doing regular maintenance. I have a GM Monte Carlo that has been nothing but troble. Purchased new in 1997, now 83,000 miles + Engine has been rebuilt 2 times. Sleeveless wrist pin slap and dex-cool.

The Big 3. Needs to look at why a yota can run forever and get great milage???

Mr. Tony has the ability to win in any thing he drives. His blood has a race car in it.

Waltrip suck period. Yota is here to stay. I hope Gibbs can turn the corner and come out like a shining star. Unlike Watrip.. a dud.
Best of luck to 20 and 11 in whatever car they drive.. Except a Yugo

(63) john says:

Dave20 funny I had a corsica v6 with 190,000 miles still drove good minus a starter change. It was still good untill some kid decided to turn in front of me. I had a honda with 145.000 miles it was giving me trouble all the time. I once heard they had a test and took people blind folded and put them in all different makes both japan and americans and see which ones they like the best on confort and ride etc 85% of them picked American cars.
Reliability I really don’t think one is better than the other. If you take care of them maybe you was trying to drive your monte carlo like you do with a japan car they like their rpm’s rev more than the american cars. Think about it why is there more japan auto repair shops around more than any other?

you’ve got to be kidding. Tony, kyle and Denny are all great competitors and giving them inferior equipment won’t cut it. How can you expect a past champion and 2 up and coming young drivers, to be successful in JUNK. Just ask M.Waltrip.Joe Gibbs thought you had more common sense.

September 2, 2007 at 6:13 pm
(68) Dan says:

Tony is probably one of the best drivers ever! He’ll do well whatever wheel he is behind, however I also would prefer “Stock Cars” , with safety equipment installed, ran for the benifit of everyone. Afterall, isn’t proving the car as important as the man?

1. We’re still fighting World War 2
2. American Cars are still a better value even if they do fall apart due to poor quality.
3. It’s ok for Smoke to drive any make of car except a Ford.
4. NASCAR is being run like a business (weird concept) and is out for money and
5. The big three have been outsourcing their work to complete, because American’s are buying more Camary’s than Edsell’s, Nash Ramblers and Barricuda’s.

September 2, 2007 at 7:14 pm
(71) Go Figure says:

Lloyd I don’t know but I still have my american car where my honda is in the junk yard. The trick is when something breaks or wears out it needs to be fixed. Friend of mine is an Mechanic, he’s worked at a Toyota and a domastic car dealorship, he kept very busy both places, the only difference was for some odd reason people with a japan car was willing to put 500-700 plus in their car to fix it where as a person with a chevy/ford would get their car fix for half that amount decide not fix it and then complain the car was falling apart, go figure.

(72) An Opinion says:

This thing about Japan, German cars are so much much better than the American cars hog wash. It all depends what a person likes. I read Business week and they said in 2006 GM had the most recalls in that year. In 2007 VW has the most cars and Toyota, Nissan was after VW. Where as GM had far less than those of Toyota, VW, Nissan in 2007. Jeep has a high recall rate in 2007, but what can you say about Jeep, it’s a Jeep. Business week again if you look at it for the realiability cars Amercican cars took most of the top honors NOT all but most.

September 2, 2007 at 9:36 pm
(75) Curt says:

One more thing, all three American manufacturers need to get together, and start their own racing league. NASCAR is going to die, just like PPG/Cart did in the 80′s. They were on top of the worls, got greedy, let in foreign junk and foreign drivers and plumeted off the face of the Earth, because no American cares about foreign makes and rivers. Notice any similarities? Its happening in NASCAR, and then you wonder why people keep talking about history. It’s them trying to remind you that people that dont know their history are doomed to repeat it. They just don’t say it in that manner. I’d love to see the Big 3 start a league with no restrictor plates so the cars could actually do their 240 MPH and then it would be all about the racer with the balls to race the car that fast and win. NO foreign anything!!!! No rules. Innovation is strongly promoted. Just like Penske in PPG (well IRL now). But, they wont even let roger do what he does best, now. This COT crap has got to end, its not the IROC series. Crap drivers dont deserve to be on TV, just because they got a 15 million dollar sponsor. If they suck, they go to the back!

