Old Cars Return For Fast Texas Race
Thursday April 12, 2007
After two weeks of short track racing with the Car of Tomorrow things couldn't be more different this weekend in Texas for the 2007 SAMSUNG 500. Texas Motor Speedway is the fastest race track on the schedule and the series returns to the old-style race car instead of the COT.
Texas has a well-deserved reputation for being unpredictable. Twelve different winners have won Texas' twelve different races in twelve different ways. Who will come out on top this Sunday in Texas?

It is time to stay with one car and stop this back and fourth. The COT is not a real car but I guess it is needed for safety but it needs to look much better. Where can I buy a car fepersented in NASCAR with a wing like that.
jim look around you on the streets those wings are on most of those rice burners that kids have.
I guess the old timers say that the COT handles like the cars back when the cars were actual production type cars on the short tracks. Has anybody heard what the testing was like when they were used on the superspeedways drafting?
Mike, I think that is why they are going back to their real cars, I’m guessing the soap boxes didn’t do to well at real speeds and NASCAR didn’t want an even bigger joke than they have presented the last two weeks. We can only hope they realized that their soap boxes are not a good idea, but I doubt it.
It be amazing if you people would read what nascar have said – they only going to race a LIMITED # of races with cot crap this year.
Yes, limited to 16 races – had to look it up just now – so these COTs will be at the superspeedways pretty soon. That could be real interesting.
I don’t think M.W. is a bad guy. toyota most likely offered him a huge amount of $$$$ to join their ranks. I do agree that toyotas are assembled in the United States of America, but that does not make them a United States brand name. I buy American made when ever I can. I have a Pontiac Gran Prix, a Chevy Tahoe, a Ford RV and a Harley Davidson. It makes a difference. The United States is under attack right here at home. We will lose this WAR without a shot being fired. Foreign Companies are buying America right out from under us. Toyota is using Nascar to justify their product as American Made. We fans should be screaming MAD!
We need a better car from a safety standpoint. If the COT is the answer, OK. However, NASCAR will spend a huge amount of time and effort to make it better and SAFER as time goes on this year. That will make a difference next year. We have a very large number of people who do nothing but complain. It is time for them to take a dose of whatever and relax. The world moves on every day and NASCAR is doing the right thing in trying to make the
cars better in every way that they can.
dave b. The reason that people are complaining about the cot is, the car looks like crap, they all look alike the same car, and not the car it suppose to be “IE” chevy, ford, dodge. it looks like a oblong brick box. Don’t you think they can make a car that actually look like a Impala, ford fushion, dodge whatever, and have the safety they are looking for? Yes raise the roof just a hair for safety too.
I agree with Randu. Yes the Toyota are made in the USA and so are the race cars. The money from thier prifits sure in hell doesn’t stay in the USA. They probably have ways to get the tax money out also
Neil, they have that too. If you check in to it the state’s gave Toyota, honda, the rest, a Tax break if they come in set up shop in their state.
It’s still racing in whatever car they are driving this week,so shut up and lets go racing.
Neil & John,
You may want to do your research before you start slamming Toyota. Texas and the local municipalities in San Antonio offered Toyota tons of Tax abatements to put the new plant there. Toyota put the plant there and graciously said no thanks to the tax breaks. How many American companies would do that?
I have never, and probably will never, own a foreign vehicle. I am partial to my F-350 4×4 deisel. However, until the American companies wake up and start acting like a for profit industry and not some socioexperimental life long health benfit agent, I’m afraid your going to see much of the same.
Racing…..Texas is a great track! Go Bobby!
TLabonte Fan maybe not in san Antonio, but you need do some research, I have been around areas that have foreign co.’s and yes American co’s with their tax breaks the states have gave them!! Socioexperimental life long health benefit agent? What does that mean by you saying that? You are correct when you said America would see more of the same, but not what you are referring too.
So far the Texas race is not a sell out, I got on and i could have bought ANY number of tickets I wanted. Guess that’s keeping in pace with most of the races.
Everybody is moaning about Toyota taking ther profits back to Japan and I understand that but all of the money that American laborers are making working at the Toyota plants here in the USA is spent right here in the good old USA.That’s why the American workers in those plants love Toyota, if brings food to there tables, let’s get real.

