Jeff Gordon Scores Historic Phoenix Win
Sunday April 22, 2007
Jeff Gordon took the win tonight in the 2007 Subway Fresh Fit 500. This was his first ever win at Phoenix International Raceway and his 76th career NEXTEL Cup victory. This win tied him with the great Dale Earnhardt Sr. for sixth on NASCAR's all-time win list.
I thought that Gordon's tribute to Earnhardt on his victory lap was very well done and a classy touch. Gordon may well move up higher on this list before he is done. Just nine more wins will move him past Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip into third on the all-time win list.

It was a great Race,Thought Tony had him,Jeff was very determined to get that win.Tony was not to happy that Jeff didn’t go down a lap when the caution came out.It was a little strange how Jeff ended up with the lead..I thought when the caution came out the field was frozen and the pit’s were closed….But Im Happy for Jeff,He may not be America’s favorite, but he can drive the wheels of a car…Kenseth could win a lot more race’s if he would race harder and quit being such a nice guy..I would like to see him race to the front instead of playing it safe all the time.
Gordon will still find something to whine about.
Your right Tommy “ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!” I thought that Gordon was a real class act honoring Dale Sr. like he done.
FYI Tommy … they ALL whine when things don’t go their way … get over it!
Some people are so jealous it is sad.
And most likely have never raced a day in there life. But yes let him laugh all the way to the bank for the ones who don’t like him….
I was never much of a Sr. fan but I never booed or wished him bad. I guess that is a level of maturity Tommy and others like him will never reach. Gordon was a class act in both his actions and his words.
Well la de da!!! I root for Jeff Burton and anybody who finishes ahead of Jeff Gordon.Live with it!!!!!!
I’m new to NASCAR and don’t know much about the sport. But from my brief exposure, I think these drivers are the most professional and well-mannered athletes on the planet. Jeff Gordon is a terrific role model; he thanks his sponsors, appreciates the hard work of his crew chief and pit crew, and even praises his competition. I thought his tribute to Dale Earnhardt was tasteful and inspiring. When I attended the Auto Club 500, I couldn’t understand why the fans were so rude and insulting during his introductory lap. The 24 isn’t my favorite driver, but he is undoubtedly a class act.
Tommy, I’m still waiting for Jeff to whine as you losers put it.
Not my favorite either, but you are right Ryan.T
Tony should have won the race!!!!!When Jeff came into the pit’s and the caution came out the field is frozen the pit’s are closed. Jeff should have been a lap down. When that happen last week to Kurt Busch he went a lap down. NASCAR will change the rules when the want to to favor the drivers they want too WIN!!!!! I HOPE TONY PROTEST!!!!!
I think Dale Sr. was right. IF the fans aren’t badmouthing you and throwing things on the track which sure shows little class, then you aren’t winning. Jeff has always tried to be a gentleman whether he is winning or losing. Look at how some of the others behave. Some of you talk about Jeff being a whiner. Reread your letters!
Most of the fans throwing things,I believe are Dale Jr. fans. I do think that Jr. is a class act but so many of his fans are just the opposite,as is evidenced by all the red color in the sections it is coming from.
I have never been a Jeff Gordon fan he’s a little effeminate for me. But you can not take 76wins and 4cups away from him the Guy knows how to drive and win. I thought his vicotry lap was a little distasteful( I percieved it as “I am as great as Sr. now”) but only until I heard him speak. He was elequinte as usual. And explained his actions well.I thought it was great that Jr. congratulated him in his fathers absence as I am sure Sr. would have had he been alive. It is great sportsmanship. And this is after all Just A Sport.
Phoenix observations
1. How come NASCAR didn’t see the debris on track that caught Jamie McMurray’s grill ?
2. How come the guys in the booth can’t do simple math – 29 Chevies, 19 Fords, of course Chevy has better chance of winning, simple math
3. The COT still looks like the trucks
4. Darrel–true true true – “they got timing devices, we got a tach’s” (regarding pit row speed infractions)
5. Did you notice the empty seats in the stands?
6. YEAH Tony – tired of too many cautions
7. How does Jeff stay on lead lap and other’s go a lap down ??????? BUT how quick our FOX announcers were to explain it and of course tell us NASCAR was right and we are wrong.
