Jimmie Johnson Wins Atlanta Snoozer

Sunday March 18, 2007
Are you familiar with the term "NASCAR Nap?" The 2007 Kobalt Tools 500 was not very interesting for the vast majority of the race. Fans could have dozed off for a couple hundred laps in the middle of the race and not missed a thing. Thankfully the finish provided a little drama as Jimmie Johnson squeezed past Tony Stewart with just three laps to go to claim the win.

The Car of Tomorrow is supposed to improve the racing. Lets hope that proves to be true since this was the second painfully boring race out of the four we have had so far in 2007.

(1) Kent says:

Whoa! No comments yet?!! I guess it was a “SNOOZER”! Well…I’ll I have to say is BRISTOL BABY!!!! WAKE US UP!!

March 18, 2007 at 6:51 pm
(2) Quint says:

Tony should have won that one.
If you’re just looking for crashes – you’re not atrue fan.

March 18, 2007 at 7:11 pm
(3) Chris says:

I believe if they would have had the bigger fuel cells it would have been more exciting. We would have seen the tire issue which was narrowly avoided by several drivers.

March 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm
(4) Sparky says:

I believe NASCAR should leave the WWF style of racing alone and STOP the debris cautions to “enhance” the outcome of the race. Let the drivers and crews worry about that stuff.

March 18, 2007 at 7:28 pm
(5) MARY says:

I AM SO SICK OF JIMMY JOHNSON HE IS AS BAD AS THAT STUPID COMMERICAL WHERE HE HAS TO SHOW OFF HIS CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

March 18, 2007 at 7:42 pm
(6) angie says:

Why do you hate Jimmie Johnson, because he can RACE?! I happen to think his trophy commercial is hilarious.

March 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm
(7) Bubba says:

True Champions don’t have to show there trophies, because true fans already know who they are!!!!!

March 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
(8) Murphy says:

Right on Sparky, whenever a race is to spread out near the end they fake a caution to tighten up the cars. I’m not a fan of either Johnson or Stewart but I think that caution may have changed the outcome.

March 18, 2007 at 9:24 pm
(9) Chuck says:

That was Tony’s race and if jerk Johnson wouldn’t have pinched him against the wall Tony would have come back around and won

March 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm
(10) Jake says:

Great job Jimmie! Dominant the entire race.

March 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm
(11) john says:

Hey Mary, Bubba Those are commercials, do you really think he’s does that for real? Jerk johnson? I know he pinch stewart against the wall so you could complain about it Chuck. Oh yea a True nascar fan don’t like crashes right, Quint? Sunday comics, these are funny.

March 18, 2007 at 9:52 pm
(12) john says:

P.S. I forgot to say these comments are more exciting than the race.

March 18, 2007 at 10:28 pm
(13) Eric says:

I think you have probably talked about this before, but isn’t the COT supposed answer “safety concerns” therfore make racing safer. Like the Restrictor Plate. So all the cars willl be more evenly matched. Won’t that in actuality cause The Big One at every race track? or am I just being skeptical? by the way there was a race today?

March 18, 2007 at 11:57 pm
(14) jOE says:

There are a lot of Jimmie haters out there but the guy has to have some great skills and a great team to stay that consistent thru all these years so far.It seems some people just don’t get the credit they deserve. And others like Dale Junior get lots of props because of his dad and to me doesn’t even drive anything near like his dad. he is way to passive. his dad was hard to the gring.

March 19, 2007 at 12:59 am
(15) Ben says:

Suck it up Tony. Go blow your nose. The Man accusing others of always whining has been crying like a baby about everything. It’s over, he lost. Be a man & move on. Talk about sore losers. 48 haters are scratching so deep to find a way to take the win from JJ, pretty soon you will be saying that’s not him driving the car! Go JJ!

March 19, 2007 at 4:53 am
(16) Anita says:

Well this is only the second week I have looked at this, and I must say that this week is about like last. Dont complain so much. I think Bristol will be alot of fun. Ussually is. Tony would have done the exact same thing to Jimmie given the chance. ITS CALLED RACING TO WIN… And Mary if Jimmie is so sucky why is he the camp? Why has he won the last 2 races. The feild is full of good drivers, your favorite cant win every week. That would not be a sport. So suck it up support your favorite and stop making excuses when your guy dont win.

