What is the Difference Between Driver Points and Owner Points?
Monday July 23, 2007
One confusing part of the NASCAR point system is that there are in fact two separate point systems. The driver points and car owner points are calculated separately and used for different purposes. In order to fully understand NASCAR it helps to understand how car owner points are calculated and why both systems are important to NASCAR fans.
Here is a review of the similarities and differences between NASCAR's driver and car owner point systems.

Hi Steve. Hope you’re having a great day. Just wanted to say I think the two separate point systems are rediculous. They should use only one point system, based on the driver.
Steve you picked a crazy topic here . I to this day dont get it when it comes to Nascar ,F1 yes ! I say that because of the teams and technology . With Nascar the rules make it kind of cookie cutter ,im mean look at jeffs fender .032 .Plus teams with more then one car have more resources .I say keep it on the track with the drivers . Find a reward for owners some other way !!
Hello Steve, you havent had a post in a few days. I guess the OFF-WEEK in NASCAR gave you an week-off also. I hope you had a nice vacation. Anyway I tend to agree with the first 2 comments here. I think it is ridiculous having different point systems. I will go farther and say “IN MY OPINION–only” I think the CHASE or play-offs in NASCAR is absurd, and now I find out that NHRA is doing a similar thing. C R A Z Y
Well here is my promised recap of the NBS race at GATEWAY last Saturday. I have to think it was probably boring on TV but in live mode it was thrilling. There was lots and lots of racing in the middle of the field. The big wreck on lap 98 coming out of turn 2 actually started when they was running 4 abreast down the front stretch. Scott Wimmer cut a RF tire around lap 50 going in to turn 1 (RIGHT IN FRONT OF US) and his car didnt even wiggle. This is strange also. Carl Edwards claims to have had an ill handling car, however his car was LITERALLY the only car on the track who ran all night long and did not get CHERRY RED brake rotors. Anyway, there was alot of NON-TELEVISED action I hope BRICKYARD is as exciting Sunday, I will be there YAY!! I hope KASEY finally gets lucky. or maybe MATT. Im thinking it will be an HMS day though, Tony would be a safe bet too. Lets all pray for SAFETY thanks all
hey steve, aren’t driver points, and not owner points, used for the starting line-up when qualifying is cancelled?
Nope, it is definitely owner points.
Check out the starting lineup from Daytona a couple of weeks ago. When qualifying was rained out Mark Martin started ninth. Even though he was 20th in driver points his car owner was ninth since the car raced a few events that Mark didn’t.
If im not mistaken thats how Boris Said got sent home ! What a shame …
get rid of the owner points, it’s unfair. go back to the way it was.you quailify on you racing abiility. was good enoguh over 20 yrs ago. so, why not now. there’s been alot of really good drivers that haven’t gotten to race….. when they should get to to race. thank you very much.
