White Knuckle Weekend For Cup Chasers
Friday October 1, 2004
The Chase For The NEXTEL Cup moves on to Talladega this weekend. The huge 2.66 mile high-banked superspeedway features restrictor plates to keep the speeds down. These place a premium on aerodynamics and cause the cars to spend all day in a huge pack, just inches from disaster for 500 miles. This is the race that everybody just wants to survive.
Mostly you'll just see the contenders trying to stay safe this weekend. They'll be looking for people that they trust to draft with, hoping more for a solid and safe top 10 than a hard-charging win. The easiest way to avoid the massive wreck known as "The Big One" is to be in front of it. So look for the leaders to get in line at the front and sit there most of the day. The real Chase for the Cup will resume next week, this weekend it is all about survival.