March 19, 2007 at 6:22 am
(17) Bruce Tyler says:

It was a good race,Im a stewart fan but he was going to lose no matter what,he would have done the same thing to Jimmy,it was just racing and Tony took it like a man.He could have turn Jimmy but he didn’t.Jimmy is a good driver and did what he had to do to win, thats what it’s all about….Let’s go to Bristol!

March 19, 2007 at 9:14 am
(18) debora says:

im glad johnson won +he showed the better man won .

March 19, 2007 at 10:38 am
(19) TLabonte Fan says:

David,

I was never a fan of Earhardt Sr. when he was racing, but one could never doubt his talents or abilities. You sir, are a total jacka** to the inth degree.

Steve, that was a SNOOZER. The debris caution at the end cost Tony that race. I’m not a fan of either J.J. or Stewart, nor do I dislike either of them. Without the caution, J.J. does not have time to catch up. I hope NASCAR is not fabricating debris cautions to tighten up a fairly boring race.

March 19, 2007 at 10:47 am
(20) my take says:

NASCAR always done that thing, fabricating debris cautions. Think about it how many time has there been a caution for a paper cup?

March 19, 2007 at 10:56 am
(21) TLabonte Fan says:

My comment to David has been erased, and rightfully so. He made a very distasteful reference to D. E. Sr.’s untimely passing.

March 19, 2007 at 11:56 am
(22) a JJ Fan says:

I think everyone should stop whining about Jimmie winning…he dominated that entire race and did not even have contact with Tony! Tony was awesome in the fact that had he wanted to be a jerk he could have spun Jimmie, but didn’t, knowing that Jimmie passed him clean.
As for the comment about the commercials, do you REALLY think that Jimmie is the one who wrote the commercial? Grow up!!

March 19, 2007 at 12:02 pm
(23) patti says:

just sick any tired to see jimmy johnson winner he thinks he is the best thing on the track but he is not the only driver

March 19, 2007 at 12:12 pm
(24) dennis says:

well lets see now jimmy is not the only driver and yes i have seen better racers out there and jr needs to get his pionts up and gordon is doing good for himself.but enough of jimmy now ok

March 19, 2007 at 12:27 pm
(25) Pinkigirl says:

Hey guys,
This is my first post. I am a true Earnhardt fan ,always have been and always will be. I grew up watching the race with my dad and my brothers and it was always go big 3. When J.R. started racing in the bush race, I was ready to cheer him on as well.
That said, unfortunatley, it wasn’t JR racing for the win, I honsstly think his biggest problem is his crew. There seems to be a lot of mistakes made on that team. Not only the crew but with Dale as well. And you may as well kiss DEI good bye if Teresa is successful at kicking JR out.
As for the end of the race Sunday. Jimmie had the better car. I am not a big fan of the 48 or the 20 but even Tony admitted that Jimmie had the better car and he wasn’t able to hold him back. They are both great drivers though. Tony did a real good job at saving his car after it scraped the wall when Jimmie passed him.
I too would like to see someone else in victory lane. Hopefully Bristol will wake us all up!!!!!!!!

March 19, 2007 at 2:03 pm
(26) J.D. says:

It seems real convenient that the Hendrick cars are running in or near the top 5 EVERY RACE !! There is something that smells rotten here!! (Check it out closer please NASCAR)

March 19, 2007 at 3:21 pm
(27) john says:

OH NO!!!! it’s conspiracy time again. Was it last year or year before we heard the same thing about the rousch stable? Isn’t funny when one group have a good week or two the conspiracies come out? ha

March 19, 2007 at 3:37 pm
(28) Bubba says:

New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Hendricks Motorsports, everybody hates a winner!!!!!!! Get a life.

March 19, 2007 at 6:31 pm
(29) Anita says:

Yo DJ you dont know what you are talking about. Just because the whole team is running good the last few weeks they must be cheating… GET REAL..

March 19, 2007 at 6:34 pm
(30) Anita says:

I see that my last post I made a typo. I ment champ not camp.. Now I look like the idiot. HA HA… I guess I can laugh at myself too.

