Dale Earnhardt Jr. Leaving DEI

Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced today that he is leaving Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the 2007 season. Dale had been working with team owner Theresa Earnhardt to work out a majority ownership deal for the team that his father founded. Those efforts have apparently failed and Dale has decided to leave DEI.

Theresa is making a big mistake. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is the most popular driver in NASCAR how many years running??? He also is one of the best drivers in NASCAR, just not working with good equipment this year. I am sure Budweiser will take their sponsorship and follow him—they’d be crazy not to. She is being greedy and should give him the controlling interest he deserves by birthright if by nothing else.
Theresa, you call yourself a business person? I call you a knucklehead for letting Junior walk. DEI will never never recover from Junior’s leaving. You might as well have a fire sale now before the equipment is obsolete.
Welcome to the New DEI Museum! That is what Theresa wanted! Once JR. is gone so is Budweiser and most of the crews( Tony E Jr) etc. I guess she will have to charge an admission to see Jr’s cars and every other because Trurex is gone next Menard whats left Dale Sr. Grandkid who’s what 17 years old? I say good for Jr. I believe the business was meant to be with him & his brother & sister’s anyway. Hopefully it will help produce the results he wants… championships. It would be neat to see him in the #3 car & RCR.

Well stupid is as stupid does, Dale Jr. hasn’t won a race in over 2 years but you know what he is still the best known driver on the circuit and sell more race memoribilia than all of the other drivers combined,Theresa must be blind as a bat not to realize that Dale Jr is a money making machine.At DEI the end is near.
Well Dale Jr. hasn’t done well at DEI for the last few years. So I don’t blame him for leaving DEI. But here is the problem I have with JR wanting 51% of DEI. Dale Sr and Theresa started that company together for the future of all “4″ kids not just Dale Jr. So if Jr. has 51% how do you spilt 49% between the 3 other kids and the wife?? I think Dale Jr. is out for him and maybe his full blooded sister and can care less about his 1/2 brother and 1/2 sister and his step-mother.
Good for Junior, I think all the Earnhardt children should have had a part of DEI. Watch out as the rumor I heard was Teresa is dating the senior Menard….. will it soon be DEI-Menard???? Will always be a #3 fan! Just not a Teresa DEI fan.

Being an Earnhardt Sr. fan with my hubby for years, I would have to say that Dale Sr. would be rolling over in his grave with the actions of Theresa.
She is making the biggest mistake in the life of DEI, without Dale Jr., DEI will crumble – something that never would have happened if Dale Sr. had anything to say about this decision. Sorry for your luck Theresa, you have just lost the race… We as many fans will go where Dale Jr. goes..

It’s a shame they couldn’t come to terms,but I truly believe Jr. could see that DEI’s continuing under the same management policies was going to relegate their cars to being second tier competitors in the long haul. I also believe he felt that he and his siblings,full or otherwise, needed more control of their future than existing circumstances allowed. Bottom line, Jr. did the right thing! Go Jr.!

I think this is a good thing JR is doing. Teresa is being a greedy B%#*H. What I would like to know did dale SR leave a will behind? RCR is the best thing now. GO DALE JR.
Richard Childress and Dale Sr. had a great relationship, professionally and personally. I would love to see that continue on with Dale Jr. My support is with the driver. Good luck and we’ll be cheering you on!

I say good for JR….Maybe he can get a ride with a Hendrick team or Joe Gibbs,I would love to see him as Jeff Gordon’s Teamate or Tony Stewart’s Team.He’s a lot better driver than what he’s showing..He needs a Top team!

The reports said He wants to go rcr later in life, and He doesn’t want JR motorsports to get too big, And He thinks he should drive Chevrolets. Hendricks has a full four car stable(not that they wouldn’t drop a lesser name to find Jr a home) but Dale likes Tony Stewart (for reasons I cant see)and Gibbs only has 2 or 3 teams right? Or as far as Chevrolet teams that could offer Dale an “opertunity”(spelling?), How about Ginn they can put a winning car together the almost have in alot of races this year. Im glad Dale Jr. has left DEI. All he wants to do is complain about how he cant compete, or win championships at DEI. Best I can remember Jr. has been in the chase every season but one. If thats the case then he has had the cars to get in chase, and that means he has had the cars to win a championship. Its DEI fault Jr. couldnt out drive the competion. What you peolple cant come to grips with is the fact that Dale Jr. doesnt have what it takes to be a Cup Champion. Let him go drive else where, and lets see who he will put the blame on next when he cant win a championship. DEI will be fine with out Jr. They werent going anywhere with him, so loosing him isnt that a big of a deal. Seems to me that if Sr. wanted Jr. to have controling interest in DEI he would have put it in his will and left it to Jr. to start with.Could be he did’nt think Jr. had what it takes to run the busness.he did’nt trust Jr. to be able to handle it.

