Kurt Busch Penalized For Dover

Friday June 8, 2007
NASCAR announced the penalty today for Kurt Busch's dangerous driving on pit road during last week's Autism Speaks 400 in Dover. After an on-track incident Kurt Busch pulled next to Tony Stewart on pit road to express his displeasure with Stewart's driving. One of Stewart's crew members was looking at the damage on Stewart's car and was almost hit when Kurt pulled along side.

Kurt was not allowed to return to the race after the incident. In addition, NASCAR has taken away 100 driver points, 100 car owner points from Roger Penske and issued a $100,000 fine. This infraction drops Kurt Busch from 11th back to a tie for 18th in points.

(1) RAYMAN says:

KNOWING THEY COULD GET PENALIZED 100 POINTS MAKES ALL THE DRIVERS THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY REACT. THIS IS GOOD. TAKING POINTS AWAY HURTS MORE THAN TAKING MONEY OUT OF THERE POCKETS.

(2) 1969rs says:

As much as many of us think he should be penalized more, the penalty is consistant with previous incidents that were simular with other drivers.
I think that is all we can ask of Nascar, is consistancy.
I think Kevin Harvick mentioned a while back that it was only a matter of time before Kurt Busch screwed up, and he was right.
Now, if he pulls something stupid like this again, Nascar does need to take the penalty to the next level.
What disapoints me is how some of todays drivers are not appreciative of the position they are in. There are tons of talented drivers across not just the U.S., but the world that would love and appreciate the oppertunity these drivers have today. Then to see some of them do stupid things like this, you’d like to slap them along side one of there recently tucked ears and tell them, “What are you thinking?”
Hopefully Roger Penske has done just that.

(3) joe stinker says:

Yes there is tons of talent out there, myself I don’t care about the rest of the world, they have their own races. There is tons of talent right here in the US. Only difference they not the hollywood type looking,Nascar wants the drivers be cookie cutter type pleasing to the camera.

(4) 1969rs says:

Joe, you are right on. I remember when I use to like victory circle interviews. Now they are boring and the same stuff spewing that you here during to many commercials.
You are correct on plenty of talent right here in the US. My point was that there are a ton of people that would appreciate the chance that many of todays driver are taking for granted.

(5) no joke101 says:

I agree that Kurt receive a fine, but what I don’t understand is how a driver like Tony Stewart , who almost kills someone weekly on the track ( Like Kenseth, Newman, Edwards )never gets a penalty and claims its the fault of the other driver. I am tired of whining from drivers such as Kevin Harvick,Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson, who never own up to their mistakes. Kurt Busch apologized for the wreck between he and Stewart at the Daytona 500 and if it was anyone who was at fault, once again it was Tony! I definitly think its more dangerous to wreck someone at 200 mph than 5mph as was the speed Busch was going.
NO ,I am not a big Busch fan but I do hope he lets anger fuel his fire and kicks some Tony ***, then I’ll be sporting a #2 Tee shirt at every race I attend..

June 8, 2007 at 11:42 am
(6) joe stinker says:

no joke 101, that is a problem you don’t understand. Tony almost kills someone every week? good one. if you would watch nascar enough you would understand racing a little. The spoiled busch brothers are some of the dangerous drivers out there, and saying sorry everytime just don’t cut it.

June 8, 2007 at 11:43 am
(7) joe stinker says:

ps no joke 101, complaining they whine, you just got in to their league when you whine about them.

Park him for 5 races and a fine.Maybe the hothead will learn.

(10) Jim says:

Maybe after a pit crewman gets run over they will suspend a driver.

June 8, 2007 at 2:51 pm
(11) the cowboy says:

why don’t get rid of TONY STEWARD?
That is where the problem is.
How Joe Gibbs puts up with him is mind boggling.
Steward has the IQ of a turnip. Another words he is the jaw bone of an ass.

June 8, 2007 at 3:07 pm
(12) T says:

The cowboy tha tis STEWART not steward!!!!

June 8, 2007 at 3:08 pm
(13) 1969RS says:

nojoke101, I think spending $30 on a #2 Kurt Busch t-shirt would be a waste of money. At this rate, he will be out of that ride soon.