(77) Lloyd says:

Go figure has figured it out. I have had Toyota’s since 1970, when I was living in Texas, and a go worker sold me one. I am on my tenth or eleventh. Lost count. The thing is I follow a regular preventative maintenance program every 5,000 miles cost me approximately $74 and is worth it. I don’t think Joe Gibbs is selling out America by going to Toyota as Kyle Bush has accidently confirmed, but I believe the Big 3 got so rapped up in making trucks that they forgot how to make a good sedan. Now they are behind and it will take time for them to get themselves back on track with what the American public wants and the foreign car manufactures have known. I take it back GMAC did come out with a economy car resently, the Hummer 3 was advertised as one. Actually, I work for the larged home lender in the country in forclosures. It saddens me to hear unemployed auto workers tell me their stories about their jobs being outsourced. Recently one ex-Ford employee told me he had to train his foreign replacement and help back equiptment to be sent to Mexico before they laid him off due to the plan closing down permanently. We are right to complain about NASCAR and the impact of foreign cars, but are wrong to say we will not watch in the future. How many of you enjoyed the Nextel race this evening and prayed Mickie would be alright?

Come on people – this is NOT or SHOULD not be about where a car is made. Nascar is about competition. It’s about good drivers, good teams & enjoyment of the SPORT. So many of these threads get blown so far away from what they SHOULD be about it’s become a source of comedy for many of us to read…

ALL SPORTS are about the money – why do you think we pay the big bucks to go watch them??

Look at all the sponsors…really look at who they are – and many of them have been there for YEARS…and you want to complain NOW?

The only way to take foreign ANYTHING out of ALL of our sports is to stop having them. Not gonna happen anytime soon! Our players are foreign in many of our “team” sports (football, basketball, etc.) our stadiums & tracks now carry the names of sponsors or businesses that are not “American” yet we KNOW them because we do business with them on a daily basis in one form or another…

Stop complaining, enjoy the sport or don’t. I for one don’t care what they drive – just do it well & walk away alive.

jhpatience, I like the sport BUT I will NEVER pay those ticket prices. Nothing is worth those kind of prices. I can watch the race, drink my beer, pop, whatever and even act like a fool like lot of them do at the track in the privacy of my home. After seeing the race last night I noticed there were lot of empty seats, higher the ticket prices, more dumb changes nascar does you will see more and more empty seats. You are right about other sports going with foreign players, look at the cart and IRL ratio 1 american to 5-7 foreign? Along the changes they did look at the audiance they have now. Want to look at Nascar future, look at the irl, cart. They can’t even get a full field of cars for a race.

I really think it sucks that JGR is doing this to TONY. I really hope that TONY tells JOE to take his toyota and put it where the sun does not shine. I have been a Tony fan since the day he came to Nascar. I am also A huge CHEVY fan. All we can hope that is Tony Tells Gibbs that when his contact is up he is out. Remember, TONY is so Damn good he could undoughtably Name his price and any other team in Nascar would pay it to have the best driver in Nascar. I will follow TONY untill he leaves Nascar I just hope It will be in a CHEVY.

I know I keep babbling on, but one more thing I wanted to address. Someone brought up a poit early on that ALL american sports have foreigner in them now. I can point to the NFL, which has very few, and is there any coincidence that the NFL has grown it’s brand tremendously over the last decade and a half? I think not. People in America can still identify with the NFL. MLB has had a huge influx in the last decade and a half of foreigners, and has plumeted just as the percentage of foreigners has increased. Coincidence? I think not. Same as the NBA, it is actually growing again, now that they have went back and added more talent from America, but they still arent as popular as they were in the 80′s, because they still haven’t cut out foreigners. One day, they might figure it out, but it wont be too soon, because the NFL is rying to expand into Europe with a regular season game in England this year. They just keep thinkin our cultural influence is going to dominate, and try after try, they never learn. Just as we don’t like foreigners in our sports, they dont like our sports. All the past experiences, you think their brain would be laying on the ground by now knocking their head against the wall. Oh well, maybe they will learn one day.

Funny thing a person can put a name any name on here and the rest of us suppose to think that is their name.

Oh yea about Chrysler, is that why they had to merge with Mercedes to keep a float, and Mercedes dumped them recently? Sell out I be willing to bet youíre one of the people bought some their cars and small pick-ups that Mitsubishi built for them in the 80′s, right? Yea keep wages so high no one can or want to pay those high prices for their cars and trucks. Keep wages as high you want, eventually they may not have that problem, I will place a bet with the new owners with in 6 months they will lay off more people and shut down plants. If you kept up with the news and stop assuming you would have read that the new owners of Chrysler said they already talked to china and plan to import cars in from there, before they had the papers signed with Mercedes. Remember your own words Dont be illiterate, and get all the facts straight.

