Rookie Denny Hamlin Wins Budweiser Shootout

By February 12, 2006

Follow me on:

It was quite a show today as rookie Denny Hamlin's #11 FedEx crew got him off of pit road first and he was able to hold on for the win. Hamlin ran a handful of races in 2005 to become eligible for this race and is a candidate for the 2006 Raybestos Rookie of the Year. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second beating Tony Stewart to the line by just a couple of inches.

Unfortunately this doesn't bode well for next week's Daytona 500. This race was a typical modern-day restrictor plate race. It was dangerous in the pack and very difficult to pass the leader. The only way to pass is to get hit in the back by another driver which seriously upsets your car. This is terribly dangerous at any speed but especially at nearly 200 MPH.

Hopefully the drivers will all get through this week without any serious injuries.