bubba missed the point uh?
I thought that this was supposed to be about the old cars racing this week end. I didnt think it was about the toyota’s. Toyota is in nascar and they are going to stay there. Move on. Here I see comments about the toyota’s and complaints about using the old cars instead of the COT. there is some that are supportive of the COT. I dont but I do know that I need a race and I cant wait till sunday. Oh yeah Hi John I’ve been gone have you been keeping the conversation stimulating? See ya
Ok Mrs. Cleaver….I mean Anita
Maybe Bubba missed the point but all of this crap about Ford,Chevy,Dodge, and Toyota is like this If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best.So open up another cold one and get ready for qualifing.
Thank you motorcrossed. I have been called worse. I just think that it is ridiculous that people complain about the cot and then complain when they use the old ones. I thought there would be alot of “its about time nascar used the real cars again” but instead they are complaining about the old cars. Cant make up their minds.
Steve now read what has been written. Why is the American auto co’ making autos elsewhere? Because Americans buy autos from other countries. Therefore, in order to compete and survive they make autos over there now. So the jobs are gone because of it. Why? Americans buy foreign now people like you complain because the jobs are gone. Like the jobs from other manufactures. Understand? Toyota is a Japan owned co. The car that are made here by Americans is still a Japan auto co.. So this crap that Toyota is a American car because it is made here is crap, it’s a Japan owned co. Fords Chevy, made Mexico, and Canada yes but it is an American co. I guess that is what happens when people want to buy cheaper price toasters, TV’s, autos, or anything else. Businesses do what they have to do to survive, including lay American workers off send jobs overseas. Just can’t have both ways.
It’s hard to believe their still so many red necks out there still calling Toyota’s rice burners. Honda and Toyota are more American made the the big three. No I don’t drive one I drive a Ford.
What we have here some wanna be calling others red necks. They still don’t have a clue just because a car is built in the USA it is still a Japan, German, korean car. This is the only place you see people Look at a toyota and say duh it is American. When I been overseas and you see a gm, ford make you ask, they that’s a american car. oh well some will never understand, maybe they will their jobs get sent overseas.
People need to realize that spending money on foreign products is a necessity. And people who say they dont buy foreign products must not own a t.v., vcr, dvd player, microwave, alarm clock……oh wait, how’d they email this forum!!
Mike, no one said not to buy foreign products. As you brought up in your comment example, “you must not watch TV, DVD, vcr etc.” As I said before now why is it all TV’s made overseas? Where as they use to be made in the usa? Because the foreign co. started to sell us, the TV’s, alarm clocks, autos, etc that is made over there at a cheaper price. Now because people have bought them, they the American co’s in order to survive in the market place sent their manufacture/jobs overseas. Now NO TV’s are made here as along with the jobs. So, yes mike it is necessary to buy foreign products, because Americans want American jobs but they did not want to buy American products. Now the price is most everything is made overseas and the jobs are going with it. Again, Mike, no one said not to buy foreign products. However, no one thought past their nose what happen if all bought all the stuff overseas. Oh yes, I do realize we must buy foreign products, however most do not realize why we have too.
Sorry about Michael. I’m also sorry the weather took out the qualifing. I think that Nascar acould have dumpped one of the practice sessions and had the 15 or so teams that needed to qualify a chance to do so. That would have given those teams a shot for making the trip to Texas. What’s everybody think about that?
NASCAR on Fox sucks! I would like to see the actual cars racing, and not some stupid video game crap. And the Hollywood Hotel… damn it, show the race!
Commercials… damn it, show the race!
Commentary on some driver’s wife… damn it, show the race!
Just show the damn race!!!
Nascar8fan How else are they going to make it exciting?
Hello Nascar8fan…. you have to have commercals to pay for the sponsers. Some people like to know about the racers they are watching. Some people like to try to learn about what they are watching…
Reading this column is more fun than readin’ the comics……….!!
I live in the Corpus Christi, Tx area. We have a weak suck FOX station that doesn’t have enough horse-power to get a signal the 24 miles to my home. So, I don’t get NASCAR, the Dallas Cowboys, etc. Seems like the advertisers could do better.
