Carl Edwards Wins Very Different Bristol Night Race

Saturday August 25, 2007
Tonight's 2007 Sharpie 500 was not a typical Bristol night race. Now that Bristol has a second usable groove there was a lot less bumping and grinding. We saw a lot of great side-by-side racing tonight which seems to be a fair trade for the brute force and high tempers that we used to see.

The reconfigured Bristol Motor Speedway certainly changed the complexion of tonight's race. What do you think? Do you prefer the new racier Bristol or the the old beating and banging Bristol?

(1) Smoke62 says:

WOW!!! What a difference at Bristol. No more single file, bumper to bumper racing. Hats off to the crew at Bristol Motor Speedway for redoing the track and doing it right.

(2) bill says:

What a great race by the 99 car tonight. Him and Kahne up front all night. And a nice backflip on the banking.

August 26, 2007 at 1:12 am
(3) Jadi says:

It was a great race by carl but tonights race was so BORING!! I love racing but the only excitement was when harvick got up behind his “best buddy” montoya. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for the bump and run, and it never happened. This went from being my favorite race to one that was just ok.

August 26, 2007 at 1:17 am
(4) thekingcobra63 says:

I suppose I am old school, but I liked the old Darrel Waltrip Bristol races better. especially with the COT, or “Sherman Tank” going to be used, let it smash and bang like it looks like it was built to do.

August 26, 2007 at 2:01 am
(5) Gordon24Fans says:

They ruined the Bristol night race. This was so boring!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ll be anxious to see if they sell out this race next year. This was the one race you couldn’t wait to see. All the bumping and banging tempers flying. Not tonight.

August 26, 2007 at 2:19 am
(6) 9 fan says:

WHEW!!! Makes me wish I would have seen the race. I didnt even catch a lap. Heard the final 2 spots on the local news. KASEY, I knew he had it in him… Ive read the first few posts. VERY MIXED RESULTS. I guess BRISTOL has now become a “LOVE-IT-OR-HATE-IT” track. Anyway

HATS OFF to Cousin Carl. And of course
keep it up KASEY!!!! Its about time.

August 26, 2007 at 2:22 am
(7) 9 fan says:

I just remembered. The last comment thread I said “KASEY GRAB BRISTOL BY THE HORNS” Just a thought, but do you think he may have read that? I mean he kinda did grab Bristol by the Horns. Anyway maybe I should try it again, HUH? OK maybe not! bye you all

August 26, 2007 at 5:13 am
(8) david says:

i agree with jadi, it was a boring race.
Bristol just went to the back of the lineup for me. it was so boring i switched channels over to the vikings game.

August 26, 2007 at 8:22 am
(9) Marie says:

Yes, it was a boring race but a good race what we could see of it. Get rid of ESPN, they are terrible, there was more commercials than racing.

August 26, 2007 at 9:31 am
(10) RON says:

HI ALL THOUGHT I’D DROP MY 2CENTS IN FAR FROM A BORING RACE IF YOU WATCHED ALL (BY THE WAY COMMERCIALS ARE TOO MANY AND AT THE WRONG TIMING THIS ANT FOOTBALL WHERE THEY HAVE TV TIME OUTS WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO BUT TIVOS AND OTHER HI TIC CRAP TO WATCH THE WHOLE RACE SO WHY DON’T THE BROADCASTERS ESNP TNT OR WHO EVER EXTEND YOUR BROADCAST BY USEING YOUR DELAY PLAY AND SHOW THE WHOLE RACE)BACK TO BRISTOL GREEN TRAC(NEW CONCREATE) EXPARMENTAL TIRES GOOD YEAR GOT A HARD TIRE MAYBE NEXT TIME THE’LL GOT A BRISTAL TIRE HOW EVER LOT OF PASSING IN THE RACE NOT JUST INTHE PITS 19TH TO 2ND 20TH TO 1ST THREE WIDE RACING WONT BE LONG BEFORE THEY GET THESES CARS TO THE POINT THAT THEY GET THEM FAST THEN MAYBE IT WILL BE LIKE TELLADGA (THE BIG ONE) IF THE RECKS ARE ALL YOU CAR ABOUT i LIKE TO SEE THEM TOO BUT i ALSO LIKE THAT FACT THAT NOW @ BRISTOL YOU CAN COME FROM THE BACK AND RACE YOUR WAY TO THE FRONT AND HAVE A CAR LEFT TO STAY THERE HAMLIN 43RD TO 11TH BEFORE HE BLOW UP ( NOT THAT I LIKE HIM BUT) GORDEN&JR FROM 19TH&20 TO TOP TEN IN LESS THAN 100 LAPS AND HAD SOME CAR LEFT TO RUN THERE BAD LUCK FOR JEFF LAP DOWNBACK TO FINISH 19THON LEDLAP ANY WAY BRISTOL WILL GET BETTER WITH TIME

August 26, 2007 at 9:58 am
(11) john says:

Bristol just became another OH-UM track round and round OH-UM. Yes no single line but that is the only thing. The comericals ran every 4 minutes and lasted for three minutes so we go 50-50 race.

