Green-White-Checkers Is Official

Friday July 16, 2004
Starting with next week's racing in New Hampshire NASCAR's Busch and NEXTEL Cup series will adopt the green-white-checkers finish. This change should basically eliminate yellow-flag finishes in NASCAR. While I can understand that the fans want to see the race end under the green this just isn't good for the drivers.

NASCAR has seen in the past what happens with short sprints to the checkered flag, and none of it is good. The new green-white-checkers finish rule will cause somebody to get hurt within the first 5 times that it is used.

NASCAR Online has some additional comments from drivers who just don't think that this is a good idea.

Does NASCAR no longer care about the drivers? This is yet another instance where NASCAR forged blindly ahead with a wildly unpopular rule change. It is amazing to me that NASCAR would ignore the guys who put on the show for them and put this rule in place.