I have been an employee of The Home Depot for 18 years even before they picked up Tony. Over the past years I have become a great fan of the number 20, In the early years it was hard to show support because not to many people liked him, but I was there through even the worst of times. Now it is a new day and things are changing. Everyone want something for nothing, and infact exspects it. I know that the choice to drive toyota must have earned Joe Gibbs alot of money, and I’m sure his drivers as well. I dont agree with the idea of a forgen auto maker competing in NASCAR, but what can I do about it. All one person can do is buy from detroit, and root for one of the big three to win. Because I am from Detroit and I have experianced the effects of the weakening American Auto Makers first-hand, I see no way to be a fan of the sport, like we all are and at the same time root for a company that is helping ruin Detroit’s name. I will no have to find a new driver, and that not going to be easy, but it has to be done.no driver of mine can race a car thats making money for Japan. Not to mention that The Home Depot is “America’s Home Improvment Wharehouse”. After 18 years with the same company, and now with a Toyota sponsership, I beleave it is now time to explore what else is out there for me. Its a new day, and its all about money.

(91) Jeff says:

WOW. How little you people bashing Toyota know about corporate America or probably America in general. All of you who say Toyota (rice rockets)should go then you must also want that (Jackboot Nazi) Dodge to go also. And for those that talk about all this corporate money going back to Japan don’t forget all those American Union workers who would not have a job if Toyota was not being built in America. America gets far more money from Toyota in the form of wages and tax revenue than Japan gets from the cars sold here. Just be man or woman enough to admit that you are simply hypocritical bigots. I bet 99% of you who call tootas Jap cars or rice rockets own several japanese consumer electronics. Besides almost every car made by Chevy, Ford, Dodge have Japanese products in them. Shoot Even Harley Davidson has parts made in China. Get a life and watch the sport for what it is. A race between individuals who want to compete.

September 4, 2007 at 5:28 pm
(92) Jeff says:

I have to correct a typo in my last post. I did not mean to say Toyota was union. I had a different thought process when I was typing. Toyota is not part of the UAW but they are still all American workers. And if Toyota moved away to say Mexico like some of our american manufactures are doing and just imported cars into the US our economy would go down the toilet with all the lost jobs.

jeff yes we may have japan made products in our home, then again if they made tv’s, radios or other stuff here I would buy them instead. Then again that is where people priced themselves out of a job. There is a difference when there is no choice what we buy here only made in japan and there is a choice. Yes chevy, ford have parts made elsewhere, then again most parts are made from gm, ford owned compaines. The money thing you had said where did you get your stats from?

September 4, 2007 at 7:53 pm
(95) bulldog says:

jeff, I under stand I think we are on the same wave link on some things. The American workers are pricing themselves right out of a job. Where we disagree at while some Chevys made (or put together) in Mexico and some in Canada, they used parts made here in us or company owned factories. While Toyota canaryís have a Kentucky (?) factory on the price sticker, all they are still put together with Japan parts in Kentucky, not made just put together like a puzzle, just as the trucks in Texas. Only thing American about them is the Americans workers put the puzzle together with foreign made parts that was shipped in. I donít think its being a hypocritical bigots, when some one buys a TV from Sony or any other electronics from Japan, Korea, etc because we really donít have a choice. 99.999% of all TV and electronics are made over there, including the so-called American brands.
For every product that is brought in the usa is the fault of Americans. Either they over priced themselves out of a job or they rather buy products made over there instead of here, and drove the companies to move jobs else where or out of business. This old thing they build better things, of what I had owned and others I know their things wasnít any better than ours, Yes we had our bad years, but so did they.