GORDON is the man, stewart appears to be the whiner. Whats good for the goose isnt for the gander in his eyes. JR is a class act more & MORE UNLIKE HIS BUD DRINKING FANS.
Jr is a very cool dude…His Fan’s are stupid drunks that are surely not smarter than 5th graders…I think all the drivers due a good Job handling the pressure of Success, failure, ridicule, harrassment….This is a very intense sport…expect intense interviews and emotions.
I have been a Jeff G fan since 1994, I was also a Dale Sr fan. Both of them are and were great race car drivers. If they weren’t, they won’t have won so much.
#15 motorcrossed Well thats Nascar for you. Your question about Jeffs down a lap then all of sudden he won. They had it plan already for Jeff so he can win to match or beat Dale Sr record wins. His speach was already planned for him. Remember when Richard Petty won his 200th race just so happen the President was there to see him do it. Yes, that was I was thinking why didn’t Nascar see the trash on the track. Nascar can see phantom trash most other times, why not this time.
Well I see it this way Jeff is a good driver (as is Jr, Tony, Dale Sr, Martin and all of them — well maybe not Kyle) anyway I can look back at many many races that was handed to Jeff also. I can also remember several races where he struggled all race, then after last pit stop he suddenly got a horsepower boost and nearly laps everyone. NASCAR ALLOWED THIS? Jeff himself is a very good person, IT IS THE WHOLE HENDRICK ORGANIZATION, that NASCAR will go bankrupt and eventually to HELL to try to protect. NASCAR is its own problem. QUIT filling up the stands. QUIT buying “OFFICIAL NASCAR PRODUCTS”! NASCAR is (and will always be) a victim of its own circumstances!!
It sure is amazing how all of these armchair nascar fans know all about the fans that wear red and root for Jr. if you had ever attened a nascar event you would know that the real fans are just there having fun and enjoying their favorite sport and not being a finger pointing idiot like you!!!!!!!
None of the others matter.Tona Stewart is the greatest and he will give them all a good race anyday. 20 Home Depot.
I don’t know about you all, but those cars of tomorrow really look nice under the lights !!
I have been a JG fan since the days of Saturday Night Thunder on ESPN. He is the most talented driver in the series today. period. There is no equal. Of the active drivers he is #1 Tony Stewart will not have 4 Championships or 76 winns when it is all over neither will Jr. Count on it. Junior will be an owner\driver soon. but he will be a champion owner first. He can drive but he doesnt have the goods to deliver the championship caliber performance like Gordon. Its really amazing to see the Junior fans cry about stupid calls, He has been the recipient of mor phantom cautions than anyone. Any time he is way behind you can count on NASCAR finding a hot dog wrapper on the grass in the parking lot and deeming it a danger to the safety of the race and throwing a caution. Quit whining about Gordon winning. Statistically he is the best driver today bar none. Period
Instead of complaining of what went on in the race let’s look at the real problem. Chevolet wins every week. The fans in majority don’t seem to mind. As a ford fan I remember in the mid 80’s when Bill Elliot was tering up the track. There was a swift rule change by Nascar. In the so called interest of safty because Bobby Allison in a GM car lost control. Then the modification of the lumina for dale sr. til he was able to dominate the field with a poorly built car by the factory. Then the mysterious deaths of champion Ford drivers. The thick gasket issue on Mark Martins car that cost him the championship to the intiminator. When will there be justice for all money in this country dominates.
Hey I am a little late getting on here to say what I thought of the race. I loved it. The COT out did itself. I think that it proved itself well. Jeff Gordon and Tony raced each other hard and like gentleman. I said it before. Alot of people said that the only reason Jeff didnt spin Jimmie out a couple of weeks ago is because they are freinds that Jeff would have spun any other driver to take the lead. I think taht his actions Sat. night proved you wrong. Jeff Gordon showed alot of class. I agree I would use my own words instead of everyone elses but that says it all. Motocrossed Is there ever week that goes by that you wont complain and whine and carry on like a jerk. I dont think I have ever seen anything positive on your comments. Stop watching nascar if you hate it so much. Drivers dont need bad fans anyway. Sorry it is kinda rude but i think its true.
good for jeff cause iam a big fan.and my son is to he was jumping up and down cause jeff did win..i seen the race in texas.and jeff did good there to you just dont win everytime.but still happy for jeff..GOOD JOB
The people that “Boo” the drivers are OK, it’s the ones that throw junk on the track and at the drivers that should be escorted….. (Thrown out).