(14) nascar redneck ma says:

Was really upset when Dale Jr was fined but, feel alot better now that Busch got a comparable fine. If it’s the same for everyone, I’m good.

June 8, 2007 at 3:35 pm
(15) NSCRdale says:

Thats right Joe, alot of talent out there who would appreciate the chance at a driving job in Nascar. I’ll drive one and the whiners can have my $30K a year job. Who cares how you spell Stewart, Steward, Stupid, he’s still the biggest cry baby out there. Stewart ain’t nothing but a pudgy Ravioli eating punk who thinks he should win all races and cry’s when he don’t.

June 8, 2007 at 3:50 pm
(16) joe stinker says:

NSCRdale, nothing but a crybaby makes a oh lot more than you. Yet you are crying about him cry cry. have you not seen anybody that they think they should win everytime? You think you should make more than what you make.

June 8, 2007 at 3:58 pm
(17) 1969RS says:

I am not a Tony fan, but you take away the couple of stupid agressive moves he has made in the past few years, and he is one hell of a driver. Yes, it gets a little old when he is involved in a wreck and listening to him place the blame on the other driver, but you have to admit, when you watch the guy drive, he is a hell of a driver. If he ever learns to control his “implosions”, look out, he will be unbeatable. Then the conspiracy people will be whining about him.

(18) melanie says:

i love both busch brothers, so they make mistakes, everyone does…but i still love em both!

(19) jmower71 says:

You can see the Busch fans, the Stewart fans on this thread….. whhhaaaa whhhhaaaaa whaaaaaaaaaa … doesnt matter who it was … you do stunt like that on pit road – you deserve to sit out a race, let alone the points deduction and fines.
I dont think the penalty was stiff enough, pit guys dont need anymore danger then they have to deal with – without drivers taking out their anxiety in the pits.

June 8, 2007 at 5:09 pm
(20) 1969RS says:

So let me throw this out there….
Should Kurt Busch be fined different that Carl Edwards was at Pocono last year when he spun Tony coming into the pits? Actually, Carl put Tony’s car into an uncontrolable situation and Kurt Busch pulled up next to Tony’s car. Granted, there was a crew member on that side of the car and we do not know if Kurt had enough control to stop if the crew member would not have jumped out of the way.
But, should it have been treated different or the same?
I think we want to be more harsh with Kurt because we just do not like him, whereas Carl Edwards is a bit more likeable.

(21) Nana says:

To (nojoke101) this is not even about going 100 or 200 mph on the track it has already been shown TONY can out drive him any day, this is about almost killing a pit crew guy…pure stupidy!!!

June 8, 2007 at 6:49 pm
(22) Nana says:

oh and speaking of stupid…Hey COWBOY…its STEWART..NOT STEWARD now who has the iq of a turnip…LOL

(23) getoverit says:

What a bunch of idiots. Watch the wreck. Self explanatory whose fault it was!! Doesn’t matter. It also doesn’t matter who you are a fan of or not. The only thing that matters is BOYS controlling their tempers and keeping their self respect!!!!!

June 8, 2007 at 8:04 pm
(24) Eric says:

I don’t know about you guys but I am forced to control my temper at my job because I REPRESENT ONE COMPANY. How many Companies have their names on his car. I think I could wait till after the race and cameras were gone to release my frustrations any way I had to for the cash these people are pulling down. They should not only be ashamed but disgusted with themselves. And after Busch’s altercation with the police whichever year He left Rousch racing didn’t Penske say they allready have a contract and He(penske)was going to evaluate Busch’s behavior as a condition of honoring that contract. I bet there have been some heated words about that contract lately.

June 8, 2007 at 8:25 pm
(25) racetrack grandma says:

Folks, don’t you realize these guys are supposed to be “Professional” drivers? In any sport that means leave you temper at home.I know that things happen on the race track that don’t happen in any other sports. However Professionalism “Happens” in every sport including NASCAR. If the drivers can’t perform in that manner they don’t need to be driving in the first place.Maybe Kurt needs to be in a boxing ring or on a football field where he can express all of his agressions.

