Top NASCAR Short Tracks

Tuesday May 1, 2007
NASCAR has visited two short tracks so far in 2007. This weekend the series visits Richmond which is the only short track left to see on the NEXTEL Cup schedule. Fortunately we still get six short track races each season since NASCAR runs all three short tracks twice. In all, short track races make up only 1/6 of the schedule.

I love short track racing and wish we still had North Wilkesboro. While we're at it how about adding Hickory, South Boston, or any of the hundreds of short tracks across the country old and new to the NASCAR schedule? I'd love to give up a few races at the cookie-cutter tracks for a few more short track battles.

Richmond is one of the best races nascar put’s on.It’s Fast enough to be exciting and wide enough to pass.I would love to see a few more Richmond’s being built.Go Tony,Richmond has got to be one of your Favorites.

I can’t see Nascar going to more short tracks. It is great racing but not enough seats to sell. Not that I say that in a bad context but any business runs on profit to loss ratio. More income allows more expense. You want good race teams to come to a race you have to offer a reward. The drivers can tell you till they are blue in the face the want trophies not money but untill they make a machine that turns “Grandfather Clocks in to pistons,Flywheels,Tierods,or Swaybars” team owners are going to go to money races. Can’t think of any racers off the top of my head winning races without a car owner even if it is themselves.

(3) Lou Lavison says:

NASCAR just might want to consider a non-points race in which drivers select their rides by a blind lottery.

Each driver would then have to drive the car that he drew along with the pit crew that goes with it.

This might silence the critics that say Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr. or Jeff Burton are only good because of they have the best cars and the top pit crews.

It would be fun to see if Jeff Gordon could qualify and come up with a top five in DW’s Toyota.

Of course, it might confuse the beer drinkers as to just where to throw their cans!

(5) 9 fan says:

Well Im trying real hard to not NOT say too many derogatory comments on these threads. ALTHOUGH I have several I could say. I do agree with Eric (#2) NASCAR — and all other businesses do care ONLY about the money these days. Problem is with NASCAR it is a catch 22. The short tracks do not hold as many people in the stands. HOWEVER most people seem to enjoy the short tracks more, and the stands are always filled to capacity at the short tracks. The cookie-cutter tracks are not usually filled anymore. Seems like the number of fans at the short tracks are close to the number of fans at the other tracks these days. Plus the TV audience is usually greater at the short tracks. I say WAKE UP NASCAR go short tracks, forget the cookie-cutters. I will bet the TOTAL profits at the end of the day will be the same (or close) GO KASEY

(6) Big Bob SR says:

Bristol Speedway seats 160,000, and it always sells out. How many cookie-cutter tracks sell that many tickets?

(7) jason says:

Aren’t most of the cookie cutter tracks owned by the France family? If they are, I think it would explain why there aren’t more short track races. Maybe I’m wrong.

(8) Go Figure says:

are the big tracks owned by the frances family? I don’t really know. When they wanted to build a track here in Washington state. The frances or nascar wanted the locals/state put up about 80% plus of the money to build it, Nascar would have control of it, Big chunk of the profits from it. When the state said no they was putting up way to much money while nascar putting a small fraction, then nascar pulled out and claimed they could buy the land from the people, that owners wouldn’t sell. Where as 98% of them was waiting at the door to sell. Go figure.

(9) jeff g fan says:

they should go more short tracks and add more seats, give more people a chance to go without traveling across so many miles to get there

(10) TLabonte Fan says:

#3 Lou,

Not beer drinkers who are at fault. Horrible Jr. fans that also happen to drink beer. Leave us beer drinkers out of it!

May 2, 2007 at 2:44 pm
(11) GordonFan says:

When are they going to stop letting fans bring their beer to the track in coolers? That and selling beer in paper cups could really hurt the idiots that like to throw things. Would cut into profits a little, but that is better than having someone hurt.

May 2, 2007 at 3:50 pm
(12) TLabonte Fan says:

Perfect idea. Punish all of us who can have a cold one an remain sane because of drunken idiots that cant act like grown ups. I have been going to races for 20 years. Take away my cooler and I’ll never go back to one!

May 2, 2007 at 6:29 pm
(13) Lou Lavison says:

#10 TLabonte Fan……..,

I’ll drink to that!

May 2, 2007 at 8:06 pm
(14) BOO HOO says:

I agree They should stop letting people bring coolers in. Lot of other sports have done that anyway. Just because a few. So what- if you have to have a cool one and can’t live without it buy it there. So what if you stop going nobody cares.

May 2, 2007 at 8:23 pm
(15) what? says:

# 10 comment, Lets get this straight you said If beer drinkers are not at fault but jr fans beer drinkers are at fault, uhm, they drink beer, so that means the beer drinkers are at fault, Right? One too many today?

(16) MURPHY says:

Note to #3. I don’t care who says what it’s a combination of the driver, car and crew (and in any order you want) that makes a winner. To try to reduce everything to the lowest common denominator, which is what nascar is trying to do is simply going to ruin racing. The race should go to the best of the best whoever it may be without any juggling of the rules. PEACE

(17) Paul says:

You want to see some good short track racing. Try visiting a local track you will see alot better racing and wont have any beer cans thrown at you!

(18) Big Nick says:

Short track racing is awesome, why do you think it is so hard to get tickets to Bristol. I went to Martinsville a few years ago and loved it. It is an old track but the excitement was great. I hope Nascar realizes they are taking all the tradition out of Nascar by trying to hit up all these huge markets. I mean we don’t even have the Southern 500 anymore, one of the most historic races ever. I would love to see the older tracks like Rockingham get another date, that is when racing was racing. Much of the talk now is how Nascar is fixing races and that is ruining Nascar, in my opinion money and greed is ruining Nascar. There is no history left in the sport and in a few years Martinsville will probably be off the schedule to go race in some big market where the races suck. Bring back the older tracks where racing was racing.

(19) jj 48 says:

Big Nick is right, they need to bring back rockingham, they just took away the short track.

May 3, 2007 at 9:08 am
(20) jason says:

For once I agree with Big Nick, the historic tracks need to be on the schedule, it reminds us where the sport came from.

(21) 1969rs says:

#3 Lou – they already tried that, it was called IROC.
But then again, aren’t all the cars today IROC cars? Oh, I’m sorry COT.

May 3, 2007 at 9:40 pm
(22) JBFan31 says:

Short tracks rule. They are more exciting. I go to Martinsville twice a year and it’s great. As for all the beer drinkers, please leave them alone. A NASCAR race wouldn’t be the same without enjoying a cold one while you’re there. Not everyone throwing things were beer drinker or Jr fans. Richmond should be pretty exciting. Go Jeff Burton!!!!!