For one, I am a Toyota technician at a dealership. Number two, I’ve been a Tony Stewart (and all JGR) fan for several years. I am very excited that JGR has decided to run Toyota next year. Also, to all the closed minded racists who tell Toyota to go back to Japan, think about how many American jobs would be lost if that was to occur. Please do some research about how many Americans are employed by, and how many American companies are supported by Toyota. Don’t forget steel workers, electronics manufacturers, upholstry, etc. Not to mention that there is a majority of the powertrain components being manufactured and assembled here is the good ol’ US of A. All the assembly plant workers, dealership employees, and all the support personnel, not to mention any other departments that I missed are making a living and paying taxes to our US government because of this “foreign” company. Lets take a look at Chevy, Ford and Dodge, all of whom I have respect for as corporations, but do a lot of their manufacturing and assembly in Mexico and Canada, supporting workers of other countries. As far as I know, all of the North American production for Toyota is done in the USA, supporting all of our workers. Again, all that I ask is you do a little research before spouting off any racist hatred!!! GO TONY!!!!!!!! GO DENNY!!!!!!! and GO KYLE!!!!!!!!!

My coworker with the 01 Accord that has 100K miles on it; I pick him up at the Honda repair department on the average of once a month. Now yawl tell me which one is better. Again, I have no beef with Chevy or any other American product. I drive a Chevy, wife drives a Ford, used to drive a Chevy. I also own a British car. SHHHHHHH. Don’t bring any other countries into this discussion. Working for Toyota and also fixing all my own cars, plus fixing all other makes and models of cars for a living, I can honestly say that a Toyota, not all, but most (they’re still a machine prone to breakage) are much more reliable and will still have a nice ride and feel 5 years down the road than any Chevy, Ford, or Dodge. Quality sells. As far as the profit hiding to avoid taxes goes, I dont think there is any large corporation out there that doesn’t do it. American, Japaneese, Chineese, Canadian, or the like. Hell, who hasn’t overvalued a Good Will donation on thier taxes? Fact of the matter is still this. Toyota employs Americans, Toyota buys from American companies, Toyota pays American taxes, just because they have originated from an overseas company, doesn’t make what they do here in the states unAmerican. I love the USA, love American products, love creation of US jobs, and also love a quality product that has been built in the USA (e.g. Camry, and several other models). I’m not trying to start any arguments, but that is my personal preference. I will buy anything built in the USA by American workers before I will buy a foreign product that was built in another country by foreign workers. After all this is a Tony Stewart forum not a Chevy or Toyota forum. I will root for Tony whether he drives a Chevy, Toyota, hell even a f****ng Kia (Korean). Let’s not even go there! Like I have said before—-Go Tony!!!…Go Denny!!!…Go Kyle!!! I root for all of JGR!!! p.s. is anyone going to be in Richmond this weekend?(I’d love to meet you in person as a fellow Tony fan. They are bound by contract, and they have a chance to redeem themselves should they leave Gibbs when their contracts expire. September 9, 2007 at 6:33 pm
(131) Whoopie do says:

ToyotaGuy what amazes me is anytime someone comes back after another person they have to play a want to-be schoolteacher. I could care less who owns them. Crawling back if Tony wins the cup in one, crawling back to what? I have to say I got a chuckle when you say about my union breaks. I was union about ten years ago, and yes I got two breaks a day, but they wasnít union breaks the state that I worked in, the breaks was a state law for everyone get a break one before lunch and one after lunch. So Toyota donít give you breaks? Then again, I do not ever remember that I mention to you about being union. Yes, one should be proud of the employer that they work for; if they were good enough to give you a job then you should be proud, even if they do have factories in 23 other countries outside of Japan. So much for your example of the US automakers although, I do get your point. Do you find it funny when an American automaker have a recall itís front page news, on every channel, and when a foreign automaker have one, and they have many you have to find it in the paper? Do not say that a foreign automaker recalls are rare either. One of advantage I have I have a good friend works at one of the only two Toyotas distributors that is not owned by Toyota Company. Then again, my friend told me after they went to a Toyota conference about the new truck plant that Toyota was building in San Antonio that Toyota was not planning be as head strong in the cars the first year or two as they did with the trucks series, seem dumb to me, then after I read about on how Toyota did the same thing in the open wheel series they lay low for a year or two then went all out. Look it up.

What I find is sad, people such as you try to justify by saying ďWell at least Toyota and Honda putting Americans to work.Ē The US automakers did not help their situation either by no means. However, Toyota and Honda come here with cheap cars, and people seen these cars and start to buy them. They did not stop and think of what kind of damage to the American worker in the near future would happen. Now the cheap cars are long gone, still very pricy on getting them fix, reliable? Go to a dealer and see the waiting line for them. Not any better than the American cars, all have their problems. Putting American workers back to work by what expense? Canít blame Toyota or Honda they seen the writing on the wall and the American people fell for it. Even you by your statement.