August 26, 2007 at 10:32 am
(12) willy says:

Im not sure if I can fairly judge the track yet. The coverage was terrible. What ever happened to showing the line-up after pit stops. You had to wait 5-6 laps to find out where everyone was at.And the final lap when R Gordon spun,Rusty said (we all know hes one of the best drivers out there)are you serious?

August 26, 2007 at 10:39 am
(13) |Lloyd says:

I agree with the pack by falling asleep twice during Bristol. The Bristol Stomp has become the Bristol Waltz. I have been watching races since the 50’s and give me the good ole boys style race at Bristol. Is it possible to retro fit Bristol for the next race? Now, maybe to stir up the pot a bit. Anyone, besides me, think Michael needs a talking too, from Nascar, about his actions with his obviously planned blocks of the leaders? I know Mikey is upset this year with his new Toyota team, but come up he’s an old pro.

August 26, 2007 at 10:47 am
(14) willy says:

Your right Lloyd.I think Mikey cost Kasey the race.Passing Didnt appear to be that easy up front.

August 26, 2007 at 12:22 pm
(15) Timmy says:

Oh! Carl Edwards won? I fell asleep. It was so boaring… zzzzzzzz….

August 26, 2007 at 12:50 pm
(16) Leo Z says:

When im working in the garage or driving in the car ,I find MRN radio broadcast to be much more exciting !Last night listenig was better then watching on TV.

August 26, 2007 at 1:37 pm
(17) john says:

Bristol Lost its uniqueness,as I said before it’s just another oh-um track. Kasey is an ok driver but he can’t handle traffic very well and it showed last night.

August 26, 2007 at 2:22 pm
(18) Jacob Rippas says:

The new surface at Bristol has turned an exciting event into another NASCAR bore-in. I was there and the fans mostly sat on their hands. It’s shame. Somebody at NASCAR needs to do something…quick…or Bristol tickets will be selling two for a dollar.

August 26, 2007 at 2:25 pm
(19) MattFan says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I like the new Bristol. Two and three wide racing on a half mile track is hard to beat, and at Bristol speeds. On the other hand, I guess I’ll miss the “smash up derby” days of old.

As far as ESPN goes; they should stick to covering children’s games played by grown men, they have no concept of a sport such as racing. MRN radio does do a very good job, I have been known to turn off the sound from the TV and listen to the radio broadcast instead.

John: Still no “Rusty dirty air”! LOL!

August 26, 2007 at 3:23 pm
(20) Ken says:

The Bristol race was good but it doesn’t beat the old Bristol. I missed all the bumping and the green flag runs were too long.

August 26, 2007 at 3:27 pm
(21) John E says:

Sorry!Bad race and bad ESPN coverage
I imagine seats will now be available for Bristol races, since there is no Rust on side of car.
Yea for the good old Rusty-Darrell daye.

August 26, 2007 at 3:33 pm
(22) John Edwards says:

Sorry!Bad race as well as bad ESPN coverage.I imagine seats will now be available for future Bristol races if you would like to attend. No Rust on side of cars.Yea for the good old Rusty-Darrell days!!

August 26, 2007 at 4:24 pm
(23) Harry says:

Always look forward to Bristol night
race. Old bull ring racing of the good
old days. Nascar is doing its best to
lose its die-hard loyal fans. What happened to the much anticipated ending
and who was gong to victory lane.
Bristol is now just a ho-hum racetrack
with nothing but a memory of what racing
used to be.
ESPN needs to take lesson from FOX on
broadcasting. Cutting away for commercial break during last 10 laps of
the Busch race was a joke.

August 26, 2007 at 6:02 pm
(24) Lloyd says:

Seems like we had this discussion many time b4. NASCAR is out for the sponsors and the big bucks. Maybe they should have a retro race. DW, Mark, Rusty, Kyle, etc. in 1970’s cars at Daytona. However, I think the new NASCAR will soon have Danica Patrick in a Go-Daddy Honda competing against other INDY car racers and little left of it’s stock car roots.

