Is the Brickyard 400 Truly One of the Best?

Wednesday July 25, 2007
This weekend the NEXTEL Cup stars will gather at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. There seem to be two schools of thought about this weekend's race. One is that this is one of the biggest races on the calendar. The other common opinion is that the Brickyard 400 is all about the hype and the racing really isn't that good.

Which side of this argument do you agree with? Is the Brickyard 400 a must-see event or a chance to catch a NASCAR nap?

(1) Janelle says:

I was born and raised here and when Nascar came here in 1994 my father and I were ecstatic, until we sat through it. The problem is you can’t see the cars until they are right in front of you, then you wait another minute or so then you see them again, for a second. They should have the Nextel (will always be Winston Cup) series race at the same place as Busch Series. IRL or whatever they changed it to now. That would be an awsome race and it would make me want to start going again.

When MotoGP arrives that will be something but as for Nascar once they get distance on each other its time for a sunday nap ! the place is just to dam big .Now go over to check out the busch race at IRP and for sure you got a good race !

I would never miss a race. I am not a fan of ESPN. I hope they don’t have them next year.

(5) Indy Bob says:

Leo Z.. The place is big, but so is Daytona. Problem is with Indy, you are limited to viewing only portions of the track. (depending a lot on your seating and price of same). I enjoyed 2 races there in person since I had pretty good seats. The last race I addended, I litterly did go behind the stands and lay in the grass for a while. I was low in the new stands at the end of the back straight. The whole time they came down the backstraight, all I saw was the blur of the catch fence. Cars then flew by and I saw them for about 200 yard. Then they disappered behind the wall in the 3rd turn. Bummer.

I attended the very first Brickyard 400 and the atmosphere was the TanFastic, but as far as watching the race it was almost impossible because of the lack of good seats. All you could see was a glimps of the cars when they were almost directly in front of you.

Well, the way y’all describe the Indy track, I will never see a live race there. It may be racing, but if I can’t see the action, it’s just noise to me. What’s the point of being there?
Now I’m kinda dreadin’ what’s televised on Sunday. Steve’s Aug 03 recap makes it sound like another boring road course race.

The brick yard is almost alwayse a snoozer. Hasn’t been a good race as far as NASCAR goes for a while. It’s not a cookie cutter though but it’s about as exciting as california. Let’s go short track racin’!

(9) John says:

A decent race but definitely one to watch on TV and not at the track. NASCAR is at its best on short tracks. Big billing because it’s Indy but just an OK race. NASCAR hypes Daytona but those crippled cars are just silly and the race is always a snoozer. I’m close to PIR and just love it there. Give me a mile less any day!

It’s Hype!!!! The only reason people will pay and go to that race so they can say Hey I BEEN to that race. Where as I can say Hey I SEEN the WHOLE race on TV free. It’s just another race no big deal. The name what people want. Just like where I work we make a very popular name brand product along side with the very same product in a different container sometimes put a different dye for color for different customers and it doesn’t sell as well because of the name although they sell it cheaper. We even get complaints from end users (consumers) about it, and they say the name brand product is better. Just like the can vegetables, you buy different labels same company. Just the name people buy for the most part.

(11) Becky says:

I think the Brickyard is a place to take a nap. You cannot see the cars that well on the track, and with the amount of money it costs to go to these races, I would rather watch it on tv.

(12) Leo Z says:

Good point Indy Bob ,I myself have been to Indy 4 times at the flag stand and its limited viewing even from there .With the IRL car the speed makes for more exciting racing .Its always the last laps there anyway !!

Indy is a wonderfull place to visit and play Golf.. Very poor race track for NASCAR. Maybe they should try the road course?

(14) Gerry says:

NOOOOOO more road courses for nascar two are bad enough. Indy not much good for any race when you can’t see all of the races, It does not matter how fast the cars are, cant see all heck with it.

(15) Jeff G says:

Been to a handful NASCAR races all over, about 6 at Indy, It always depends where u sit, with scanner, We have like high in the Turn, get the correct seat you can see 1/2 the track and see who is catching who, watch for different lines of attack. I have been to 19 Indy 500’s 4 F1 events,No it is not a Bristol, Thanks for picking bad seats leaving good ones for me.(just kidding) low or on the straight away anywhere is les than perfect. Great event and venue to watch.

(16) Amazing says:

Spend that kind of money and can’t see all of the race, well maybe 1/2 of the track with a scanner? No thanks I do just fine in the confort of my own home. These people that spend that kind of money to see less than 1/2 of the race so they can say I been to Indy probaly the ones they spend hours some times days in line to be first to see a movie or buy a book, or buy a electronic gizzmo. Most of us watch the whole race at home, or wait a day or two, three to buy the book, watch the movie or buy that gizzmo. In other words I have better use in my time and money. To each to their own I guess, and it takes all kinds. It does give us something to laugh about.

Went to the Indy 500 years ago. Got bored and spent most of the race touring the Indy museum. Race is better watched on TV.