September 9, 2007 at 7:26 pm
(132) ToyotaGuy says:

Whoopie Do…I do not claim that Toyota is the second comming of the Messiah…but what the American car companies are doing is unforgivable…most of my family devoted their lives to working hard for GM…only to have GM run to other countries when times got tuff…I am saying the blame needs put on the domestic manufacturers…not on the imports for running good businesses…it was the greed of companies like GM Ford and Chrystler (and their subsidiaries and suppliers) that caused this mess…people need to understand that we now operate in a GLOBAL economy…and we need to look at and support those companies who choose to bring work to America rather than find ways to leave this country…as far as recalls…all mass produced products will encounter recalls…it is unavoidable. Historically however the imports have less serious recalls then the domestics…quality means more to Toyota than it does to GM…What cost has it been to the American worker for a foreign company to buil plants and employ them…the cost to the American worker has been American companies only caring about the boardmembers salaries and closing American plants…Imagine the tragedy to the American workforce if companoes like Toyota didn’t move operations here and provide jobs…the already catastrophic job loss rate in manufacturing…since 2005 we have lost 2.7 million US manufacturing jobs…while Toyota has created 30,000 jobs…that number does not include jobs created by suppliers and shipping companies to support Toyota manufacturing…and that number is expected to increase…the real culprit is those contributing to the loss of jobs not those helping to create it!

September 10, 2007 at 8:39 am
(133) Whoopie do says:

Toyotaguy I understand of what you are saying the difference of what you are saying and me is. If I read it correctly, you are putting most if not all the blame on the American business. I did say they did not help themselves. Where we differ, I also put most or equal of the blame on the American Public, for not seeing anything except for cheap cars, and products it was only natural though. Eventually it was going to take a toll so Business would have to find a way to cut cost. Face it Americans want American products and American made would you agree, However after saying that- if they find the same product cheaper, no matter where it is made or who makes it they will buy it, and then complain because nothing made in the usa anymore. Toyota, Honda I do not blame them they do make good cars no doubt, I just do not think they are as good what people say they are. I had owned a Hondas, and Toyotas and family members have them. I had just as much trouble with them as I did with my Chevys, and fords. The only difference again was my Chevys and fords were cheaper to fix. I will still buy a Toyota if I find one I like.
On recalls, yes I do know that anybody can have recalls. True the foreign carmakers had a history having less of them. Couple of weeks ago I read Gm had the most recalls in 2006, I heard that before around the first of the year too. But I read in 2007 gm had only about 35,000 cars recalled towards the bottom of the list where as VW has the most over 1 million and Toyota, Honda, Nissan running NEAR the top of the list along side with ford and jeeps. I ran across that article from business week by accident.
Oh by the way please accept my apologies for my First comment to you.

(134) ToyotaGuy says:

Whoopie Do…I will forgive your first comment if you will forgive my comebacks…The part of your argument I don’t understand is about he cheap cars…a Toyota is a more expensive vehicle than an American product…especially when the domestic manufacturers put out monster rebates…yet even in the face of that Toyota is the #1 selling car manufacturer…not only based on the number of cars they sell…but also in profit and revenue…the cars are not cheaper yet they sell more…why is that?…It’s because people understand quality and value…they know they may pay slightly more than buying a Ford or GM…but they understand that quality has a price…it reminds me of a sign in my tattoo guys shop…”good tattoos are not cheap and cheap tattoos are not good”…you pay for quality…and based on sales performance the American public thinks Toyota is a better quality product…these manufacturers need to wake up and understand quality matters…you can’t get by just throwing rebate money around to try and compete…the only thing huge rebates do is DE-value your product and cost the manufacturer money…once Detroit realizes how important quality is to consumers they will be a player in the game again…I am pro competition…I believe if you have a superior product competition will only make you improve what you have…And just look how much press Toyota is helping to create for Nascar through this…competition is what it is all about!