June 8, 2007 at 9:31 pm
(26) jeremy says:

emotion is what makes the sport good the way it sounds you all want to get down on the drivers that have it i say to hell with all the fines and lets let the drivers race all these rules have ruined a good sport its not racing anymore its a show nascar needs help

(29) T says:

It doesn’t matter if it was Kurt and Tony or any other driver. The stunt that was done in the pit area was dangerous and stupid. It could have cost someone their life. I think that he needs to sit out a race.
That may teach him and any other driver a lesson.

June 9, 2007 at 12:18 am
(30) Wayne says:

Some great comments by all accept the one about the accident. I cant beleive we watched the same race. First Busch was mad because he could not get around Tony and when he tried the 16 car of Biffle smacked him from behind pressuring him to try the Tony pass too late for the curv. Tony stayed high but Busch slid up and probably would have pancacked the wall if Tony’s Fender wasnt there. I cant believe that Tony was as calm as he was after what the second or was it 3rd time Busch caused him to reck? I really thought Busch was working on his ” Do you know who your talking too?” attitude. I think he got what he deserved and I think he will always be a punk just like his Brother.

June 9, 2007 at 12:27 am

I agree with you.

June 9, 2007 at 6:34 am
(32) Bruce says:

It all come’s down to the Pit road Actions..that was wrong..On the track, yes these guy’s were out to wreak from the start, but thats just Nascar Racing.Tony is a great person away from the track, doing so much for so many people..when the helmet goes on he is very serious and wants to win..whats wrong with that?…I would be the same way..who wants to finsh second…only the points boys..Tony is about winning,Thats whats special about him.
He will be one of nascar’s greatest Drivers and personalities..This I guarantee.

June 9, 2007 at 7:58 am
(33) Ken says:

Pit road junk gets crew members killed, remember thats why there is a pit road speed limit. Racing is about trying to win, the bumps and grinds are learned at saturaday night tracks around the country. Kyle B. can drive and Kurt B.
is a spoiled brat. Most of the rest are pretty darn good. It’s still fun to watch.

June 9, 2007 at 9:51 am
(34) Fred says:

First Mr. Busch was punished for his actions on pit road not for what happened on the track. What happened on the track is what use to be called racing. If you look at the replays and listen to what Kurt said after the race it was Kurt who caused the accident on the track. He expected Stewart to back off and let him pass. When Stewart didn’t, for whatever reason, they wrecked.

The Kurt Busch we saw on pit lane in Dover is the person I refer to as the old Kurt Busch, the pre-married Kurt. Since his marriage and change of teams he has calmed down quite a bit. While I am not a fan of Kurt Busch I do give him credit for trying to remake himself. With the help of his team and his wife’s has done quite well.

I neither excuse nor condone what happened on pit road at Dover. I’m sure we will hear more on this subject from the sportscasters this weekend, it’s the stuff that fills airtime. NASCAR has taken what they believe is the appropriate action for Kurts idiotic behavior. Now it is time to get back to racing

June 9, 2007 at 10:16 am
(35) paul says:

To all those Stewart haters, if you watch racing at all, it was not Tony’s fault that Busch didn’t have enough room to get in front of him. If he was a better driver, he would have realized that the hole wasn’t big enough for him to fit into. Kurt needs to apologize for the mistakes that he makes… Nobody’s fault but his own…And we all know that’s also ‘JUST RACIN’!!!

June 9, 2007 at 11:33 am
(36) ????? says:

paul what is a hater? This hater thing is just as old, stupid as the conspiracy thing that goes on here. These comments that goes on here are both funny and sad. Funny how some of you think, and sad how you people think. Paul by the way Kurt did apologize.

Tony Stewart is an aggressive driver…..how ever Bush’s spotter caused the problem. Tony was just doing what he does. If I wanted to just watch a bunch of cars driving fast I would go to the nearest highway and watch that. It’s the wrecks and the passion of the drivers that keeps me tuned…..And, Tony Stewart is a driver that has TONS of passion for what he does.