March 19, 2007 at 7:37 pm
(31) Shannon says:

It’s a conspiracy. The 48 is lurking, waiting to pounce on his next intended victim. Chad & Jimmie are sending notes to each other & crew with scheming ways to rob all drivers out of the next race. They are a dark force..beware. This is just too funny! Go Jimmie

March 19, 2007 at 8:05 pm
(32) TLabonte Fan says:

a JJ Fan,

No whining from me. Just pointing out the obvious. Once Bobby started having problems I didnt have a dog in the hunt. It was just race watching and evaluating from that point. Agreed, JJ was dominating, but without that last caution he would have finished second. Congrats to Jimmie, I am here to take nothing away from him. I cant stand the JJ bashers, or the Gordon bashers for that matter. Any and all of them who think that either of those 2 get preffered status, as far as calls on the track are concerned, should look no further than the preferential treatment that I am positive the 8 car receives.

March 19, 2007 at 11:17 pm
(33) Dotty says:

Awh just stop it, all you haters.
It was a great finish. Tony is a MAN!!! Jimmie IS A WINNER!!!
and he’ll prove it again time after time….GO JIMMIE

March 20, 2007 at 7:49 am
(34) Ashlee says:

You all know that Kasey Kahne and Dale Jr. are the hottest drivers in nascar!!!

March 20, 2007 at 10:00 am
(35) Paula says:

TONY STEWART FANS ARE TRUE TO TONY THAT’S FOR SURE THEY ARE ALL A BUNCH OF CRY BABIES JUST LIKE HE IS…CONGRATULATIONS JIMMIE FOR THE 2nd CONSECUTIVE WIN THIS MONTH…LOVE YA

March 20, 2007 at 11:09 am
(36) Last Chance says:

Why aren’t any of you people concerned about the fake caution near the end of the race just to tighten things up? If NASCAR keeps doing this it will really be the end of good racing.

March 20, 2007 at 11:13 am
(37) Anita says:

Hey now I love Jimmie and all but there is no reason to bash Tony or his fans. He is also a great driver. He took his 2nd like a man. I do agree that number 8 gets alot of undeserved attention. I think that he is a average driver with alot of $$$ behind him and his Dads fan to back him. I have nothing against him I just dont think he is all that great.

March 20, 2007 at 11:16 am
(38) Sher says:

I guess the Jimmie Johnson haters and Tony Stewert supporters that want to whine about what Jimmie did in the race seem to REFUSE to remember a few years ago, I THINK it was the season when Earnhart Sr died, when Tony got ticked with Gordon and slammed into Gordon, PURPOSELY, while he was coming into the pits. Yes, Stewert got fined, heavily, but Stewert DOES fight a little dirty. What was it that Stewert said, that he only drove “old school racing” when someone questioned his racing “morals”? But now that Johnson raced “old school”, the hard core Stewert supporters want to gripe about it. Well, fair is fair. Get over yourselves and move on…more races, more fun, less griping. Just give it up and live. You don’t see the drivers crying on and on and on. Most likely they’re reading some of this stuff and are actually laughing their butts off at us, knowing how WE are more whiners about who screwed who out of the race, when they are over it and are moving on with their lives.

March 20, 2007 at 12:47 pm
(39) john says:

All of you Jimmie, Tony, etc fans are bunch of whiners. Tony did that, Jimmie done that. Nothing new here. Jr gets attention so what!!! Jimmie gets a lot of attention, we seen him getting out of a helicopter, so does Tony, and a few others get a lot of attention. Who cares? Oh yea those caution flags, if you have been watching NASCAR for the past maybe 10 years maybe longer, that is not new either. Waltrip said on TV last night he supports those kinds of cautions. Even the people that they say they cannot stand bashing, then turn around and bash.

March 20, 2007 at 12:57 pm
(40) jim says:

great job by the nascar official getting johnsons loose tire. kept him up front where they wanted him, and no loose tire penalty!!! why dont you just give the damn championship to him now and save the other less popular teams a chance to save thier equipment.Ive watched nascar all my adult life and have never seen such a display of crap as nascar has been doing lately. I think myself and my friends will switch to golf on sunday’s instead of watching a game and mockery of the worlds greatest sport. nascar has singlehandedly ruined racing, not only for me but a lot of other fans as well. GOOD LUCK NASCAR,HOPE YOUR HAPPY WITH THE DECLINE OF SPECTATOR PARTICIPATION.