Robbie…………..I couldnt have said it better myself. I am glad that there are actually some sane voices when it comes to junior. No one wants to state the obvious. He isn’t all that great. Most of his wins came at restrictor plate tracks. It takes guff to drive @ 200 mph for hours at a time but that doesnt make you a champion after all there are only 4 of those per year. Maybe NASCAR should throw the caution on the season now and let Junior form a new team and give him some time to get up to speed. Maybe he could win one that way. I think Jr. will be a champion owner (in one of the venues he currently owns) before he drives himself to one. There Lil E fans chew on that for a while……….

Scott, UM Sane voices? What makes you think you have a sane voice? Because you think it, and you found one person that you agree with? If you had notice, and do some critical thinking, DEI management team has not been the best for the last 5-6 years. When DEI management team screwed up a few years ago mixed up JR and Mike W. crews around, that proved fatal. DEI once a powerhouse is no longer under Theresa control. Oh yea, one more thing Hey WT, I agree with PP Theresa does own the copyright on JR name. Unless you can provide proof otherwise she gave that up in the last few days.
There’s more important things going on in the world than to worry about this. Lets get over it and move on. Time will tell.

DEI has been in business for 12 years. Had 13 different drivers in 736 races with only 23 wins by 3 drivers. 18 wins by J.R., 4 by Michael Waltrip and 1 by Steve Park. The only factor was J.R. and now he will be gone too. Not the biggest J.R. fan but the end is here for DEI sorry Dale good luck next year.
About the name game?
Records from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that soon after Dale Sr. died in a crash at the 2001 Daytona 500, the rights to Dale Jr.’s name automatically were transferred to his father’s estate. As the executor of the estate, Teresa then transferred the rights to Dale Jr.’s name to his father’s trust and eventually to herself.
Dale Jr. has said he’s in the process of getting the rights to his own name back, although that might prove difficult. To date, he has not filed any action against Teresa with the government office.

Dale and his step mother have never gotten along. His wanted to have some control of his father’s company but his step mother wouldn’t allow it and that is really dumb. I dislike Jr. so much, I would really hate to see him in Hendrick… I have a hard enough time stomaching Jimmie (and I’m a Gordon fan fyi). The only reason anyone likes Jr. anyway is because of who his dad is, the fact that he died, and because his name is *DALE* Earnhardt Jr.

Im not a fan of Dale Jr. but I do wish him all the best on his move. I never cared for Dale Sr and how he got away with the things he did on the track but after his passing Nascar was never the same. For someone I did not like I missed the feeling he gave me when he was on the track. Maybe Dale Jr. might fill that spot one day? Max Siegel was hired for one reason and one reason only and that was to keep Dale Jr. at DEI and he failed. Theresa was the reason Siegel failed. Dale Earnhardt Jr. driving the #18 car for Joe Gibbs would be sweet. I still root for Bobby Labonte even though he drives a dodge, old habits. I have been a Bobby Labonte fan since 95. But my main driver since 2005 has been #11 Denny Hamlin.

I found those two articles in about 2 minutes, so you might want to do a little research before condemning someone else. Maybe Im not completely adament about this subject. Just a thought here, but maybe WORKING with family (especially a parent/child/spouse) might be the reason that DEI has been failing some. Maybe Teresa or Jr. valued the mother/son relationship more than the business. (Yes I know they have been RUMORED to not get along well) But maybe Teresa -and/or Jr – has decided that the family togetherness just became more important, and a break from the business might help improve that FAMILY quality. I know JR was demanding 51% which leads us to believe that the BUSINESS was the most important thing to him. But maybe this whole garbage was a very twisted or misinterpreted way to get closer.
Either way I wish the best for DEI and for JR. And now that they are apart (in 2008) they may get close, and Jr will undoubtedly do well. Teresa is not dumb either, she will likely do OK also. GO KASEY

never did this before, but, i’m a fan of sr.s and thien jr’s. i think it’s a shame that dale jr is leavive dei, but, i think that jr will do well anywhere he goes. i do recommend that all purchase on dei merchandise stop and let mrs. e figure out where she has a 120 million co. to sell, more like a used car dealer, and rags for sell.

I have become a jr fan in recent years. He is a class act in every way. He is an excellent racecar driver and I believe given the opportunity he will be as good or better than his dad. I think all of the children should leave dei and form their own team. I would like to see Kelley, Kerry, and Dale Jr. together and purchasing their engines from Hendrick motors.
I think that DEI will not last withour Jr. I think that Truex will follow Dale and then that will be the end of DEI. Sr. widowed wife is making a big mistake by allowing this to happen. It was his Dad’s company and it should go to Jr. as part of the Earndhart legacy.Theresa should just give him the 51% he want to keep Sr. dream alive. I dont really like Jr. But I dont not like him either. I am kinda neutral. But I think that he will go on and that DEI will shrivel up and die. It may take a little time to do that but it will happen. It is really unfortunate.