August 26, 2007 at 7:31 pm
(25) MJ says:

I never thought a race at Bristol could be so boring and what a disappointment. I hate races where you know exactly who going to win the race. I wonder if some of those motors have been tampered with. Look at the speed which Kurt won with, what with that?

I hated it.

August 26, 2007 at 7:49 pm
(26) bryan says:

MJ maybe he had a stronger engine, maybe he drove alot better, maybe his car handled better of which made his car go faster, maybe he left his foot off the brake, or maybe his chipmunks didn’t get as tired as the rest!! Conspiracies – oh brother.

Yes it was boring so much for the old bristol. First cookie cutter drivers, then the tracks, the cot bricks and now bristol. People wanted change and you got it.

August 26, 2007 at 10:21 pm
(27) Linda says:

Thanks to Brian France for the future downfall of Nascar…the COT – Car or Tank…the old Bristol as we knew it is gone, I would demand my ticket money back, what a boring worthless race…I am afraid to see what will happen at my favorite track…Talladega…

August 27, 2007 at 10:18 am
(28) Holly says:

I was at the race and was a little disappointed. I have been going for about 10 years and this was by far the most tame race i’ve seen there. Seeing the side by side and 3 wide racing was great but I really missed the bumping and banging we usually get to see there. In past races most cars finished with some type of damage or donuts on the side of their cars – this race most cars finished without a scratch on them! I want my old Bristol back!!!

August 27, 2007 at 10:37 am
(29) Denny says:

I went to the race, sorry, but they have ruined a unique sporting event.I agree with most of the comments, it was just boring. They may still sell out for a few years, but if they don’t reverse some things, tickets will be easy to come by

August 27, 2007 at 10:44 am
(30) Earl says:

Great point by Willy:

The coverage was terrible. What ever happened to showing the line-up after pit stops. You had to wait 5-6 laps to find out where everyone was at.

I didn’t even think of it until now, but it did get confusing at times. ESPN really needs to look at their performance on this one.

August 27, 2007 at 11:07 am
(31) Sven says:

I had the race on while working on the puter. The commercials caught my interest more than the race. I have an idea though. What if somebody started a series of racing with barely modified stock automobiles driven by down-to-earth regular guys? They could run on challenging little tracks requiring hard-nosed tactics and appeal to the American working class. I doubt Crown Royal would pay for that though, huh?

August 27, 2007 at 11:19 am
(32) Steve says:

I loved going to this race every year and now I’m not sure I will return. It’s gone from a bull ring to a bore ring.

Hate it!

August 27, 2007 at 11:27 am
(33) Saillfish says:

The only way we are ever going to get though NASCARS thick stupid heads that they suck are to quit buying tickets. They have trashed a sport that I truly enjoyed. Are we going to just roll over and take it? And Yes, ESPN sucked!

August 27, 2007 at 11:30 am
(34) Hater says:

All I got to say is CHANGE IT BACK!!!!! and that ESPN and Rusty SUCK

August 27, 2007 at 11:46 am
(35) Lloyd says:

Hater Rusty doesn’t suck as a color commentator. It’s the format. The problem is ESPN is more interested in promoting ESPN than covering any sport. How many times will I see the cop get the cat mascott out of the tree during any one ESPN program? Remember ESPN is part of ABC and ABC is owned by a Mickey Mouse Company.

August 27, 2007 at 12:02 pm
(36) Nutzabout#9 says:

Of course, I was beyond thrilled the way Kahne ran the lead for 300+ laps!! His fuse was lit from the Busch win and IMO he would’ve won the Cup if not for MW#55. His blocking was beyond reprehensible. As for boring … I don’t have a strong recollection of a prior Bristol race to compare. So standing alone, the race was good enough for me, but when you’re driver is runnging in all the good air, it’s not gonna be a bad race. It was a crappy as hell finish, though. THAT was as ho-hum as it gets. Them COTs looked purdy under them lights, tho.

August 27, 2007 at 12:02 pm
(37) Dusty says:

I was seriously thinking about trying to get tickets for next years night race in Bristol….NOT!
I’ll keep my March tickets and try another racetrack. They have ruined a very entertaining knock-down, drag-em-out race that was the most popular and most difficult ticket to get. I’ll take odds that within two to three seasons on that track people will trying to give away tickets.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOring!!!!!

August 27, 2007 at 12:15 pm
(38) bulldog says:

Rusty? He need to change jobs he’s lousy at it ESPN or no ESPN he’s lousy. Kasey I wouldn’t go as far he would have won it. he don’t do so good when in traffic, his down fall.
ESPN does suck at least they believe in Equal Opputunity = race coverage = commercials coverage.

