NEXTEL Cup Stars Roll Into Chicagoland

Thursday July 12, 2007
2007 USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland SpeedwayThis Sunday the NEXTEL Cup series visits Chicagoland Speedway for the 2007 USG Sheetrock 400. Last year Jeff Gordon punted Matt Kenseth out of the lead with less than five laps remaining to steal the unpopular victory.

Matt Kenseth has dominated this race for the last two years but has yet to come away with the Chicagoland victory. Will this finally be his year? Maybe last year's pole sitter Jeff Burton can improve upon his second place finish in 2006 to take the win? Who is your pick for this Sunday's race?

(1) 1969rs says:

Sure would be nice to see Matt win close to home. Guess you could call this his home track. Closeest to Cheeseland.
If any of you are going to the race, find some time to find Jeno’s East Pizza. It is by far the best Chicago style pizza on the face of the earth.

(2) Leo Z says:

I live by the track and would like to see 1. Casey Mears 2.Jeff Burton or 3.Kasey Kahne win.It would be fun to see out of all of us who picks the winner ! Best out of three picks wins ..No prize LOL.

July 12, 2007 at 12:45 pm
(3) Nutzabout#9 says:

I agree, Kasey Kahne could be right up there for a win. {Wink}
A “D” shaped track ought to be cool. What’s the excitement gonna be here? Kennseth getting knocked out by … #20, #42, #??? LOL

July 12, 2007 at 4:38 pm
(4) Lori R says:

JEFF GORDON OF COURSE!

July 12, 2007 at 8:35 pm
(5) Eric says:

Junior is due and he needs it to break the streak and help secure a chase position before he leaves DEI. Lets just hope no one knocks him out of race(again)

July 12, 2007 at 8:55 pm
(6) Lauren says:

I so can’t wait, the race is scheduled to be on ABC. I am the one without cable TV of any kind. So this Saturday will be a real treat, Go Tony, Go Dale! And yes, I love the commericials!

July 12, 2007 at 10:02 pm
(7) Tyler20 says:

It’s going to be Great Weather for once,
Last few years it was almost 100…It could be Jeff Gordons Day..he runs good there.Im still cheering For Tony…He has appoligized to the 11 …He’s been making me mad latley but he’s still a great guy when he has his helmet put away…I think his helmet might be to tight causing him to do stupid things..But I still like him..Go Tony

July 13, 2007 at 12:33 am
(8) Smoke62 says:

I agree Tyler20. If I thought it would help Tony think any clearer, I’d go out and buy him a bicycle helmet to wear when he races.

July 13, 2007 at 12:45 am
(9) Vol6-01 says:

Dont you think its time the Old Timer.. Mark Martin won a race, after the preformance the man has had part time. Most people couldnt be in 18th place after missing 6 races this year…!

July 13, 2007 at 12:57 am
(10) Smoke62 says:

It would be nice to see Mark win. The man has class.

July 13, 2007 at 1:20 am
(11) Leanna says:

Hi everyone, 1st. Lauren, it will be the last race for TNT Sunday. Not ABC. I am voting for Jeff Gordon, Jimmy,& Jr. So lets see who wins this.

July 13, 2007 at 4:17 am
(12) 9 fan says:

YEEHOOOO!!! A “D” shaped track (BOY THATS A FIRST HUH) and identical cars (not sure if its a COT race or not–either way the cars are identical) nice weather.. Sounds like another THRILLING NASCAR “SPRINT” At least NASCAR breaks things up a bit (a yeah right) no cookie cutter stuff here. anyway GO KASEY

July 13, 2007 at 6:47 am
(13) Modoc says:

It would be pretty neat if #8 got the win! Just a small token (stick-it) to his ster-mom. Go JR.

July 13, 2007 at 7:01 am
(14) BWeberSux says:

Jimmie Johnson has not finished worse than sixth at Chicago. He is my selection for this race, not because I am a fan, but because of his skill and proven track record here. Junior will not win. He will live up to his mediocrity when he is with Hendricks next year and the excuse for the Junior fans will be that he needs to gel with his new team.

July 13, 2007 at 9:41 am
(15) tommy says:

YEA!!!!!!!!!!!! Another cookie-cutter track!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 13, 2007 at 10:27 am
(16) 1969ra says:

Thx Smoke62, I just got this visual of Tony wearing a bicycle helmet in the car. LOL!

July 13, 2007 at 10:28 am
(17) Lauren says:

It’s on ABC tomorrow, pre-race coverage starts at 2 and the race begins at 3. Not unless my local newspaper got it wrong. Maybe someone could answer this for me, here when I mention NASCAR, some people act like you said a bad word. This is my first year watching, I love it. Looking forward to ordering cable tv soon.

July 13, 2007 at 10:35 am
(18) 1969RS says:

Just checked NASCAR.com Lauren. It states TNT with a 2:30 eastern start for coverage. Sorry.