(136) Whoopie do says:

Toyotaguy, No they are not cheap I guess I forgot to put in what I was trying to say about that. Toyota and honda when they started to sell cars here they had cheap cars. They had more exspensive and better ones back home in Japan, remember seeing them there. They sold cheap ones here and after getting a footing they started to get some of the better ones here. If my memory serves they just became #1 automaker this year.
Yes the us automakers give rebates where as toyota don’t (I wish I kept the article I read about this)However they do other things with their leasing, that pretty much equal of giving rebates, (again I wish I kept the article) to get rid their cars, trucks at the end of the year and other times.
Yes quality matters, no argument from me there and lot of US cars lack that however I will not say all us cars lack quality nor I will say all japan cars are all quality. Example of that is my cousin’s new toyota van, been in the shop several times since they bought it in January. Her old van also a toyota she drove tires off of it with only normal problems. Then again a person will always find a lemon in all cars. As I said my to cars from japan I had just as much problems with them as I do with my chevy. Again they do make good cars, I just think most of them are little over rated. If a person do prenative maint on their cars they would not have as much problems with 95% of all cars. For some odd reason people are more willing put more money in their toyotas and honda than the american cars for the same problem. Anyway its a and only of people opinions of what they like, I am not afraid to buy toyota, honda nor am I afraid in buying US brand.

(137) ToyotaGuy says:

Whoopie Do…I’d be afraid to buy a domestic right now…just think of resale value alone…when a company will discount a new vehicle heavily (sometimes over $10,000 off) what do you think that does to trade values…why would someone buy a used car for more than they would a new one.
Ford is in sooo much trouble you have to think if there will be replacement parts available (from Ford not junk yards) in the future. If they fold as a company how will you fix your vehicle if it breaks down?

(138) Whoopie do says:

Toyota guy, True ford is in trouble but I think I be more worried with Chrysler than ford though. The only reason Chrysler lasted this long because of the deep pockets Mercedes, now they lost that well 80% of it, who knows I bet you anything Chryslers be down sizing in the near future. The new owners already said before the deal went through they were talking with china.

You know I had to admit why some cars held a resale value better than others until just recently, one of the biggest reasons ford, gm, and Chrysler build a lot of particular cars and sells them to the rent a car companies by doing that they flood the market with certain models. I read that is why ford, Chrysler donít know about gm going to stop the mass production for these rent a car companies. Yes rent a cars buys foreign makes too, but you have to agree not as many though.

Whoopie Do…You are right about the rental fleets…When they come off lease they flood the market…and yes Toyota fleets to rental companies but not in the same volume…and they just started doing it recently…and you are right about Chrytler…but Ford has even looked at consolidating dealerships…if there are dealers within a certain mile radius they want to force one to close and combine the two…The one thing I can say is it looks like GM is taking these problems seriously…Lutz has said publicly that they need to look at companies like Honda and Toyota and replicate many of their designs and programs…If he stays at the helm GM has a chance

Jeff, if you prefer that name, you should often take your advice about proof reading, it may help. I often have fun talking and discussing things with people like you because its always entertaining and funny to do, for you always make it a simple thing to do, but there is always a point in time where the fun has to end and start to pity for that person. Keep on posting I will be laughing curt or jeff.

So, big mouth yanking posts once again that schools him in his bafoonery of comments on quality. Just as expected, he pulled the post i put on here schooling him yet once again on quality practices, which was the original #163.

As stated in there, keep up the mis-information, because you have no clue ToyankaGuy. Or any other manufacturers practices, as I stated in there. I’ll just start to post under Bundle of Misinformation in your honor.

Is About.com a jap owned site? They pull every post I make when i school ToyankaGuy on quality practices, this must be a hit parade site, like Motor Trend and the rest of the slew of Jap car hypers. Because they are owned by the Japs.

All the Japs got, is mis-information and the mindless numb Americans who believe some 50 foot machine dinosaur actually breaks on a Tacoma. Ya…..LOL.

You may now pull this post too, because we don’t want “dumb” Americans too have some sense talked to them, unlike ToyankaGuy’s mis-information posts.

WOW I seem to agree with grow up on this one maybe Bigmouth, sure have a lot of names on here should go and re-read that comment again, and figure it out that the other person that you making a fool of your self with, Yes a fool of your self unless his name is Steve that runs this site has not pulled your comments. On grow up last comment I think have to agree and disagree with that person comment. I do not agree of what that person had said they think these comments are funny assuming they were talking about yours, I for one do not think they are funny however, I do agree with the person when they had said they do pity the other. I do have a quick question for you if I may ask couple of weeks ago a person was on here, again making a fool of them about the race up in Canada, you would not happen be the same person would you.