August 27, 2007 at 12:40 pm
(39) J.D. says:

Bristol WAS really exciting, I been to both Day and Nite races and it went from BEST to just midiocre. Richmond is prob. just as good now !!

August 27, 2007 at 1:39 pm
(40) Hater says:

I’m darn HAPPY with the way it turned out NO HMS or JR didn’t win

August 27, 2007 at 2:48 pm
(41) An Opinion says:

I seen the interview at the track with Edwards and I liked it when he thank the fans, that is something hasn’t been done for a while. I watch wind tunnel last night and heard the interview with Edwards. When asked about the talk is it fair (dumb question to ask him) for the cup drivers be allowed to race in the Busch, by doing that it keep out the other up and coming drivers to prove their stuff. I disliked his answer – is nothing bunch of fans out there in chairs pointing fingers at us. Then he thank the fans again, that to me was an insult. I felt by he saying that, we as fans have no right to think that. Myself I don’t watch the bush races, by the grandstands when I did seen it for a lap or two no else does either. If I wanted to see the cup drivers I watch the cup, I would like to see what new drivers are out there, myslef. That just to show he is another driver would race for nothing, A joke! I’m sure he gets paid nicely in the Busch too.

August 27, 2007 at 3:06 pm
(42) hater too bad says:

To bad hater that you feel that way, hate a person or a team because they have their stuff together than the rest.

August 27, 2007 at 3:48 pm
(43) 1969RS says:

Did not see the race as I was traveling this weekend. I did get to hear a comment on Wind Tunnel last night that the race track did produce two groove racing, but the racers made the race boring.
Do not blame the track because the drivers are being conservative. Could be too many worried about making the chase or taking someone out that is in a transfer spot to the chase.

August 27, 2007 at 4:08 pm
(44) Ron says:

When the Bush car is faster than the Cup car, we’ve got a problem. When they correct the Bush car to be slower than the Cup car, it will be like watching golf.
Woul like to see a new cot with a cross of the current car and the current cot. Say, a front end and windshield rake of the current car and moving the driver closer to the center and rear wing of the cot. Also keeping the side protection of the cot and the ride height and O.A. height of the current car. Make it fast, stable and safe.

August 27, 2007 at 7:42 pm
(45) ed says:

lets see what happens next year when goodyear brings a softer tire

August 29, 2007 at 4:41 pm
(46) ceg424 says:

This was the track I would pay $300 a tic for. Not after going to this august night race it was BORING!! They really messed up a good thing Not worth my travels IT SUCKED. What s SHAME!!!!!!!

August 29, 2007 at 10:55 pm
(47) Rob says:

That was the night race? Seemed more like Happy Hour. Yawn.

August 30, 2007 at 7:37 pm
(48) Michael says:

The Chase and the COT have ruined Bristol. I’ll wait until Talladega and decide if I’m through with the Nextel Cup Series in it’s present state. I have always looked foward to Bristol, the contact, the tempers and its all been snuffed out.I have no desire to follow it anymore. The cot has produced ho hum racing for the most part so i think Nascar is in trouble next year. Who knows what will happen at Talladege, the only configuration the cot hasint raced on but i have no reason to believe it wont be another snooze fest. At least i still have my old races to watch.

August 31, 2007 at 4:22 pm
(49) Lana says:

I just returned from seeing all 3 races at Bristol. Personally, it was one of the best races I have seen and I have been to a lot of other tracks. Seems there’s just a lot of whining, stop and enjoy the race, ESPN does suck and I am sorry for you true rce fans that had to put up with that on TV..If I only could go to one race a year it would still be BRISTOL , but as a true race fan I watch them all and enjoy evry minute and don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect. If NASCAR is trying to cookie cutter tracks and cars, then enjoy what we have now!!!!!

September 2, 2007 at 12:41 pm
(50) george says:

i guess i’m with the majority that think they ruined bristol.i couldn’t wait to go see a race there, not any more.can we say BOYCOTT!!!! p.s theres always top fuel

September 4, 2007 at 3:03 pm
(51) Bob says:

Lana give that “a true race fan” crap a break. That is pure nonsence if a person likes racing then they are true race fan. This deal you put out a true race fan likes everything is also crap.

August 24, 2008 at 3:12 pm
(52) Dave says:

Kyle likes ti cry about the bump, But he likes to give it.. Shut up Kyle……………