March 20, 2007 at 2:35 pm
(41) Anita says:

Hello again Hey there John and Jim who was bashing I hope you were not talking about me. I said I have nothing against JR. I just dont understand the all the hype around him. JJ and the others are top contenders right now and he is not so much. Of course the camera’s are going to be on the top drivers and it changes from year to year. I also think that maybe the sport of racing would be better off if people like jim would change the chanel and watch golf. If you cant take the heat and the changes that come with time get out of the kitchen. I personally sometimes dont agree with some of the calls for penilties, sometimes I dont like the rule changes but I am also a fan not a driver,or team owner,or officail,or NASCAR board member, stock holder ect,… So I try to enjoy the action I have no control over the rest of it. GO Jimmie Go

March 20, 2007 at 3:05 pm
(42) john says:

Hey Anita, I wasn’t talking about you. The hype about JR? a lot of people like him. Lot of people wonder the same about the hype of Jimmie, Tony, and the rest. If someone don’t like a driver, and that driver get some media attention, they complain. As I said before, if you been around nascar for any length of time, the people only hear about 2,3,4 maybe 5 drivers out of 43. Back in the 80’s Bill elliot was popular, and everything was about him. The 60’s 70’s, the 90’s had their hype drivers, now it’s 00’s. Being a contender to be liked? a driver don’t have to be in the running to be liked. You are correct to the point we don’t have control of it. Nascar going to do what Nascar wants.

March 20, 2007 at 4:44 pm
(43) Anita says:

Thank you for your clairifcation John. I appreiciate it. I think that for the mosst part we agree. Have a good day

March 20, 2007 at 7:26 pm
(44) TRUE says:

I completely agree with whoever wrote that Tony Stewart has atleast for the last 2 weeks been a complete whiny cry baby and I usually enjoy Tony but first it was the tires now he got pushed to the wall get over it, Jimmie won again credit to him, but I hope someone else wins this week COT should hopefully make it interesting. DALE JR. RULES so don’t hate him because he’s beautiful cause he is. And I agree with pinkgirl that his main problem seems to be his crew.

March 20, 2007 at 11:23 pm
(45) joet says:

No one mentions the fact that JJ is among the smartest drivers’ out there. He runs hard enough to stay close the entire race, conserving his engine while others go balls out from the beginning and wind up either crashing or blowing his engine. JJ always has something for the end.

March 20, 2007 at 11:28 pm
(46) Darin says:

I am glad I have all this diecast in the cabinet behind me. At least I will have something to remind me of how good racing used to be.

NASCAR has gotten boring and the lame cautions for things like pavement or painted lines being on the track make it worse.

Who cares who won as long as it’s a home improvement sponsor.

Bristol will be exciting only because Nascar won’t have to fake a debris caution. There will be 43 pieces of debris racing each other. It’s called the COT.

Dale is gone, Mark is leaving, DW isnt racing, Rusty is retired, and the new guys all look like Jeff Gordon wanna be cookie cutter race driver cardboard cut outs. Only fresh breath of air is Juan.

Good Luck Nascar….you are gonna need it.

If you wanna know when I will take my Sunday nap just look to see when the race is on.

See ya’

March 21, 2007 at 9:16 am
(47) P.H#2 says:

Quit complaning it`s only racing, just sit back and enjoy.

March 21, 2007 at 11:37 am
(48) Bob's the expert here. says:

Hey Jim, you think NASCAR fan support is wanning? Really? And what exactly are you basing your thesis on? The fact that NASCAR is the fastest growing sport on teh face of the planet? While NASCAR is far beyond perfect, i.e., invisible debris on the track, I’ve seen a few tires manipulated by the official. There are no special favors for any driver, if there were NASCAR would find a way to have Dale Jr. win a race.
Bob said it – Its done

March 21, 2007 at 1:40 pm
(49) john says:

These comments are still funny. You have a M***N saying how intelligent he is by pointing out a wrong word a person used, of which he don’t use the correct word’s in his statement either, then turn around and making a fool of himself by ASSUMING a person is a redneck. Then tells that person he should comment suicide! Then you have another person keep saying NASCAR is the fastest growing sport in the world, (yes it is true) but he have not been pay much attention that NASCAR is loosing its popularity the last year or two. A winner by one definition a person that win races. Nether JR or Gordon has of yet won this year. Yes, Gordon is higher in points than the other is, he still not a winner this year yet. Another definition of a winner is to some is a person with class, well that leaves one of you out. Oh yea if you look I made mistakes too. I am sure you can make the point I am trying to make. Then again, who cares? Oh well these comments are funny.

March 21, 2007 at 2:21 pm
(50) Anita says:

Hey who ever Jimmie is smarter than bubba. I think you went overboard with the whole suicide comment. Chill out dude.

March 21, 2007 at 4:35 pm
(51) Last Chance says:

Item for Bob The Expert-I did notice quite a few empty seats at Atlanta the other day.

March 21, 2007 at 5:03 pm
(52) john says:

You noticed that too, last chance? A family member telling me that there has been alot of commercials down in texas trying to get people to buy nascar tickets. More commercials than the last few years. What does that say to you?

March 21, 2007 at 5:18 pm
(53) Anita says:

John it says to me that they are spending more $ on ad’s and pr. Oh no lets not expand our veiwer bass by putting comercails on TV to get people who might not have ever seen a race to buy a ticket. CRAP its the end of racing as we know it. (sarcazm in case someone cant tell)

March 21, 2007 at 7:15 pm
(54) john says:

Anita, Possible but after seeing alot of the tracks have less than full seats, it could be things not as good as once was. Who knows? we all talk out of out butts most of the time on here. That’s why these comments are funny. ha

March 27, 2007 at 3:20 pm
(55) Sher says:

Hey, maybe there aren’t many fans out there because of the gas prices…have you seen them lately…GEEZE!!!!! Gotta sell the house to take a week-end trip to the race…but it’s worth it!!!!JK!

March 29, 2007 at 7:53 am
(56) DAVID says:

I HATE JIMMIE JOHNSON, BECAUSE SINCE I DIDN’T HAVE SOMETHING WITH 48 ON IT HE WOULDN’T GIVE ME AN AUTOGRAGH. THE AUTOGRAPH WAS FOR A FRIEND THAT CAN’T MAKE IT TO RACES BECAUSES OF HIS JOB.
JIMMIE IS NOT A CHAMPION HE IS A LOW LIFE PUNK.

March 31, 2007 at 3:53 pm
(57) john says:

David can you type a little bigger? i’m sure johnson staying up at night because you don’t like him. I also didn’t think it was a rule to give a autograph. lot of so call famous people charges for theirs. mello out

November 5, 2007 at 12:11 am
(58) jr fan says:

a couple of weeks here and there i do not question…. 16 races out of 34 starts so far for hendricks….and knaus suspended twice for cheating….i have my doubts about hendricks being “THAT GOOD” nascar DOES need to look after those boys. also SO sick of the camera and the announcers following jimmie johnson everywhere on the track he happens to be…allbeit in 1st or 35th…the camera is never off of him! GIMME A BREAK! if we wanted to watch nothing but jimmie johnson…we would go to his website!!!! we tune in to watch ALL of them race!

October 6, 2008 at 12:12 pm
(59) Richard says:

Why do the Dale jr fans aways blame someone else, when he does not win? Look at the driver. I was a fan of JR until i read his book, Driver number 8. It seem like all he was saying ME! ME! ME! in the book. I see that it his way that people should pull over and let him win, and everything is for him. Nothing but a spoil kid! I now cheer for the 48 car.

November 6, 2009 at 10:36 pm
(60) kevin says:

I’m tired of jimmie johnson. i dont care if he wins year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year. Yeah, it gets to be not at all fun after awhile. Hey, everybody hated jeff gordon after he kept winning!! I am a true gordon fan and i’ve heard it all. i don’t listen anymore. I don’t like the points system. It’s leads to an unfair advantage. But what do i know? NASCAR is ,making too many rules. They are sucking the fun out of racing. It’s getting BORING anymore.