Hey Steve, Do we have to read the garbage this multi-name person I. E. curt, Bundle of Mis-information, and Bigmouth putting on here? I know for one and I’m sure there are others are growing tired of his racial slurs and lack of skills of getting along with others and the rest of the garbage comes out of his mouth in this case on your forum.

Surly this multi-name cannot be Naive enough to think people will take him any more than a fr-cake. Even if he did know what he was talking about, he could not prove it by the way he acts. I would believe the other person more.

(147) Bundle of Mis-Information says:

See, look people, now the trashers are out, to try and discredit the person speaking the truth, now you see the Japs for what thet are and how they handle disention, blackball and countless attempts to dis-credit.

If they can’t win, they attack. May the hit parade continue…. Show your true colors. “even if I do know what I’m talking about”? Ok, ask me some logical questions then, if I don’t. I got the quality engineering degree, do you? I’m speaking the truth, all you got is attacks and taking down of my post’s to educate people. Every single one of my posts, where I spoke of quality issues, has been taken down, and especially the ones I expose the Japs for how they handle themselves in business in America.

You speak of their great practices and “quality” cars, I expose the truth and get my posts taken off the site. But sure, you got to be right seeing how you wont let the other side of the story be told……

Ok, so now I am a bigot eh? What, because I say Japs huh? Well, when you call me an un-hyphenated name such as an American I will call you Japanese. You call me a United Stated of American, then I will say Japanese. Until then, hyphenation will stay in effect.

Keep the hit parade coming, I know you Jap supporters can do it, show your true colors.

I had read these comments I did not see anything about calling people names on here except this person and yet he spitting out of someone had; he must get himself mixed up with others. I do 100% agree with you He is beyond pity. Unlike you jerry, I do find him funny and other things, except of course for the name-calling. He already acts like a spoiled fifth grader and with the name calling second grader. I am also done with him I will read and laugh at him too on his gibberish but try and too reason with him is like trying to reason with a wall, well maybe the wall have little more since to it. Hey, Keith you did call him a frt-cke shame on you and me. Other than Keith one time mention and me of name calling of what it seems to be the truth on this one. Looks like to me this guy sure can give it out on the name calling thing but if someone calls him one, and after reading just a couple of his comments. I do agree with you on the fruit-ke, he certainly has proven that very well. I went back, read, and see no evidence of it, except one person had said something about a Janitor, thatís not naming calling that, is an occupation.

(153) Are US citizens really this ignorant? says:

It’s amazing, but not surprising, how much hatred and ignorance people are willing to display in an anonymous format.

Negative comments about foreign automakers (and foreign products) among the NASCAR supporters is laughable on a number of levels, but I like this analogy a lot.

Look at a US map of all the race tracks in the US with a NASCAR Nextel Cup race (http://www.theinsidegroove.com/misc/track_map3.jpg).

Look at the WalMart locations in the US (http://www.minneapolisfed.org/pubs/fedgaz/06-03/Wal1962-2004_nov_05.wmv)

Notice how seamlessly the density of WalMart locations and NASCAR tracks overlap across the south, midwest and eastern states.

WalMart accounts for 2.5% of the United States Gross National Product (GNP), created 1/10th of the US trade deficit with China and imported 27 billion dollars a year from China in 2006 alone.

Look at how many American jobs are being lost at the hands of WalMart (http://blog.aflcio.org/2007/06/27/wal-marts-china-imports-cost-200000-us-jobs)

Think about the large percentage of NASCAR fans who are shopping at WalMart, a statistically fact-based conclusion based on population, WalMart location and revenue.

Look at how many US jobs Toyota creates and how much money they contribute to the economy (http://www.toyota.com/about/usa/usdata/by_numbers.html).

Toyota is more American than a lot of the ďAmericanĒ businesses that NASCAR followers happily support with their hard earned American money. Looks like the Toyota haters are missing the boat. Pun intended.

Anyways your American car companies are scrambling to move production out of the United States…it won’t be long untill ALL car manufacturers are foreign!! At least Toyota is moving production HERE!!

I really miss the old days when men drove these cars and were not penalized for a little bumping. Maybe Nascar is making a fortune, but they sold out in order to do so.