That mentality is from the same type of person who walks their dog and both use the same tree!
to Anita – Calling someone a “jerk” because they are critical does not seem bolster any of your commentary. I am critical because it is my right to be critical. I am not here to be a cheerleader for NASCAR, if you want to do that ask them if you can write for their page. If the product is not at a level for what I am paying for, then I deserve to voice my criticism (yes I go to at least 6 races a year). How did the COT prove itself?, I am curious as to how you came to this conclusion. Regarding drivers not bump and spinning: Any driver who “bumps” and spins someone to get by is not a gentleman. Jeff didn’t avoid spinning Jimmy not because they are friends he did it because if you can’t race around someone maybe you shouldn’t be racing to begin with. Mark Martin, Jeff Burton and a few others don’t spin other drivers because they don’t need to . I have seen Jimmy, Jeff Jr. and even my favorite Matt K. spin another car. It is disappointing when they do it. Simply not racing
Cot cars proved themselves by going around the track. Didn’t we see a tumble weed go around the track? Who invented the bumping in a race anyway, maybe the Romans? I seen them do it in movies in their races. Oh that is not racing, bumping. Now we have to tell the Local tracks thats not racing now. Everybody is a authority because they watch it.
Joe Stinker – bumping is fine, I am alluding to bumping and spinning . Heck, you need to bump on the super speedways (Daytona, Talladega).
motorcrossed true
So much hostility and so little time!!!
Bubba, I know I found that out after reading your comments. Everyone is a authority on here. Some don’t care for nascar and some kiss up to everything nascar does.
Personally, I am so glad that “Golden Boy” Gordon finally tied the great Dale Earnhardt’s win record. Now, hopefully, NASCAR will stop sending the fastest car to the end of the line (like they did to Kurt in Texas), lying about the race off pit road (like they did in Texas and Phoenix), and making split second one time rule changes like they did in Phoenix. Don’t get me wrong, Gordon is a great driver and he would have made it eventually, but I think this milestone in his career is tarnished by the obvious help he got from NASCAR.
I made this observation early on in the season and I will voice it again one more time and allow all of you on this thread to make up you’re own minds. Nascar in recent years is becoming another WWF scripted just like professional Wrestling, with Jeff Gordon being the Hulk Hogan and Jimmie Johnson being the Rick Flair, THINK ABOUT IT !!!
I had a comment posted last night about what motocrossed said about me saying he sounds like a jerk. I was on roll and cant remember all that I said. I will just say tonight that Motocrossed jsut say something positive once in a while. You never say anything nice. You say that you go to at least 6 races a year, why do you make yourself miserable watching it if you dont like it. As far as the COT proving itself. I think it perfomed very well. I dont know why my last comment dissapeared after it was posted but this is probelly a nicer commentary anyway.
Your last comment disappeared because it wasn’t nice. Name calling is not allowed.
I can’t believe the whiners, whining over Tony Stewarts beef. Gordon was past the start/finish line when the caution came out so he was up there. Still on the lead lap by the time the pace car came. Albeit, the end of the lap. But since he was in the pits before it closed why drive out? Finish what he started, stay on your lap. If the others didn’t pit then he would have been at the end of the lead lap line.
Also kudo’s for JR. He knew what the victory flag carrying lap was about.
Gosh, it sounds like to me that some of you people are doing all the whining. This is NASCAR, you either like or you don’t. I am tired of Hendricks’ cars always winning, but I will not stop watching the races because of it. Someone wrote earlier that all Jr. fans are drunks, with only a 5th grade education. I am not a drunk and I have a masters degree, so there. LOL
way to go Scott, I agree 100% Gordon drove the wheels off to get that VICTORY!!!!! I am proud of the way he showed a lot of class getting that win…. GO JEFF GO!!!! May Talladega be a win too!!!!!!
See told ya The kid prevails again. Another stunning victory for the greatest driver in the modern era. Including the man in black. More wins in less years and less starts. 7 or 8 cups is still not out of reach.
I do believe that Tony Stewart always has some kind of excuse for his wrecks or bad performance on the track. It is never his fault and he really needs some cheese to go with his ‘wine’.