You make a company something big from absolutely nothing & because you don’t want to give part of it away, you are greedy!?! Jr. wants 51% of a company that was built from scratch by Teresa & Sr. and oh, what about his 3 siblings?? Jr. fans need to realize that just because he has his father’s name doesn’t mean everything should be handed to him. If his father & Teresa hadn’t made the name, “Dale Earnhardt Sr.” famous, “Dale Earnhardt Jr.” wouldn’t mean a thing. The birthright argument means nothing when a founding partner is still alive & even after she is gone, he should only be entitled to 25%. DEI was built without Jr. & it will survive after he is gone!

The main reason junior wanted 51% is so he can get what is his. Theresa gets all the money that is made from every piece of Dale Jr. Merchandise that is sold and then gives him a part of that. If you ask me its his merchandise and he should get the money not her. If anybody is selfish its her! Who knows maybe this was just his excuse to get out of DEI too. I dont blame him for wanting his fair share or getting away from DEI hell be fine and come out on top while DEI sinks!

Once again, I think Theresa made a big mistake, but she did what she thought she had to do. When Sr. died the company should have been given to Jr. nothing to Theresa. Obviously she has no idea what to do with the company if Jr. is leaving if you ask me he should try to join RCR and maybe bring back the number 3 cause he is the only person who can ever fill that seat.
Although I’m not normally one to do comments, as I find them rather “one-sided” and a never ending debate. But since everyone else who’s read this article and had their opinion shared, I decided to do so myself.
Since the end of 2004, I felt like this would happen. So it comes as no surprise to me. I’m a fan yes, but I am also a fan of many drivers in the NASCAR community.
Having been a dedicated and loyal follower of NASCAR for many years (since the early to mid 90’s), this is nothing new to me.
So with that I will add in my two cents. DEI has seemed to lost its actual competitive edge within the last two and a half years. I began noticing the tide turning after the 2004 season, when the company decided to switch its two main teams around (the 8 and 15). As the old adage goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
Unfortunately, what happened next were struggling teams that were once competitive on the track (not just at the restrictor plate tracks, either), began to fall apart. The only saving grace for the 8 team came later when DEI decided to reunite the Jr’s again.
Regardless to what anyone says or thinks, those two are bound to win Cup championships if they get with the right team who are not afraid to put forth the efforts with them. A team who will concentrate more on the racing aspects of the sport rather than the dollar signs from the merchandise sales.
The one thing that stands out for me about this whole thing is that some people still believe that Dale Jr. is all about how many shirt sales, etc. or TV commercial time slots he can do for his sponsor, rather than being sincerely focused on his ability on the track.
If it really *was* all about the money, then he would have agreed to buy the portion of the company that Teresa had offered him, which if I am correct was $51 million for 51% of the ownership. For him choosing not to do that, speaks volumes to me. How come no one has ever discussed that fact?
The bottom line that the Jr. haters seem to be missing is this, part of the contract negotiations were for him to have more control over the racing side of the competition within DEI.
With him being in those cars week in and week out, he knows more about what they all need to remain competitive with the likes of Hendrick, Gibbs, RCR and even some of the lower tier teams, like Haas and Ginn. Although it is good to see the three team cars running alittle better now than they were when the season began.
Do I believe that DEI will fall without Dale Jr. with them? No, not really. But it is going to hurt them when he leaves, considering that other than him, there are no other Earnhardts actively driving for DEI, which of course severly hurts the vision of what “Big E” had wanted for his four children.
No matter where Dale Jr decides to go, I’ll be there; just like I was when my other favorite drivers left to drive for their different teams.
Give him a break, he’s a racer and is good at what he does. Never mind the fact that he has spent his entire CUP career at DEI, just remember the huge shadow he has been in.
This will finally be his opportunity to prove not only to himself but those who doubt his abilities as a driver, he can and more likely will achieve what he is looking for. As for his decision to leave DEI, I say this “good for him” and “it’s about time”.
The QUESTION IS: Will DEI survive?
Dei will blend in with RCR, it has already started with the engine department.

i truly think he is in it for the money. i mean he whanted to completly run the company and when he couldent he ran like a little baby . i used to be adale junior fan but like i said i used to be. i mean he ran away. he was money hungry. all he does is whine. he loses blame it on the car or the pit crew.and he has engine trouble so much because he is always fighting with his pit crew.

Junior and Teresa have had a strained relationship for many many years since he was a child, so I expect Kelley to also have similar feelings, so there is a bias on both sides. Also Junior has Family from His Actual Mothers side that worked and still work for Hendrick, all he did was leave his fathers side and go to his mothers side…The facts are there. What i await is seeing if he can win a race in a HMS car, I see him up high driving the same line he has gotten accustomed to and driving the same way he has been. It wont take long to see if he gets better or if DEI really was not up to par.