July 13, 2007 at 10:40 am
(19) Patty says:

Lauren, maybe when you mention NASCAR those people have read some of the comments on this site, and think it is a sport for immature kids. On the other hand, they think car racing is beneath them while heading towards the bowling ally. LOL Who knows I think the same when hear people like hockey (nothing more than a fight on ice).

July 13, 2007 at 10:42 am
(20) Go for it Jimmie J says:

Hey just have TWO TV’s side X side to make sure you don’t miss it. LOL I know, I know there is one in every crowd. It’s friday.

July 13, 2007 at 11:27 am
(21) Lauren says:

My local newspaper here states 3p.m. NASCAR Racing Busch Series, USG Durock 300 (Live) and it ends at 6. Is this something different, I checked TNT and there is nothing listed. I guess I’ll just turn it on tomorrow and see what’s on. Anymore it could be a mis-print! Thank’s!

July 13, 2007 at 11:39 am
(22) Steve McCormick says:

The Busch race is on ABC on Saturday.
The Cup race is on TNT on Sunday.

Both are live from Chicagoland.

July 13, 2007 at 1:25 pm
(23) Smoke62 says:

Hey 1969ra, just be glad I didn’t suggest him putting on tights!!!! LOL

July 13, 2007 at 3:08 pm
(24) 1969RS says:

Allright Smoke62, I was just going to have lunch. Now I have that visual in my head.
I am no longer hungry.

I do not care how many Subway sandwiches Tony eats, tights….no way.

July 13, 2007 at 3:21 pm
(25) Hater says:

I hope all the HMS cars hit the wall on the first lap! And that goes for the newest member also

July 13, 2007 at 3:32 pm
(26) bye says:

Hater, I think your mommy calling you, Or maybe that’s the problem

July 13, 2007 at 3:54 pm
(27) hater mommy-you want him for free? says:

Yes maybe hater would that be neat even neater they would take your driver out also.It be way too cool.

July 13, 2007 at 3:58 pm
(28) Hater says:

I hope they do !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was an 8 fan.

July 13, 2007 at 4:00 pm
(29) #3 Fan says:

I agree with Hater, now that JR went to the dark side

July 13, 2007 at 4:08 pm
(30) Smoke62 says:

Hater what’s the deal? You no longer like Dale Jr. because he wanted to try to improve his chances of getting better? He still drives a Chevy, You pulled for him as a driver, he’s still the same driver, just so happens someone else will be his boss (I agree with Jr’s move there) He hasn’t changed, why bail now?

July 13, 2007 at 4:12 pm
(31) Smoke62 says:

Just because you pull for a certain driver doesn’t necessarily mean you have to pull for the whole team.

July 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
(32) Hater says:

Smoke62………I could careless what he drives, JR could have gone anywhere other than to HMS. Yes right now they are the best I have to give them that. But I CAN’T STAND DIAPER BOY GORDON or his little brother Jimmy………..

July 13, 2007 at 4:20 pm
(33) Smoke62 says:

The man still carries his father’s legacy. He has class, just as his father did. Why did you pull for him in the first place, because he drove for Tereasa…. I think NOT!!!

July 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
(34) Smoke62 says:

Believe me..I’m no Hendricks fan either, but I do like Dale Jr.

July 13, 2007 at 4:29 pm
(35) Smoke62 says:

I don’t like him because he drove for Tereasa, or Budweiser, or DEI for that matter. I like him because he drives like his dad did. He races hard and takes everything in stride. You rarely see him get too upset. The qualities you need to succeed.

July 13, 2007 at 4:35 pm
(36) Hater says:

I agree I’m not happy with Tereasa, and I don’t drink Budweiser, none of that matters. As #3 fan said he went to the darkside. As long as he is @ HMS I will not pull for him

July 13, 2007 at 4:44 pm
(37) Smoke62 says:

You pulled for the man and he could do no wrong, then ahhh….out of the blue he joins the enemy. WOW!!! what a revelation. I can understand how your pride is crushed. Grow up, get over it. He’s not racing with your best interests in mind. He’s racing with HIS best interests in mind.

July 13, 2007 at 4:46 pm
(38) BIG RED WOODY says:

JOHNSON… GORDON… OR TONY STEWART!
****************************************

I THINK I MISSED THE ISSUE ABOUT JR. MOVING OVER TO HENDRICK.
THINK THAT STINKS FOR A FEW REASONS….
1) NOT A JR. FAN!
2) THINK IT WILL TAKE “MORE” AWAY FROM THE SPORT EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THEY ALL WILL GO FOR THE WIN…THEY WILL HELP EACH OTHER UNTIL THEY GET THERE! WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO SEE THEM BRING UP/IN ONE OF THE LITTLE/NEW GUYS IF THEY NEEDED A DRIVER CHANGE.