(42) joe stinker says:

Dave I do agree there are great drivers out there. I do think there are better drivers than you see on TV everyweek, But they don’t fit the cookie cutter driver profile. On Petty wins. He would never had all of those wins if they have the same rules that they have now back in his day. So comparing those wins is like compareing apples and oranges.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed with NASCAR Officals and Mike Helton. I typically never send messages to state my opinion on the judgements made by NASCAR officials, but the calls made on Kyle Busch’s actions in last week’s race are ludicrous. Did we all not see the footage of him almost killing a pit crewmember? I am furious at the decisions made by NASCAR. Busch should have been suspended for the rest of the season. This was not the first time that he made a so-called bad judgement error and called on the carpet. I guess someone will have to be murdered before the RIGHT calls are made.

(45) greenMtn says:

ya’ know what I’m a huge Stewart fan but some of the reason for where he is running in the points is self inflicted by falling for the bait and swappin paint with some of the idiot drivers on the track but thats his nature and I guess that’s probably one of the reasons I like him, but I think that he is correct in saying some of the things that he said on his program about NASCAR trying to control who’s leading and by how much with the wave of a flag, also Tony would have had a great shot at winning Daytona, as well as last week and there was another race as well, if he had’nt been taken out or taken himself out, that would have probably put him in either 1st or 2nd in the points, but then again they are’nt throwing hand-grenades or horseshoes.thanx’ from the green mountain state

(46) Steve O'Neal says:

Why is Busch being allowed to race, or even be at a NASCAR function? His latest action could have cost the life of a pit crew team member. Doesn’t matter whose team – he could have cost someone their life, and it was intentional. The heat of the moment, or competitive spirit and intensity are no excuse. Off the racetrack I believe the action would have been called attempted manslaughter, or murder. Mr. France is being remembered for what he did for NASCAR, including his personal integrity. Busch is on the verge of destroying what Mr. France dedicated his life and career to build. NASCAR should impose the stiffest penalties available, and look at legal actions against this driver. If NASCAR cannot seem to get the job done, then I have a suggestion – NASCAR officials and administrators should report to a meeting room, and allow the other drivers and pit crew members meet with Busch privately. I bet there would be a swift and sure resolution to this matter. NASCAR has failed to support and protect those who make this sport what it is.
I am a shocked, and disappointed fan.

Nascar is starting to become a joke. Robbie Gordon blows a tire and debris flies, caution comes out. Jimmy Johnson blows a tire, debris flies, no caution. Why? Maybe it’s because Gordo finally made it back to the front because of a short pit. If this continues, I won’t be watching anymore.

Kurt Busch should be fired. Tony Stewart isn’t my fav driver, but I’ve come to respect his passion for racing. At least he doesn’t spew the PC tripe as much as other drivers.
As for the cautions at Pocono, I was dumbfounded. Debris is obviously flying off of Robbie’s car and it takes them a good while to drop the yellow flag. JJ’s flat leaves crap all over the track, but no caution? And 12 seconds is one heckofa margin for yellow to drop and presto, Gordon’s the winner. Sucks for Newman.
There should be attention on who makes the caution calls.

Wow! Who are all these people “dissing” Tony for aggressive driving? Or anyone else for that matter. (What’s the term? Get under them and put them into the wall?)
This is Stock Car Racing!!
It’s NASCAR for G–’s sake!
It is not some left wing, PC, elitist style of racing.
Let these complaining “yuppies” all go watch some open wheel style racing if stock car racing doesn’t agree with them.
The stock car races use to be run by old moonshine runners, for fun. Practice, so to speak, to avoid the “law” while “working”. They were men. Not performers.
They played for keeps and were very “human” in their emotional responses to fools. They “worked it out” off track after racing.
The reckless egotists were taught a solid lesson of courtesy, or else!
Some of us miss the fights after the race. NASCAR is P.C. enough already. The Liberals control the purse strings at NASCAR, it seems, now. (Just like our schools and government.)
Dale Sr.! Where are you when we need you the most.
Teresa will destroy DEI with her foolish mysticism, mourning and greed. She needs to “get over it” and get a REAL manager.
No one will ever replace Dale Sr. in NASCAR with his leadership abilities, business know how and just good common sense. A real racer! A real man.
Kurt Bush deserves what he got. EVERYTHING! He is really dangerous with his driving, so called, “style”. He even wrecks his teammates, intentionally. Wow! What a jerk. Good riddance I say.