I’M A HENDRICK FAN BUT IS
HENDRICK-NASCAR RACING GONNA BE NEXT AFTER “SPRINT”…?

(39) bye says:

Hater what is the dark side? Watching too many movies? are you one of those people that wait days in line to watch a movie? Maybe you need to have somebody to change your diaper. You must not been much of a jr fan. Still as I said before you no longer like jr, maybe they take your new driver out when they hit the wall.

July 13, 2007 at 5:42 pm
(40) dale jr fan says:

Look! If you are a true fan of dale Jr. or any other driver for that matter. you don’t chose them of there car or team. you are for them cause of what the are and what they stand for. if they are a great drive or not. that’s your chose. don’t just drop jr. cause of him going to hms. if you are his fan then be with him no matter what…..

July 13, 2007 at 6:18 pm
(41) GoMark says:

Mark Martin showed this year that he can do it his way. He was at the top when he decided to continue his partial racing season and is still in the Top 20. I hope that he can somehow make the chase after missing all of these races. Maybe with the above suggestions of wrecking cars, he can get back towards the top. Was a fan during the Valvoline days, wore my Viagra items proudly even though I never used the product (no problem there) and will still pull for him as a driver even though I am a Ford fan!!! Get over all of your issues and enjoy your favorite driver, idiots!!!

July 13, 2007 at 10:44 pm
(42) GoRace says:

I was never a Jr. fan until recently…..I liked the class he showed through this change…..and especially of taking away any excuses of failing to win a championship……that’s putting it out there…..HMS is considered the best right now….Now that’s CLASS. I also consider HMS to be a class organization….mainly because they have many loyal people working for them for many years…..at least two of them are working right now as team managers…..these guys used to sweep the garage…..I like people who loyal to their employees.

(43) audry says:

tony is going to win

July 14, 2007 at 12:10 am
(44) 9 fan says:

Funny how every comment thread turns into a JR — or — Gordon fan. My son is an avid JR fan. Most of our family is not a real HMS fan, however I give HMS all the credit they are class. the only thing that really bothers me about JR going to HMS is this.!! Most every team has had their year or 2 then they fizzle off for a few years. Jr made this move to enhance his career, I just hope that HMS in general dont fizzle off now and JR ends up being the laughing stock. I personally feel that GINN racing is the ones to watch. IE. MARK MARTIN!!!! GINN no doubt has the stuff. GO KASEY

July 14, 2007 at 12:13 am
(45) william sharp says:

Sorry I have been to chicago since it opend,,,, harvic,,newman, gordon,jr,, stewart all are good picks…

July 14, 2007 at 6:21 pm
(46) MURPHY says:

Smoke62, Dale SR was a great driver but he didn’t have a lot of class. He was down and dirty when neccesary. Jr is a good driver and someday might be great, but right now he is living off of his name.Only time will tell.

July 14, 2007 at 6:54 pm
(47) get real says:

Shoot, What does Murphy know what class is, by his past comments. Murphy and tlabontefan need to get together have a beer together someday. Any driver gets dirty when they need to be.

July 14, 2007 at 10:28 pm
(48) goRace says:

9 fan you say that GINN no doubt has the stuff to win.

I believe if you check it out…..they get their ENGINE stuff from Hendrick Motor Sports.

July 15, 2007 at 2:32 am
(49) 9 fan says:

gorace you are absolutely right, so does most other CHEVY teams, CHILDRESS builds engines for themselves and DEI, but as I said the cars are identical that includes engines these days. NASCAR doesnt allow anyone to change things up. OR investigate the “GRAY” area. But you are correct I didnt explain myself real well. I was more-or-less speaking of the GINN personnel. Yes I know HMS is on top of their game right now, I was speaking of past performances and how most every team gets great, then bad, then great again, etc. Everyone has ups-and-downs I just simply hope for JRs sake that HMS is not going to get bad again for a short spell. Thank You goRace for correcting me.

July 15, 2007 at 11:01 am
(50) famya says:

just cause jr went to the other side dont mean u cant root for him, he’s still driving and wants to win no matter who he drives for

July 15, 2007 at 2:04 pm
(51) Smoke62 says:

Hey MURPHY, I’m not sure you know what class is. Yea, he might have raced dirty sometimes, but every driver out there does. He didn’t whine and cry like alot of drivers today do, he just went out the next time and took care of business.

July 22, 2007 at 6:48 am
(52) lance750 says:

Allow JR to make a decision of his own for god’s sake! I think going to HMS will be a forward-moving and experience-gaining step for JR. Irregardless of what people’s opinions are of the organization he’s joining. It has a formula for success and the one’s that can’t or don’t will always be trying to catch up. Controversy as we see here adds spice to conversations but does nothing to change facts. Best wishes to JR in his endeavor.
